TO LUCINDA.
When Spring comes dancing o’er the lea,
RohM in her suit of new-born green,
And laughing, poin s at winter’s frown—
Then hides him ’ncath her grass-wove screen;
And flow rets rise beneath each tread,
Scenting the dewy air around,
More sweet by mingling with the g. le,
She breathes upon the gemmy gi*o.. and.
Then, lovely girl, when morn unfolds
Her virgin charms, pure as the light
When, breaking from its eastern chains,
It rests upon the mountain’s height.
Then, dear Lucinda, Love, though blind,
Sports w ild among each opening flower,
Culling each sweet and bitter draught,
To cheer or sadden many an hour.
His polish'd darts of snowy hue,
Fledg’d by the cygnet’s softest down,
Pointed by stings from wild bees stole,
And form’d in spite of Beauty’s frown?
Enthron’d, he sits, within some rose,
Breathing perfume—in blushing mood—
And, blindly, shoots them from his bows—
Young, tender hearts, their only food.
