The SRMmshlp Atlantic In the Sale.
We are indebted to the Purser of the
Atlantic for the following interesting
sketch illustrating the severity of the
gale si sea :
The Atlantic left Sonthsmpton on the
88ih November, and for the first week
encountered no very heavy weather,
though the extreme changeahleness
the wind was remarkable. It seldom
blowing more than four hours from one
point. About TO a. m. Dec. 8, a severe
squall from the southeast struck the
S
lv as it had risen Soon however, a
strong gale sprung up from the north
west aud in a verv short tine increased
to a perfect hurricane. The captain ini
mediately headed the sbip ti the wind
and made nreoartions to lav to until the
vio'ence ot the tempest should abate,
About 4 n. m. some part of the gearing,
which connected the pilothouse for
ward with the rudder, give way, and

heavy storm of snow and h- il had now
set iii, which demolished cabins the
and soon rendered the very wet
and uncomfortable, causing the
gers to assemble in the dicing saloon,
The waves were now of an
height, and the huge mass ;s of

of blinding spray were
sweeping the deck, and all whose
would permit sought shelter. The
was ruaniug slowly, hut riding
waves [so steadily that those in
warm and brilliantly lighted
were scarcely conscious of the
tempest without. But suddenly,
8 o’clock, a tremendous sea broke
the bow, and the immense body of wa
ter rushing against the forward part
the house on the main deck, crushed
in like an egg shell, leaving not a
stick standing for a space of more
twenty feet. This pact was occupied
a sleeping room by the firemen,
ot whom were in their herthsat the time.
Five were completely buried in the ru¬
ins, one of whom named Martin Law¬
ler, had his thigh dislocated. The rest
were rescued without serious injury.
The carpenter’s shop was also demol
islied, and most of his tools washed
overboard. The pilot house on the
hurricane deck above was completely
lilted from its position, violently jerk¬
ing the wire attuened to the engineer’s
bell, causing him to slow down. The
hurricane deck remained standing, in¬
securely supported by the stanchions at
the side of the ship. One of the guns
was dismounted and carried nearly to
the stern of the vessel. The smaller of
the two ship bells was swept overboard.
The captain’s room, Just behind gutted. the
pilot house, was completely officers,
The rooms of the other being
further aft, fared rathor better, though
none entirely with escaped. The forward
boats, the heavy iron davits that
supported them, were swept complete
lv away. Seven of the beams support¬
ing the main deck were snapped like
pipe stems, and the forward hatch was
stove in. The water rushed down into
the steerage, to the great consternation
of the passengers there. Their terror
was heightened by a dense cloud of va¬
por which rose from the fire room, caus¬
ing in their excited minds the supposi¬
tion that the ship was on firo, This re¬
sulted from the descent of an immense
body of water through the firo hatch
atid engine room, filling the fire room
up ed to the grate bars. As the ship reel¬
from side to side, the water came in
contact with the bottom of the furnaces
and was immediately converted into
steam, which The quickly penetrated along the
whole ship. water rushing
the gangway of tiro main deck burst

a considerable quantity entered there.
Up to this lime the composed, passengers had the
been very quiet and of them but from
shock which threw most
their seats, the noiso of crashing tim¬
bers, the cloud of vapor, rnd the floor
covered with water, ad combined,
proved loo much for the.r calmness,
and great alarm and confusion for a
time prevailed on the part of many of
them. Shortly after, a V’olent squall
blew the sails out of the gaskets aud
quickly converted them i ito ribbons.
At the same time the rudder head was
sprung, and the after steen geapparatus
gave way, bo that we wer> obliged to
steer by relieving tackles. One of the
sailors wp.s washed overbo rd, but for
tunately caught a rope, am was rescu
ed. Tire violence of the t mpest now’
abated somewhat, aud the officers were
enabled to make tempo ary repairs.
The ship was making com ulerable wa¬
ter and the steam pumps vere sc O
work to clear her. The leather be¬
of came intensely cold, and t wo or three
the crew had their hand frostbitten.
The barometer, w’hieh bud at one lime
descended to the extraordinary low
point of 87 7-10 inches, now rose rapid¬
ly, and about five o’clock the next
morning the weather had moderated so
far that the ship could again he put on
her e- ui'se. With daylight the lull of
iect of the storm became visible, and
on surveying the broken limbers, the
gaping seams, and shuttered bulwarks,
it seemed a matter of wonder that the
ship bad survived the learlul straining
to which site had been subjicted. There
can be littie doubt that but or the great
strength of her hull and engines she
must all inevitably have gone down with
on board.— N. 7 Timen.
