THE SMACK IN SCHOOL.
BY WILLIAM PITT PALMKR.
A district school not far away
Alid Berkshire hills, ono winter's day
Was humming with its wonted noise
Of throe soore mingled girls and boys;
Some few upon their task intent.
But more on luture mischief bent, look
The while the master's downward
Was fastened on behind a copy-book; his back,
When suddenly, clear rousing smack !
Rose sharp amt a
As ’twere a battery of bliss
Set otfin one tremendous kiss!
ii what’s that 1” the startled master cries;
“That, thir,” a little Willeth, imp replies, if please—
o vVath William you !”
I saw him kith Thutthanah Peaihe
With frown to make a statute thrill,
The master thundered, “Hither Will!”
Like wretch o’ertaken in his track.
With stolen chattels on his back,
Will hung his head In fear and shame,
And to the awful presence came—
A great, green, bashtul simpleton,
The butt ol all good natured lun—
With smile suppressed mitered—“I’m and birch amazed upraised,
The threnterier
That you, my biggest pupil, should
Bo guilty of an act so rude !
Before the whole set school to boot—
What ovil genius put you to ttl”
“ >Twas she herself, sir,” sobbed the lad,
“I didn’t mean to be so bad—
But when Susannah shook her curls,
And And whispered dursn’t. kiss I was baby’s ’fraid doll, of girls,
a
I couldn’t stand it, sir, at all,
But up and kissed her on the spot 1

But somehow from her looks—boo
I thought she kind o’ wished me to !”

A SPECIMEN.
From the Blaok River (Ark.) Standard.
Near the southern centre oi tbc
of Arkansas lived, a lew months
a young man and his still younger
ter, with a young and
wife whom ire had taken to his
and fireside. Everything seemed
and beautiful before them. The
man’s name was Mitchell- In
last— Mitchell being absent—as
was hia sister at a neighboring
a worthless scoundrel canto io
Louse, whose advances the young
had scornfully repulsed, and hired a
gro man to seed a negro boy to tell
Mitchell that a lady had called to
her, ana desired her to return
Alter closely questioning the boy,
young lady was convinced that lie
telling her a lie, and did not return.
Urn evening the brother returned,
Laving learned the facts as above
ted, and provoked at the impudence
ins negro who nad accepted the
to send a lie to bis young sister,

The Blood of Pocahontas.—Y
Dam, tho clover satirist of tlio Louis¬
ville Courier, i B afraid that tho blood
Pocahontas will never run out. In a
late letter he thus expresses himself on
the subject ;
As a matter ot public interest I hope
the next census taker will record the
number of tho descendants of Poca¬
hontas in a separate column. It should
be done in order that the Auglo Saxon
portion of our nation may know what a
debt of population, gratitude and first
families they owe to that eminent squaw.
A large number of tho beautiful
sprightly lineal descendants ladies ot' the South daughter claim
oi the
Powhatan. It is a curious fact
the progeny of that angelic savage
mostly females. Wo rarely meet a
who claims lr> have Indian blood
Ills veins. Aud why it is that
belles are so anxious to have it under¬
stood that they are a dilution of Indian,
we are at a loss to understand. There
is no trait in the Indian character, thus
far developed, that is not
and revolting. They are a hateful
repulsive lot, as blood-thirsty aud cruel
as loathsome the tigers of the jungle ; and ugly
as the crocodile of tho
and as untamable as a grizzly bear.
Because our girls paint, wear
and various kinds of wampum,
manifest a disposition to go naked,
they are not necessarily to be classified
as a mild type of Indian. Wo prefer to
attribute these eccentricities to a freak
of fashion, rather than to a stjeak of
Indian. We shall claim them for our
nation until they insist upon hoeing
corn, tanning skins and fetching the
mud aud other materials for the con¬
struction of our wigwams.- It will
then time enough to acknowledge
“Spotted Tail" for a cousin, and
“Bloody Snake’’ for our brother-in-law.
