The Funds 8 ecured.—W e learn un¬
officially that the result of the confer¬
ence betwoen the Board of Trustees of
the Public School of Columbus with
Dr. Sears was the securing of one
thousand dollars for the school, and it
was thought a similar amount could be
secured annually for a few years. It
seems that the Board of Trustees, of
which Dr. S. is President, who have
charge of the “Peabody Fund," have
resolved to give to no one place more
than one thousand dollars. It is trust¬
ed, however, that, considering the great
pecuniary losses and destruction Inflict¬
ed upon our city by the Federal forces
under Gen. Wiison, and other circum¬
stances, and the splendid prospects of
the institution, that Dr. Sears may make
such statements to his Board as to'cause
them to make our school an exception
to the rule, and grant a large sum for
its advancement.
We have heard of negotiations being
on foot to establish a female school,
early in January, in the lower story of
the present building. Next October
the Trustees will take charge of the
Academy building, and then have a
fine institution for girls.

Preparations Beino Made.—P re¬
parations are being mado at several of
the churches tor the celebration of
Christinas Day. The Catholic church,
as usual, will have beautiful music and
ceremonies, but the order we have not
heard.
At the Baptist church, the base¬
ment room will he beautifully adorn¬
ed, and an elegant repast be given
to the Suuday School scholars by the
congregation. There will be an abun¬
dance, of choice singing, and we pre¬
sume other pleasures will be provided
for.
At the Presbyterian church wo hear
a similar affair will take place, and
clothing will be distributed to the poor¬
er children.
’Tis said that at the Episcopal church,
on Obristinas Eve, the choral service
will bo magnificent. The choir have
been practicing new music. Some of
the members have as sweet, pure and
entrancing voices as ever gave richness
and beauty to song. A number of boys
have also been trained to sing on the
oc ? asi ou - The audience room will be
most . beautifully ornamented. The
ser
vice will charm heart aud soul.—

most charming amateurs in Columbus
and the “city down the river,” as well
as a lady who was the admiration of all
during the “singing evenings" last
year, will take a part. The music will
be selected with that taste which has
always characterized the amateur con¬
certs of Columbus. The affair will be
highly enjoyable, and a most exhilara

The object we know not. Columbus
can boast more musical talent than any
place of its size that we know of, and
her musical entertainments are always
pleasant.

Of a poople—bleeding to death I

That Hopo may reign in our Homes again,

A Prayer to Omnipotence ;

“Mark Twain” On a Turkish
Lunch. — I never want another one.
The cooking appaialus was in the lit¬

was all open to the street. The cook
was dirty, and so was the table, and it
had no cloth on it. The fellow took a
mass of sausage meat, coated it round a
Wire, and laid it on a charcoal tire to
cook. When it was done he laid it
aside, and a dog walked in and nipped
it. He smelled it first, and probably
recognized the remains of a friend.
The cook took it away from him, and
laid it before us. Brown said “I pass”
—he plays euchre sometimes— and wo
all passed in turn. Then thu cook bak
od a broad, flat wheateu cake, greased
it well with the sausage, and started to
bring it lo us. It dropped in the dirt,
and he picked it up and polished it on
the seat of liis breeches, and laid it be¬
fore us. Brown said, “1 pass.” We
all passed and called a new deal. Ho
put some eggs in a frying pan, and stood
pensively prying slabs of meat from be¬
tween his teeth with a fork. Then lie
used the fork to turn the eggs with—
and brought them along. Brown said,
“I pass.”' All followed suit. We did
not know what to do, and so we order
