—At Long Branch on yesterday a lady
was rescued from danger of death by the
coolness, intrepidity and gallantry of
President Grant. Miss Martin, accompa¬
nied liy two gentlemen, her brother and a
friend, in a phaeton . re riding on Cedar
avenue, in the vicinity of the ground- of
Mr. John Hoey. The horses in some way
became frightened and unmanageable, and
dashed off at a furious speed. The imise
attracted the attention of the President,
who had just made ft call on Mr. lb oy.
Mr. Hoey started across lots, and the
President pushed his horses ut full speed
by the road. He reached the scene of
the disaster in time to seize the horses
and arrest them with the assistance of
Mr. Hoey, and to rescue tho lady from
the peril she was in, surrounded by the
debris of the demolished vehicle and the
excited and unmanageable Lorsos. The
President took the lady in his arms and
placed bor in his carriage, and conveyed
her to the residence of Mr. llooy, where
she was kindly cared for by the lady of
the house. The gentlemen were thrown
from the conveyance and received more
or less bruises. The lady, having recov¬
ered from her fright, was conveyed to her
residence. This instance is only one of
many where the President has furnished
evidence of his gallantry and intrepity.—

Iu a detachment of
policemen under a sergeant made a raid
upon a disorderly color house kept by a female

the inmates. These were brought up be¬
fore the Muyor and lined. Some time af¬
terwards the colored woman made com¬
plaint before a Justice of tho Peace, char¬
ging the sergeant with trespassing upon
her sacred domain. The 1
case came up
and the Justice lined the sergeant twenty

duty under municipal authority, tt is a
misdemeanor under the laws of the State
to arrest parties appealed, without a warrant.
