The Court then took up the case of George.
W. Hardcnstle, a dealer in themarket, charged]
with having committed an'assanlt and battery*
upon A Kowe Cullens. The evidence' was
beard, and case argued by Hon.' R: E. Lector
fur defence, and General Henry B. Jackson
for prosecution. The jury returned a verdict
of “not guilty,’’ia favor of defendant, and
that the prosecution was malicions, and the.
prosecutor should pay costs.
John Burney, colored, was charged with an
assault and battery. He was tried by jury,
aud the evidence for plaintiff was heard by
the Judge. One of the witnesses swore that
the affair occurred on . a dark and -stormy
night, when it was impossible to see any
thing; and that she saw the defendant, reoog-
nized him, and described the manner in
which he was dressed! The case was con-
tinned over, and the Court adjourned until
four o’clock thia afternoou.

The Baptist Faib.—The ladies' fair and

out and gave up the Contest, which was
