The apples are ripe in the orchard.
The work of the reaper is done.
And the golden woodlands redden
In the blood of dying sun.
At the cottag&door the grandsire
Sits pale in hi« easy chair,
While the gentle wind of twilight
Plays with his silver hair.
A. woman is kneeling beside him;
A fair young head is pressed.
In the first wBd passion of sorrow.
Against his aged breast.
And fur from over the distance
The faltering echoes come
Of the flying blast of trumpet
And the rattling roll of drum.
And the grandaire speaks in a whisper:
••The end no man can see;
But we give him to his country.
And we give out prayers to Thee.-

to fill any position as -a locomotive ’ engineer.
An extract from their magazine will give a
clear idea of the high motive they have had
in binding together. It says: "They have
seen the importance of keeping pace with the
improvements made daily in the,locomotive
engine, and have, therefore, adapted the plan
of forming into organizations, the better to
morally and intellectually qualify themselves
to be able to perform aD that may be required
of them by railroad managers in the capacity
of locomotive engineers.” -A system of mu

and we feel sure that if their constitution and,
by-laws, which we have taken great pains in
reading, are faithfully carried out, the asso
