also crowded with* eager spectators,
and all was excitement; not unmingled
with tnacli a! irtn. ! Meanwhile; ‘ that
the animal might not escape, Mayor
Swift had sent to the Arsenal for uncou

the side-door on Walnut street, and the

Judging from the present condition
and former history of the Cherokee na
tion,. it would seem no longer a problem
whether the aborigines of this country
are susceptible of a high slate <>f civil
ization and refinement. It is compara
tively but a levy years since these people
were a trihe of savages, without a .writ
ten language, when one'of their number,
the immortal Geo. Guess mingling among
his pale facetl brethren, and seeing them
fully loaded, and the crowd kept j read and write, conceived the grand
i waiting, expecting some great result, j idea wf reducing his own language to a

tors being weaker than the curiosity | he retired, “ in savage grandeur,” from
of the .crowd. The elephant,
fined, became less restive, and finally
stood still, and was strongly chained
and numerous ropes placed about him,
when he was dragged out into the arena
where the fetters were all removed, ex
cepting th<* chains upon his feet, and af
ter some liiile trouble, Herr Driesbach
succeeded in getting him to lie down.—
He roared fiercely at first, hut at length
submitted, and with a degree of grace
did his maslet’s bidding. The animal
being thus entirely subdued, the crowd,
which hud assembled in the interior, be-
2 plaudits upt
Driesbach, who thereupon mounted the
elephant’s head as the animal lav in the
arena, and addressed the assemblage,
returning Ins thanks, and remarking that
that was ihe proudest day of his life.
The wrecks were cleared away as
well as possible, and it was announced
to the crowd, both inside and out, that
there would be a jteiformance in'the even
in’' as usual.

John Ross, the celebrated Chief of the
Cherokees, has been reelected to the of
fice of Principal Chief for the next four
years, and George Lowery, Assiiant
Principal Chief.
After taking the oath of office, Mr.
Russ before a joint meeting of the two
Houses,delivered his Inaugural Message,
which is a businesslike document, anti,
in brevity at least is worthy of imitation
by our white Sachems.
Mr. Ross commences by congratula
ting the nation upon the orderly and
peaceable manner in which the late elec
tions have been conducted.. The con
dition of the people, individually and
collectively, is said to he prosperous.
The efforts of the Temperance Societies
have been encouraged, and their num
bers greatly increased, and many con
verts have been added to variotisCkurch-
es in the Nation. During the past year,
the District Schools have been more
flourishing than hitherto, and the system
is commended to the particularregardand
fostering care of the Legislature. The
buildings for two Seminaries, designed
lor the instruction of the youth of the
country, in the higher branches of edu
cation, are in progress of erection. A
Delegation sent to Washington, to bring
the unsettled business of the Nation and
the United Slates to a close, had been
