Jackson raised hie finger, and in his
cold voice there was an accent of

like a hand of ice

The officer who was present at this
scene, and related it to me, declares
that be never saw a deeper suppression
of concentrated anger than that whiofa
shone in Jackson's eye, or heard
humah voice more meuaciog.
There were other times when Jack
son, stung and aroused, was driven
from his propriety, or, at least, out of
his coolness The winter of eighteen
hundred and sixty one snd sixty-two
was such an occasion. lie had made
his expedition to Morgan county, and.
in tpite of grest suffering* among the
troops, had forced the Federal gam
sons at Bath and Itomney to retire,
and accomplished all his end*. Gen
eral Jackson Loring was then left at Romney,
and returned to Winchester.
All this is well known. Wbat follows
is not well known to many. General
Ix>ring conceived an intense enmity for
Jackson, and made such represent*
tions at Richmond, that an order was
sent to Loring, direct, not through
Jackson, commanding in the valley,
recajiing in his resignation. bim. Jackson The at once which sent

suade him that to recall bis
resignation. "No, sir,” exclaimed
Jack-on striding ^ fiercely up and
.dowti, “l will not hold a command
upon terms of that sort. I will not
have those people at Richmond inter
feting in my plaos, and sending orders
to an officer under me. No soldier
c*n endure it. I care not for myself,
If I know myself I do got set from
anger-—b t if f yield now they will
treat better men in the name way ' I
am nobody—bat the protest must be
made here, or Lee and Johnston will
be meddled with as I am.” It was
only alter the resignation had been

from the head of the War Office, that the

With she exception of these rare
occasions when his great passrvms were
aroused, Jackson was a common-place
sort of person, and his bearing neither
striking, graceful or impressive. He
rode ungracefully, walked with- an
awkward stride, and wanted ease of
manner. He never lost a oerlaia shy*

Une of tbemost Juriou* peculiarities
of Jackson was the strange fashion he

Icnnine the meaning of this singular
gesture. It is said that he had some
physical hi ment which he thus re

lie the case. Certain it it that he often
held hi* hand- sometime* both hand*

There are those who said that all this
indicated a partial specie* of insanity
—lhat Jackson’s tnind was not sound.
("her stories are told of him which

amounted to craziners. Upon this
point the philosophers and physio'o

can ouly **y that Jackson appeared to

Jackson as a leader wa » hi# unerring
judgment and accuracy of calculation,
The present writer is familiar with
every reoail detail of his career, and does not
one blunder. Kemstown was
fought upon information furnished by
General Ashby, a most accomplished
and reliable porUkan, which turned
out to be inaeoorate; but even in de
feat Jackson there accomplished the
very important Federal object of returning a

occasion for an analysis of these cam'

that they aro magoifieent illustrations
of the mathematic* of war , that tha
brain which conceived and executed
designs ao bold and splendid must
have possessed a sanity, tor all practi

Jackson’s religious opinions are un
