OoBOKta'e Ikqukst.—Mr. T. G. Harden, the Coro
ner of this county, held an Inquest upon the body
or Tbos. 0. Bee. her. which was found between the
ships Jno. 0. Patton and D W. Chapman, at 6 o’clock
oo Tuesday morning, tbe Sd Inst. The evldenoe in
the case showed that during the night of tbe 3d of
May, the cook and the third mate of the ship Juo.
Patton came ashore and visited a barroom and took
ssrvral drinks; at said bar room they met the de
ceased, and togther they started for the shifi. When
going on board the oook attempted to assist the third
mate, »lio was intoxicated, and deceased told tbs cook
that he, Beecher, wonld carry the mate on board, and
as they were crossing the gang plank between the two
•hips, they, that is deceased and third mate, fell be
tween the ships, and one of tbs men on th# ship Joe.
Baker threw a «ne over and rslcned the third mate.
The verdict of the JuiT was tha deceased came <
his death i.y accidental drowning la tbe
river on the night oi the 3d of May,* 1870.

Mayor Mcllhanny, ot Columbus, briefly responded
on the part of tbe visiting firemen, and his remarks
were received with great applause.
INSPECTION.
These ceremonies over, tho firemen executed a
counter movement, unwanted, and took ihoir plaoes
by their apparatus ready for iuspetion.
Tha Mayor, Board of Aldermen, accompanied by
the Mayor of Columbus and other distinguished vis
itors, passed up the line in carriages, aud slighting
returned on foot inspecting each company. I sp c-
tion over, the Hne took up the march to the ground
of Contest of skill, and after the nrces.«ary delay oc
casioned by clearing the roadway and arranging the
details tbe afternoon saw the coininencemrnt of the
contest.

Al Armory Ban.—An Interesting faatnreotthe oc-
caaion was the prceentatlan to aanh eg the Tiaiting
Companies by the "Meta" of a Bfiver Service (Pitcher,
Goblets and Salver.) Cspt. Robert Falligant, In be-
half of the Company, made tha pfeaantedon' apeech,
which was one of his most happy efforts, and was
enthusiastically applauded. Major Willis, of the
■Etna, capt Kelly, of th# Phoenix, and J. W. Horton,
of the Vigilant*, responded.
They formed in Une and proceeded to Armory Hall,
where a splendid collation was spread by the Com-
Settee of Arrangement*, and where both guests and
hosts enjoyed themselves with feasts of reasons snd
flow of souls. After discussions of minor importance
Foreman Nelson arose and presented in behalf of the
"Vigilant*” of Augusts, a beautiful set of castors,
done up in "tin.” The ring of the true metal was in
the speech if not In th* castors.

Georgia Teachers* Association.
The Georgia Teachers’ Association met iu fourth
annual session at nine o’clock yesterday. President
Dr. H. H. Tucker intho Chair, and Mr. B. Mallon,
Secretary.
The address of welcome wu delivered by Dr.
Arnold, President of Savannah Board of Kducitlon,
responded tq felicitously by Dr. Tucker on
the part of the teachers.
Messrs. J3. M: Zettlee, of Savannah, and M. V. Cal
vin, of Augusts, wers appointed Assistant Secretaries.
The minutes of the last regular meeting were read
and approved.
The regular order of business wu entered upon
and a paper on "Qualifications of Teachers” was read
by Mr. W. H. Raker. Superintendent Savannah Pub
lic Schools. Tee paper was thorough and interesting,
and was discussed by Drs. Bonnell, Tucker, Bears,
and Means; Prof Orr, Messrs. Lancaster, Niles, Ban-
aeuuor, Cann, Perdue, Mcjver, Mallon and others.
Prof. Orr read an admirable paper on "Mathe
matical Text Books,” by Prof. Rutherford, of tbe
State University.
An able paper was then read by Ur. Lancaster, of
Savannah, on "Beat Method of Teaching the Ancient
Languages.” Adjourned.

ate manner, the principles of School Architecture,
especially in relation to ventilation.
