PROPOSAL
For publishing in St Augustine, (~E. F.J)
JL Weekly Paper,
TO BE ENTITLED
The FLORIDA GAZETTE.
It is the glorious characteristic pf the age
in which we live, that the Press, if not the
herald, is always the attendant upon every
revolution, having for its object the eman
cipation of mind or tbe happiness of man.—-
The provinces of Florida having now become
a part of the territory of the United States,
it is believed that the tide of emigration will
set rapidly towards her shores, increasing
her wealth, and filling her ports with our
enterprising and industrious fellow citizens
of the old States, and offering a home and a
refuge to the exile and the fugitive from the
oppression of European thraldom. Favor
ed py nature with a fruitful soil—abounding
in articles of luxury and commerce, and bles
sed with a climate more congenial to the
constitution of the stranger and sojourner
than the Southern States, this section of our
country must become great and powerful,
and in time rival its neighbors in agriculture,
in commerce and in arts. With these im
pressions, and under tbe belief that a well
conducted Press is one of the most power
ful auxiliaries, not only to morality and reli
gion, but in promoting the welfare of any
particular section of country, the subscribers
propose to publish in the City of St. Augus
tine, a Newspaper under the above title.
The Editors of the Gazette do not wish to •’
make promises, or te raise expectation^’>
which may never be realized. It is sufficient
to say that the politics of their publication ‘
shall be American, and their conduct in the
management shall be in strict accordance
with the maxim,
“Open to all parties—influenced by none.”
It will be the object of their industry and
labor to render the Gazette the vehicle of
the latest intelligence, political, commercial
and literary, and no effort will be spared to
render it a pleasing, an interesting and a va
luable publication.
RICHARD W. EDES & CO.
