An eldetly gentleman from Virgini

Some of the jurymen refnnrkeel that as

corpse he started, turned pale, and
looked oft if going to faint. He rallied,
however, hut his subsequent movements
occasioned some curious remarks. The
jury having rendered a verdict of death
by drowning, were discharged. Mow
alt turned round to look for his foreman,
but behold he was hot there. We step
ped out of doors and saw him high up
in the street on a half run,- when he
turned a corner. AH sort* of inquiries
were made,-but nothing could be heard
of hun. This, with his turning pale at
the first view of the corpse, occasioned

afterward. John Mowatt was a bache
lor ol thirty-five, and Pelsue had seen
about thirty summers.
On a certain day, about one month
thereafter, a lady in deep .mourning
stepped into Mowail’s store and asked
for a pair of shoes. While John was
trying how the shoe fitted, the lady in

ette repose here. He is side by side
with his wife ; and at their head is the
stone slab of G. W. Lafayette. They
are all mere stone slabs. Lafayette’s is
the last—close by the wall—and rests
on stones and pehbles. Not a single
blade of grass grows near it. I felt sor
ry to see it look so neglected. I asked
our guide if it was visited "by many peo
ple. He said : * No—sometimes the
Americans visit it.* 1 thought that was
very strange.”
