ry in the new territories. Cass would not. Cass
was not the candidate of the South. Tbe South
ern delegates exerted themselves to defeat him.
They were disappointed in his nomination; he is a
native of a free State—he has no interest in slave
ry. Butler is not a slaveholder, and has ever been
among those Kentuckians who are favorable to
emancipation.”
Gen. Casa comes before us, recommended by
Southern men, as being all we conld ask for; yet,
the Boston Times, Bay State Democrat, Sentinel

North mall his feelings.” Recommended by the
Plain Dealer—" If yon want to support a slavery
propagandist, vote for Gen. Taylor—Gen. Cass is
not your man.”
Gen. Cass comes before ns, perfectly satisfacto
ry to the Vermont Democracy, who passed the fol
lowing resolution in a State Convention:
“It is our opinion Congress has the constitution
al power to prohibit the introduction of slavery into
tbe territories, and it is the duty of Congress to ex
ercise that power immediately, the one pledged to
oppose, by every lawful and constitutional means,
tbe extension of slavery.” Recommended by Hor
ace Everett as the man for tbe “ Free Soil party”
—by his friends and neighbors in Michigan, wh
passed the following resolution; “Hostility t
tbe extension of Human Slavery is now, and cvc
has been, one of the principles of the Democratic
creed.”

Messrs. Editors—The question of the “ exten
sion of slavery” into the territories of the United
States, recently acquired by the treaty with Mexi

in the exercise of the right of opinion, I beg
leare to make, through the columns of your very
valuable paper, a few suggestions, and to define the
true Southern ground on this vital question os I
understand it.

to participate in the' enjoyment and the occupation
of the territory. Anil it is not only the right, hut
