The shadows'of the little wood
Cloeed round' us in Hie burning noon,
The lucent shadows of the leaves.
Yet tender with the green of Jane.
And there, while in a happy dream.
We wandered inward from the Bun,
Winding and turning at our will,
The famous story was begun.
A story prodigal of love,
Of youth, and beauty born of youth ;
Of. sorrow tempered by romance,
And trial glorifled'by truth.

STE AMBOAT LINE!
Or waait haply passing then?
It jnight be trn».of any time
Since women were beloved of men.
I listened, yet I did not heed'; ‘
A tippling voice was all I heard,
- That, softly cadenced, had for me
The mnsic of a. atoning r fafrd.
The tale went on, the 'voice I heard.
Yet all that I recall is this—
That earnest &ce, those dreamy eyes.
That little month too'sweet to irfg*.
The tale* went on with many a pause.
With frequent outbursts of delight,.
As breaks and openings of the wood
Its hidden beauties gave to sight.
Apbeosani gleamed across oar path,
A squirrel shot a sudden tarn,
And now the cuckoo, sung, and now
We waded coolest breadths of fern.
• i - • - • -
The little wood was long to cross ;
Its winding paths were'hard to find;
And hours were fled ere we emerged.
And left its pleasant gloom behind.
And- then beside the rustic fence,
Whence spread the meadows many a mile,
We linger’d idly, h&ndin hand—
And pr’aps the tale went on the while.
The evening shadows, lengthened out-;
The heavy rooks winged home to nest;
The little wood was fringed with, light
Against the fiercely-flaming west; - -y yg
The sun -aet-in a fleecy haze, ■
Through bars of crimson and of gold
The sky grew cool, the. stars came out
And yet the story was not told 1

destruction of property in'tt^iWtmpr pf the
State by the earthquake of the 21st have been

damage to property. Extending in ail direc

which came clouds of .dost, and from' others
volumes of water. San Leandro creek, for
some months dry, is now a running, rapid
stream of water. In some peaces hot water
and steam gushed forth. The villages of San
Leandro and Hayward's are almost in rnins.'
Brick buildings are thrbwfi. down; hundreds
•uninhabitable, and numeyoos wooden s tru c-

only one bnilding was- uninjured. Alameda
Brooklyn, and Oakland, tdl suffered severely.
The destruction is great at San Jose and Red

sion house at San Jose is a mass of ruins. At
Sacramento, Stockton and Alaysvfile, the in
jury to buildings, is slight andlhe loss small.
Petaluma, Heathsburg, Santa Rosa, Vallejo
