A gentleman now in this city saw the let-

faltering and giving way, was that flag
seen restoring the order and fate of bat
tle. Before that flag he had seen tbe
enemy scattered like autumn leaves.
And once was seen the proud hero of
Buena Vista who, ns my friend from
Mead (Mr. Harris) has said,'was like a
pyramid of strength, around whose
summit the storm and tempest of war
raged, bending his eagle gaze with the
deepest interest. Upon it hung the fate
of battle, and the destiny ot the Ameri
can army. The result answered more
than Iris expectation—that flag waved ' n d«
triumphant, and a shout of victory came
booming across the plain.
The Brave Kcntncklam.
. $>> o Louisville Journal contains a
long and interesting account of a very
impressive ceremony, which lately took
place at Frankfort, on the presentation
of tlie Colors of the 2d Regiment of
Kentucky Volunteers to the Represen
tatives of the people of that State. The
Journal says;
jTjtyJ Commonwealth describes tbe
scene ns one of deep and most thrilling
interest. At the appointed hour, the
G4y£riMH«‘tbe Senators,' the Judges of
the Court'of A ppeals, and the heads of
the Departments, took their seats, by
invitation, within the bar of the House,
the lobby and the galleries being crowd-
cd with spectators. A few moments of
•deni expectation ensued, and the door
of tfle hall was thrown open, and the
tailored and glorious, pierced by
they were ascending, charging ten times
their number with the bayonet—when
the bravo McKee fell, covered with glo
ry, while calling to his men to • rally*
and renew the unequal conflict—when
the noble Clay, succeeding to the com
mand, refused to order a retreat, but
gave the command 4 right about face,
torwnrd march,* they slowly retired,
pouring red hot volleys upon the press
ing foe—this flag was borne above their
heads, to cheer them on to such noble
deeds.
44 Twice by bis (Gaines) personal
prowels, aided by one or two comrades,
did he retrieve it from the enemy, hav
ing made them pay for their daring at
tempt to capture his flag with their lives.'
It was borne buck, and planted in the
centre of the 2d Regiment. That aw
ful- night of the 23d, when every man
