Dr. Sway tie. Dear Sir—I feel called by a sense of duty
which was agreed to. He
views at length upon the subject, in
which he urged the annexation of all
the territory now in our possession,
leaving the question of slavery to be
determined by the people inhabiting it.
Messrs. Yulee and Hale submitted sub
stitutes, which they intended to offer at
the proper time. That of the latter is
similar to the YViltnot Proviso.
The Senate then proceeded to the
consideration of the order of the day,
being the Ten Regiment bill.
Mr. Clayton resumed his remarks,
contending that the increase of the force
in Mexico was unnecessary. He was
willing to vote all necessary suppli
for the army now in Mexico, but there
was no occasion for augmenting the
army, and he would therefore oppose
‘ 3 increase.
Mr. Butler gave notice that he would
move to recommit the bill to-morrow
for amendment, so as to increase the
number of privates and subaltern offi-
trs for the regiments now in Mexico,
stead ol creating new regiments.
The Senate then went into Execu

took place.

The Speaker called upon the commit
