It is like subterranean fire; the more to be dread

Eloq.uenck.—The following is an extract from
a speech delivered by a member ofthe Indiana leg
islature, on u bill to encouigage the killing of
woives which in sublimity has seldom been sur
passed.
‘‘Mr. Speaker:— The wolf is the rhost ferocious
animal that prowls in our western prairies or runs
at large in the forests of Indiana. He creeps from
his lurking place at the hour of midnight, when
all nature is locked in the silent embraces of Mor
pheus; and ere the portals of the easti are unbarred,
or bright Pheobus rises in all his golden majesty,
whole litters of pigs are destroyed.”
Homicide.—We regret to learn, says the Co
lumbia South Carolinian of the 14th. that a man
of despei ate character, named John Whitecot
ton, was killed in the lower part of this Dist. on
Tusday last, by the Deputy Sheriff, Mr. Z. Bates,
while in the performance of his official duly.—
It is said that Mr. B. had arrested or was in the
act of arresting him under the authority of a
Beach warrant, being resisted with a iirkand pis
tol, shot him dead with a pistol.
Pin Looked in the Ear.—The last number
of the Medical and Surgical Journal contains an
account of a recent event in England, where a
joungwoman nearly lost her life by allowing a
pin, with which she was picking lur ear, to fall
into it. The day when the accider t occurred is
not mentioned, but she entered the Hospital on
.ihe 28th of January, 1839, and it was not until
the '2Bth May following—four long months—
(during which she suffered the most excruciating
torment, two drachms of laudanum per day af
fording her no relief, nor inducing scarcely a mo
ment’s sleep,) that the pin was discovered and
extracted.

A REAL BLESSING TO MOTHERS.
DR. W. EVaNS' CELEBRATED SOOTHING
SYRUP, for Children Cutting their Teeth. —This
infallible remedy has preserved hundreds of chil
dren, when thought past recovery, frem convul
sions. As soon as the Syrup is rubbed on the
gums, the child will recover. The preparation is
so innocent, so efficacious and so pleasant, that no
child will refuse to let its gums be rubbed with it.
When infants ave at the age of four months, though
there is no appearance of teeth, one bottle of the
Syrup should be used on the gums, to open the
pores. Parents should never be without the Syrup
in the nursery where there are young children ; for
if a child wakes in the night with pain in the gums,
the Syrup immediately gives ease, by opening the
pores and healing the gums; thereby preventing
convulsions, fevers, &c. Sold only at Dr. Wm.
Evans' Medical Oflice, 100 Chatham street, New
York, where the Doctor maybe consulted on all
diseases of children.
PROOF POSITIVE OF THE EFFICACY OF
Dr. EVANS’ SOOTHING SYRUP.—To the Agent
of Dr. Evans' Soothing Syrup : Dear Sir—The
peat benefit afforded to my suffering infant by
rour Soothing Syrup, in a case of protracted and
jainful dentition, must convince every feeling pa
enthow essential an early application of such an
\ ivaluable medicine is to relieve infant misery and
arture. My infant, when teething, experienced
mch acute sufferings, that it was attacked with
convulsions, and my wife and family supposed that
death would soon release the babe from anguish,
till we procured a bottle of your Syrnp ; which as
soon as applied to the gums, a wonderful change
was produced, and after a few applications the
child displayed obvious relief, and by continuiug in
its use, I am glad to inform you the child has com
pletely recovered, and no recurrence of that aivful
complaint has since occurred; the teeth are ema
nating daily and the child enjoys perfect health.
I give .you my cheerful permission to make this
acknowledgment public, andwill gladly give any
information on this circumst: nee.

WASHINGTON’S BIRTH-DAY BALL.
MR. J. C. SMITH’S compliments to the ladies
and gentlemen of Augusta, and begs to irf
foim them that the usual Ball, in commemoration
of the birth of the immortal Washington, will be
given on the 21st inst, in the large ball room of the
Masonic Hall. The committee have determieed,on
this interesting occasion, to introduce a novel and
popular p an, one which has received so much
eclat in the European and Northern cities —instead
of providing a large, formal and expensive supper,
an abundant supply of refreshments cf all varieties
will be provided, with which the servants will sup
ply ladies and gentlemen, at agreeable intervals
during the evening—in short, the unpleasant style
of large suppers will be supplanted by the more
social and agreeable form of a tea party. The 22d
falling on Saturday, the Ball will be given on Fri
day the 21st inst.; this, however, will not detract
from the interest of the occasion, as the amuse
ments will, of course, continue after the dawn of
the memorable twenty second. feb 19
