THE TREATY CONFIRMED,
e indebted to the Charleston Erehirig
News, for the following information, which was
copied by that paper from the Baltimore Clipper of
Saturday last:
“ Baltimore, March 11,1848.
We have the gratification of announcing th
morning, that at 9 o’clock last night, the U.
Senate, after a laborious session, ratified and con
firmed the Treaty of peace with Mexico, by Ayes
38 to Nays 15. Giory enough for one day!”
The modification of the original project extends,
it appears, to six articles; but the two principal
stipulations relating to boundary and indemnity for
the acquisition of territory, remain unaltered. An
important provision, that the fifteen millions should
be* payable to order has been stricken out.
The correspondent of the Baltimore Sun express
es himself as follows, as relates to this clause of the
treatyFirst, such a provision would work into
the hands of speculators; and secondly, it would
deprive ua of every check on the conduct of Mexi
co, as far as her expectation of our money is con
cerned. Though the three million instalment is
paid down on the exchange of ratifications, yet the
remaining twelve millions,, as Jong as they remain
-unpaid, are a sort of surety for the good behaviour
of the Mexican rulers.

If the treaty is ratified, it cancels all claims for

There are other provisions and stipulations
the treaty, ol infinitely higher importance, which
demand the most solemn and deliberate consider* 1

It is provided that the territory ceded—contain

newly acquired territory, if this treaty be ratified, in
