Christmas in Atlanta. The Finance

And so the poor dog got none.”
ion.N.NV at His Old Tricks.—A t
the laic term of Troup Superior Court,
Pope’s Order No. 40 against the press
of Georgia was discussed. During the
discussion Mr. B. II. Hill made the fob
lowing statement:
The President seemed to bo astonish¬
ed that the order was being so acted
on, and said be had received a memo¬
rial from Georgia ou the subject of
this order and called on General Pope
for an explanation about it, and that
General Pope had made a report, saying
the order was not intended to have such a
construction, and was not intended to
interfere with the advurtisem nts of civil
and county officers whose advertisements
were regulated by law.
The editor <.f the Chronicle & Senti¬
nel states that no wrote to Pope upon
the subject some weeks since, and has
received no reply from HeaJquarters in
the Saddle. There is a li< out some¬
where, and wo hope that the nigger
siieetb will receive no pay for their sto¬
len patronage until this maber is cleared
up.

Senatorial District, we lea: n yesterday
took his own lib by a dose c strychnine.
Wc regret to learn the unfortunate oc
( urrence. Mr. Pringle had the reputa¬
tion being a modest and pi aceful man,
and was held iu high estoert in the com¬
munity of Barnesviile, in which he
lived. Mr. Pringle spent several days
oflast week in this city. His name
was brought before the Ci nveution as
a candidate for Bergeant-at Arms.
Another Circus Smashed.— Haight
and Chambers’ circus company met
with a serioub accident th) othor day,
on the railroad between Richmond and
Columbus, Texas. Wfeu fourteen
miles from Richmond he -rain ran off
the track. A number of horseB were
killed and the elephant was severely
hurt. A number of the principal per
formers were also painfully but not dan
gerously injured.
Benjamin 'Wade is decidedly at outs
with Grant. Benjamin, some days ago,
addressed the General a letter for the
purpose of having bis son transferred
to Carlisle barracks, lie -ays he’ll be
damned it the acting Vice President of
the United States isn’t at loast entitled
to an answer to a letter.
Personae. —The editor of the Augus¬
ta National Republican wishes to know
what has become of W. J. Pollard, for¬
merly of Mobile, Ala., aud who publish¬
ed in 1865 the “Masonic Jewel.”
On last Tuesday, says the Early
County New s, the Dennis plantation
said to be one of the finest in Eariy—
containing 1,500 acres, was offered for
rent for the next year, and only |200
being offered, it was withdrawn. Com¬
ment is unnecessary. Straws show,
etc.
DessKTKKB —Henry H. Glisson, of
Burke, and l)r. Edward E. Lane, of
Emanuel, both of whom are members
to the Convention in Atlanta, decline
to appear.
Presidential—^T he friends and sup
porters of Gen. Grunt held a meeting at
Faneuil Hall, Boston, on Wednesday
night. The house was only half full.
Hon, Wiley Edmunds presided.
Cotton Tax.— It is believed that the
Senate will reject the House bill repeal¬
ing the cotton, and propose, instead, a
reduction of the tax to one cent per
pound.

oughly narcotized. In Virginia the
people are alive and active. The Con¬
stitution now in process of construe
tlon by the bones and baujos Conven¬
tion in Richmond will be voied down.
In Alabama tbe whites and decent and
sensible negroes are banding together
to defeat the work of the menagerie
lately assembled in that State. Clubs
are being formed in every county, and
we scarcely ever take up an Alabama
exchange without being cheered by ob
serving tbe proceedings of large and
enthusiastic meetings composed of tho
best men of that State. In our own
State our friends in other sections are
far in advance of us. From Cherokee,
from South-Western, from Middle and
Eastern Georgia, we reeeive sounds of
busy preparation for the coining strife.
The white men of the first named sec
tion, have repented of their error in
voting for the concern now assembled
in Atlanta, and will rally to defeat its
schcmes of oppression and , destruction. ,
We know that in times of deep de
spoudency like the present, it isdiflicult
to make men cease to brood over pres- j
eut troubles to look at the avalanche of j
new and terrible dangers which are rap- '
idly advancing upon them.but wo feel it
our bounden duty to say that the griefs
and trials of this day are light in com¬
parison to those in storo for us if tho
infernal machinations of the knaves
and vagabonds of Pope’s Convention
are successfully consummated, Wo
will be utterly ruined and disgraced as
a people, if the barbarians shall succeed
in fixing upon us a constitution of their
making, and if they shall gain control
of the political machinery and patron¬
age of the State. The contest w hiclt is
to be forced upon us is one calculated
to test to the very core the fortitude and
courage of every Georgian, hut it is
one that should be met with the heroic
determination of men who struggle to
save all that makes live sweet and re¬
spectable. We have to fight a party
powerful iu numbers and complete in
drill and organization. It is controlled
and manoeuvred by able and unscrupu
lous men, and is backed by no armed i
force. With all of these advantages it i
be defeated, but not by disorganized j

The people of the Stale opposed lo
tho ratification of tho so-called Constitu¬
tion, to be submitted to the people ou
the 4lh of Febuary next, have by gene¬
ral consent imposed upon lie Executive
Committee the responsibility of recom¬
mending the policy best calculated to
accomplish its defeat. The Committee
properly appreciates this groat trust.,
and will take no action until they have
obtained the opinions and advice of our
wisest and best friends North and

nastily in a matter involving our exis¬

sacred in this life.
The Committee earnestly recommend
the formation of Conservative Clubs iu
every county in the Slate, where not al¬

sites are requested to forward to the
Chairman of the Executive Committee,
at Montgomery, the names of the Presi¬

as our policy is determined. Iu tho
meantime it is to be hoped that no good

Nothing at this time is betted calculat

our ranks, than the announcement oi
candidates for office. Let it be demon

is subservient to patriotism. Should it
become advisable to change our policy
timely notice will be given,

Many prominent men from different
portions of tee State wi!’. be iu attend
