“Joliu M- Haulers Latch Key.”
Under this heading, Dr. Q. W. Bag
by lias published in the last three num¬
bers of his paper, the Native Virginian,
a deeply interesting sketch of the life,
character and death of John M. Daniel,
formerly editor of the Kiclunond Exam¬
iner, and one of tho most remarkable
young men that this country ever pro
duced. We may at some luture day
publish the whole of this exceedingly
interesting essay, with some few emen¬
dations of our own, drawn from our
associations and conversations with him
i >u the staff of Gen. Floyd in the late
war; but for the present we can find
space only for the sketch oi the closing
scene of his life, which is related as fol¬
lows by Dr. Bagby:
DEATH SCENE OF DA Mr-1
A few words about MS death and T
have done. L»«e ni January, 1905, he
was attached, the second tune, with
. me „m,.nia. Treated promptly by skill
. *‘,ii physicians, his disease abated, he
i allied, and was able to sit up and at¬
tend somewhat to his dudes. His re¬
covery was deemed certain. But, as the
events proved, tubercles were developed
both in the lungs and in the mesenteric
glands. The patient gradually grew
worse, and was at .length compelled to
return to bis bed. The slow weeks of
winter wore themselves away. How
they passed I cannot tell, for, although
I made frequent calls at tho house on
Broad street, l was always refused ad¬
mittance. The latch key remained un¬
used iu my pocket. Only bis physi¬
cians and most intimate friends were
admitted to the sick man’s chamber.—
On one occasion, as 1 was told by a
Kentucky member of the Confederate
Congiess, he sent for the llou. If. M. T.
Hunter, aud one or two other promi¬
nent politicians, and told (hem his can¬
did opinion—that the Cause was hope¬
less, and that the only course left for us
was, “reconstruction on the best terms
\vu could make.”
So long as his strength pci milled him
to lake an interest in any earthly thing,
lie had the welfare of the Southern peo¬
ple fit heart, aud his latest effort seems
u> have been to sucute by negotiation
w hat he was persuaded arms could not
achieve. Those who outlived him can
decide for themselves whether the con¬
queror would have kept the faith which
might have been plighted at Fortress
Monroe better than that which was so
solemnly pledged ul Appomattax Court
House.
As spring approached his symptoms
became alarming. Ere long, it w:rs
whispered on the streets that his situa¬
tion was critical. Relatives and friends
proffered every assistance. They were
politely hut firmly told that assistance
was not needed, lie was not a man to
lie “set up with.” Ilia only attendant
was a female servant. Once or twice,
or perhaps oftenor, he requested his
faithful manager, Walker, to sleep in (
an hardly adjoining room; but Walker was
warm iu bed before he was
aroused by a message to the effect, that
Mr. Daniel wished to see him. Hurry¬
ing on his clothes, lie would go at once
to tho dying man’s bed, where in a fee
file voice ibis strange announcement
would be made to him.
“Walker, you must really pardon
me, but the truth is, that the very fact
of your being in the house makes me
so nervous that I cannot, vest. Please
go home.”
Home the manager of tho Examiner
would go, sometimes long after mid¬
thoughts. night, leaving What the those sufferer to his own
were, no man
will ever tel! for none ever knew. He
must have known that his days were
numbered, for when lie received a bou¬
quet oi the earliest Spring iiis flowers sent
him by the daughter of friend Mr.
Wynne, lie took it in his wasted hand,
returned his thanks for the gift, then
laid it aside, murmuring, “toolate now;
loo late!”
The editorial conduct of the Examin¬
er had been in the charge of John
Mitchel for many weeks. Daniel no
longer concerned himself about it. liis
will was made ; ho was ready to depart.
Uis physicians knew be could not live,
but they expected him to linger ten
days or a fortnight longer. Plied with
stimulants, while. he might bear up yet a good
But the last hour was at hand.
The exact circumstances of his death,
as told to me, are these : On making his
usual morning call, Doctor “Rawlings
found his friend’s pulse sinking rapidly.
No stimulant being at hand, the supply
in the house being exhausted, ho de¬
tle spatched of French a servant brandy. in haste It to get quickly a bot¬
was
brought. When il came, lie proceeded
forthw ilh to make a strong toddy. The
patient was then lying close to the outer
edge of distance the bed. Dr. Rawlings stood
some off, near the window,
stirring the toddy. Suddenly his at¬
tention was aroused by a noise behind
hint. Looking quickly in that direc¬
tion, he saw that the patient had, by a
strong effort, turned himself over and
lay on his back in the middle of the
bed, with his eyes closed and his arms
folded on his breast. Thinking that he
was praying he would not disturb him,
but continued to stir the toddy a few
minutes longer, so as to give him time
to finish his prayer. A sufficient time
having elapsed and a need of a stinut
laut being urgent, the Doctor went to
the bed and leaned over.
John M. Daniel was not in this world !
