Such are,General Grant’s “feelings and
sentiments.” Well hashe said that he has no
policy. He might with equal truth have-
odded that he had no principles. =- - -
Is such a man a fit person in whose hands
to'tisM tiie deSfiriiBS df the Repnblia ? _ la ®
the man in whom the colored men may safely
repose their faith V He and his party, while
tizan purposes, will recognize their forced
right pf suffrage, but should “ new exigen
cies” convince them that there is’inolpriger
any necessity for their service as voters—
should the colored men of the South prove
troublesome political serfs, and assert their
right to vote according to their convictions of
duty to themselves and the interests .-of their
countiy—then their right not only*" to suf
frage, brit to every other privilege of freemen,
will be denied. It will then be discovered
that the principle laid down in the Chicago
platform,-that the question of suffrage is en
tirely, within the jurisdiction of the States,
applies to all the States alike. The people of
the. country, white and colored, will act
wisely by trusting the government in the
hands of a President whose official action,
whatever his “ feelings and sentiments,” will
be in accordance with the principles of the
Constitution rather than in accommodation to
“new exigencies" that may arise in parlizan
policy.

The fine steamboat New Jackson,
