TilE ASJIAXTEE WAR.
The Gold Coast ami Its Inhabitants.
Correspondence of tbe Neff York Tribune.]
Cai>k Coast Castle, Nov. 3.—First and
most important is the consideration of
t ;e- general prospects of this war upon
which the British nation has embarked,
It is evident :hat no course remained to
England but to retire altogether from
coast upon which she has been settled for
300 years, or entirely to overthrow tho
power of the Ashantee empire. This em¬
pire possesses a large extent of country,
sod can place a lighting force of 100,000
men for rue purposes of attack, and per
haps double that number for the purpose
of defense, in the field. It is uu ag

been occupied iu swallowing up her neigh,
bore, annexing their territories, and r -
dneing perhaps their people to slavery. Aithougn
just a little less sauguinarv and
blood-thirsty than its neighbor, Dahomey,
the Ashantee kingdom may be said io be
cemented and watered by blood. Blood is
sued in streams upon every public
sion, whether it be a coronation, a birth
day. a funeral, or the declaration of peace
or war. There is one grand "custom ’
annually at which it is calculated that
lO.O(K) slaves are put lo death, and it is
probable that as many more are Gaugh
tered upon the monthly and oilier minor
“customs." What happens upon a grand
scale at the capital, takes place upon a
small scale elsewhere. If 10,000 slaves
king, are slaughtered at tho death funeral rites that of a
1,000 are put to at of a
minor chief. 10 al that of auy one of
station or position. This is so well un¬
derstood that when a great man dies his
slaves instantly take to the bush and
endeavor to escape to avoid ike doom
which they know awaits them. Shou d
slaves be short, any one accused of crime
is seized, and should malelactors
kidnapped warning, poor and insignificant people are
with or wnhont pretext and
made to sutler, such is tne power with
which Great Britain is now involved in
war. The natural features and extent
Ashantee south of the capital, Ooomassie,
are entirely unkuoun, She dues not
allow, and never has, as far as is known,
allowed a traveler, while or black,
penetrate bey n l the capital, and ihe

the tribe lying beyond her. The Ashantees

eral or a eoldetr runs aivay he is put to
death, and the course of ail Ashantee geu
erul, when things are going definitely
against him in a battle, is to sit upon a
powder barrel and Hash his gun into it.
ASHANTEE SOJ.DIF.ltY.
Brave as the Ashantee is, he never lights
iti the open field; he will hold the buffi—
as has already been proved iu the skirm¬ aud
ish with the British—with a courage
tenacity unsurpassable by any white
lioops. But Ins tradition is never to
light uncovered. In tins he somewhat
resembles the lied Indian. From this
description of the Ashantee, it is evident I
that the task which England has set In her
self is by no means an easy olio. the

enable them to sweep away the Ashautees
w.thout the latter being able to approach
within range of their own firearm.-; but
between Gape Coast and Coomussie there
is not an acre ot open ground. The dis¬
tance to be traversed is 150 miles. Tbe ;
River Prab, which forms the proper
boundary' of the Ashantee Kingdom, is
about 70 miles from Gape Coast, aud as
the Ashautees are breaking up their camps
within a few miles of ibis town, and are !
retiring slowly homeward, it is propable j
that the British will be able to cut a road ;
to the Prah wide enough for four men to !
march abreast, and that the troops wi 1 :
encounter no opposition upon their up j
ward march until they arrive on the banks .
of the boundary river. Beyond dangerous that, j j
.heir task will be arduous and
enough to satisfy tne most adventurous >
spirit. They will have to tight their way I

enemies, and through w hich they can i
only advance in single file by a path a tew !
spare aiuttiuuilion. And yet with Ihe :
calm self-confidence peculiar to the Au- j
glo-Saxon race, there is not a soul here '
who doubts for an instant that Sir Gurnet
VVolseley will reach Ooomassie. If one]
were to hint at the possibility of defeat he 5
would be laughed at, nay tne suggestion j
would be treated as a joke: and .yet the j
expeditions of Cartes and P.z irro to the ;
iMioital of the Incas were child s play to
the work which these 1,500 British troops j
have set themselves to do. Taere are no .
great inducements before them, such as :
those which animated tho Spanish auven- ,
tu.r;. T nereis no new world to be won,no
eaty of fabulous wealth to be reached; it ;
is purely a case of duty. If I were to say ^
to any of these officers working unremit, j
tinaly in a suu of 150 deg. of hei’, ‘'Sir,,

Seeing then, that no one here doubts
[ cease to doubt myself; but 1 fear that

a remnant of the gallant fellows who cross
it on their advance. 1 have said nothing

the middle of February, is by no meats
highly injurious to Europeans, and will be
felt even less than would otherwise be
the case by men kept up by thestmm.
