Caing up a Gang of Robber*.
The Weitcro hunler (though rarely)
has been set upon by robbers, for the
pack of furs he was carrying upon his
back to some of the seaport towns to dis
pose of; but as the fur hunters are gen
erally on foot, and from habits of watch
ing about lor cither hostile Indians or
■wild animals, arc always on their guard,
and as the robbers well know that they
are, to a man, riflemen who seldom miss
tbeir mark, they avoid them. During
my rambles in the wilds and fastnesses
ol'Cnlilornia, I became acquainted with
many of them, some from the back set
tlements of the United Slates, others
from Canada.
I have hunted for months with them,
and witnessed some conflicts between
them and wild animals, in which the
utmost daring and recklessness were ex
hibited by the hunter. These arc not
the men that robbers like to encounter,
but I have said they sometimes take u
liking to the valuable packs of furs,
which, if they find any facility for ob
taining, they may make the attempt up
on. It is the climax of cruelty to plun
der those poor fellows of packs which
were procured only by outlaying lor
months in the depths of the forest and
wilds oflhccountry, and not unfrequent-
