Ora Weekly Scbscbiptionh.—The Charles
ton .Veins commends our plan of weekly sub
scriptions to the Morning News. It has/tried
it with great success, and declares the system
to be decidedly the best one for the city cir
culation of a daily paper. By this means our
subscribers pay for what they get, and are
never in debt to us. Besides, it comes much
easier to pay a small sum each week than a
large one every few months. We invite the
people of Savannah to send in their names
to ns, aud the Morning News will be left with
them in any part of the city; and ,tte twenty-
fire cents collected every week. There are
many people who have never token a paper
who can easily afford to do so under this plan.

Amusing.—Lieutenant Wray, as Chief of
the Detective force in this city, is frequently
in receipt of circulars, handbills, Ac., from
other parts of the country, giving potice of
crimes committed there, descriptions of the
supposed offenders, aud offering rewards for
their arrest. Some of them are very amusing,
either by reason of their curious wording, or
the absurdity, of sending them here. Not
long since the Chief received a notice, which
came from the extreme northwestern part of
Ohio, offering a reward of five dollars for the
recovery of an old mule and the capture of
the fellow that stole him. As the distance
between the point where stolen and this city
is rather extensive, we doubt if the mule
ever lived through it, even if the thief came
in. this direction.
A few days ago some bonds were stolen .iu
New York, 'and a circular was received from
the losing parties, in which, alter the bonds
were named and numbered, a description of
the supposed thief was given, upon which
we dety* any detective to catch him. The
circular said that helm'd ‘‘a mouth like a cat
fish, and looked like, an insurance agent.”
The affair was referred to a well known n^ent
here for him to furnish the points by which
an insurance agent might be'recognized from
“any other man.”

Discharged from Custody.—Nearly three
weeks ago,' a negro named Abram Wingfield,
was arrested for participation hi the murder

on the night of the third of November. It
being considered necessary to keep the fact
of the arrest perfectly quiet, in order that the
ends of justice might be attained, a particu
lar request was made to the press of the city
not to mention it. We adhered strictly to
our agreement; while parties, who in our
presence, promised to say nothing about it,
published the fact. The consequence was
that other parties concerned in the affair,
kept out of the way of the officers, who were
thereby unable to procure testimony against
the man they had arrested, or to secure the
members of the gang who did the firing upon
the party of white men, and killeclJLaw.

Thk Bace of Thursday Decided Yester
day.—It will be remembered by our readers
that we stated In onr report of the trotting
race at the Central Course, which took place
qq Thursday afternoon, that owing to the
darkness the fifth heat was not run, and the
race left undecided! Yesterday afternoon,
at three o’clock, the deciding, beat come off.
The track was very heavy, owing to the lain,
and not in proper condition for a good race;
and in consequence of the bad weather there
were but few spectators present. The two
horses, the b. m- Fannie and the s. m. Fan
nie entered by Flyim arid AVard, were brought
out on the track, and under the circumstances
trotted well. The bay mare came m winner,
in 3114. - Having won two heats the first
day this heat made her winner of the race
and purse. Time made in the three heats,
3 06 3*11,3:114. Considering the condition
of the track, this trotting was very fair.
The Theatre—Benefit of ATths Cuxb-

‘lotto-Thompson had a benefit, at tlie-Tbeatre,
aud one of the largest and finest audiences
ever brought^out by a dramatic performance,
witnessed her fifth appearance this season.
She appeared first in the sterling play of
Hick and Poor, and afterwards as “Lady
Freelove” in A Day After the Wedding, a
sprightly two act comedy. Her acting was
grand, and called forth enthusiastic applause
irom the audience. The members of the
stock company did their best in support of
the “Star,' and their acting was worthy of all
commendation. .

Wp must again appeal to onr citizens to
bestow a more liberal patron A upon the

falsity of the assertion that they cannot ap-

of a character worthy of liberal support.

the Savannah, Skidaway and Seaboard Rail

demand to have at least one line of the street
railway built and in operation before going
farther with the work upon the Seaboard
railroad, and, yesterday, ;tho contract, was
given out to Messrs. Bradley & Callahan,
who have constructed the road bed from
here to Isle of Hope, Ac., to build aud equip

city, where a lot was donated to the compa

operation shortly. Their men, who ore now

remored front there for the preserit, arid put

track to be put down, and' with a proper
force of men at work upon it, the road'Shquld

great publio accommodation that the other
lines through the city will also be built very
speedily.

The Custom House needs repairing in some
f arts of it very badly, and the work should
e done at once; but, while the Treasury De
partment is so Burrounded by red tape as at
present,* there is but little hope of prompt
ness. It'is a wonder that all those who are
compelled to be in the building are not af

Thf Columbus Swindler.—Henry A. Gil

to swindle liquor dealers of Columbus, of
which an account appeared in the Morning

day plead guilty to the offence charged
against him, in the United States District
Court, and was sentenced by Judge Erskine
to pay a fine of one hundred dollars, and be
imprisoned iri the State Penitentiary, at Mii-

sentence as the law would permit. Gilbert
was considerably affected when sentence was
passed upon him. He was a very good ap
pearing man, and made quite a favorable im
pression upon the Court. He desired to
make some explanation of the matter, but
Judge Erskine stated to him that the Court
had uo right to hear his explanation, and it
was not mode, therefore. AVe presume that
he will be sent to the Penitentiary in a few

Mortar Mixed with Blood.—A house is
being erected in the western portion of the
city, for the upper portion of the;walls of
which the mortar has been mixed with blood.
The matter creates considerable speculation
as to the why and wherefore of this curious
proceeding. It may be that a famine is ap
prehended in the future, in case of which the
occupants of the house can chisel out the
mortar and'make sonp of.it. AVe -Should

Jury week before last, found a true bill for
falsely representing himself as an Internal
Revenue officer, and endeavoring to extort-*
money from parties in that assumed, charac;

,.np attorney and np -money to employ one.
Cok D. P. Holland and Henry AVilliams were
requested by the Court to couverse with the .
prisoner and ta^e his case into consideration.
The prisoner requested to see the United
States District Attorney, aud, after a few
minutes conversation with that gentleman,
and with his counsel, be came forward and
stated to the Court that he would plead guilty
to the charge against him. The Judge then
announced to him that the next term of the
Court would bo held in February uext. and
read the law prescribing the penalty for the
offence, which stated that a person found
guilty of such an offence should be sentenced
to “pay a fine of not less, than one hundred
nor more than five hnudred. dollars, and be
imprisoned for not less thaii' six months nor
more thnn two years. The prisoner was giv
en an opportunity to withdraw his plea, if be
so wished, and await trial, but he again ex
pressed a wish to plead guilty.
United States District Attorney Fitch ad
dressed the Court, and expressed the hope
that' it would deal meroifuHv with the pris

The Court spoke of the prisoner’s personal
appearance, which was very good, and said
that his face did not look like that of. a person
addicted to doing wrong. He was then sen
tenced to pay a fine of one hundred dollars,
and to be sentenced for nine months h
Penitentiary at Milledgeville. The prii
was then remanded to jail to await such
us he could be sent to the above named in-
stitutiou.
The Court then adjourned sinedie.^ . .
