.or. Editor: Will you please to give the fol
lowing notice, from the Augusta Chronicle & Sen
tinel of date January 15, IS4O, a place in the col
umns of your paper, in order that the public may
read and then look at the result for themselves.
Henry Shultz.
Hamburg, January 13 1*49
G. B. Lamar. Esq.—Sir—This is the third time
that 1 give you notice, that extensive repairs in
staiiter, on the lower part ot the Augusta Brid r e
are indispensable. The lust was given in n.y of
ftce iu Hamburg, when you informed me of having
bought the Bridge, and was to pay seventy thou
sand do ars for it; that you had paid twenty thou
sand dollar- in cash, and were to pay fifty thousand
dollais m two instalments, in one and two years
L pon which I told you it was a hazardous nur
cha>c, that you yourself were aware of the situa
lion of the title to the property, and of mine and
other claims to i;, which 1 shou.d feel it my duty
to prosecute ; and I even furnished you with come
documents al tne time, relative thereto, and advis
(d you not to pay them any more money, without
the Bank wou d make you a warranty title for
J 0 SJ P'k v ? which 1 did not think they would do
because they knew they had not a good title them
sc,vc-s : a i-d secondly, that the Btidge was old and
gcittng weaker, and became more expensive every
day ; and that it not only had to withstand the rivet
and drift w ood, but the destruction of that cursed
thing above, boats breaking loose, and tearing uo
those highland wharves, and was theiefoie Indis-
P‘ ns )6le to Keep it in the best possib e repair at
all times. If this was done, I thought it mitrlit
withstand all that, but I did not think it cou'd in
its present situation. It had stood twenty five
vcais, but that was no reason that it would stand
twenty five years more ; that the Bank had neglect
ed it most shamclully ; that they had made all the
monev thej could, and have never made a thorough
icpaii, but was satisfied with patch work, the
greater pait of which was done by negroes.
The second notice was last spring, while you
were in Hamburg and Augusta, making a change in
tne tolls ot the Bridge, when I again informed you
that essential repairs were indispensable, and to
the lower put particularly. 5 our reply was, that
you would come up yourself in the summer, exam
ine and give it a thorough repair, as soon as the
river would admit. 1 have been here all the lime,
and have not sten you making examinations or re
pairs according to promise. The river has been
low all the su timer, and is yet low enough to do
all the work necessary. The bed of the'Bridge,
and the feet ot many ol the main braces, as well
as the mortices in posts, have been much decayed
by time and the long exposure to the sun and'air
during the summer.
1 spoke to the Bridge Keeper. Mr Frazier, repea
ted y on the same subject, during the summer, who
informed me that the sickness in Augusta prevent
ed him from getting hands; but the sickness never
prevented him from getting a man to lake the
money ; tor I found one there eveiy day during the
time If he was not there himself, he had some
one in his place.
I do not know words to express my feelings up
on this subject. That a structure that has been
erected with gicat skill, at an cnoimous expense,
that lealizes twenty thousand dollars annually, and
is a common highway over a rebellious torrent, be
tween two cities and two states, by day and by
night, in all seasons of the year, for these twenty
seven years, and in which tlie whole community
are so deeply interested, and the season so favora
ble, should be so wantonly doomed to destruction,
is an unpardonable crime ; for after once gone, all
excuses and lamentations will not bring it back
again.
In conformity with a duty due to myself, as well
as to others, 1 feel it incumbent on me to make you.
and the Bank ol the State of Georgia, responsible
for nil the proceeds and damages that may occur |
from tills neglect, from the day it was wrested i
from me, until the day it is returned if a court can j
be found in the United States to take jurisdiction.
With due respect, 1 am yours,
Henry Shultz.
Hamburg, January 12, IS4O.
President and Directors of the Bank of the State
of Georgia at Avgusta and Savannah.
Gentlemen —The foregoing notice to Mr. G. B.
Lamar, is intended as a notice for you, in all its
particulars, of which you will please to take due
notice, I am yours, respectfully,
Henry Shultz.
Mobile, 25(4 May, 1843.
Mr. Geo. W. Dbnt, agent of the Alligator Line,
Augusta.
Dear Sir, —It gives us pleasure to state to you,
that we arrived here twelve hours sooner than
those passengers which we parted with at Greens
boro, and who took there the mail line for Mont
gomery. Os the four who left in this stage, but
one was enabled to stand the fatigue and come
through, whereas, we experienced,comparatively,
little fatigue from the travel. We are assured by
the passenger who came through that he met no |
’detention at Montgomery for want of a boat, so
that this may be regarded as a fair test of the speed |
of each line. We have recently tiavelied the up
per rout, and can state in great candour, that there
is no comparison between the two for comfoit; we !
found the Alligator line in fine operation, punctual
t every point, and the assurances of the company
was fulfilled in every paiticular ; we therefore re
commend it to the travelling public, notwithstand
ing the repiesentations we have heard made against
it by agents and others.
Very respectfully.
Your obedient servants,
John Bowie, yiebile.

HOWARD’S HOTEL,
Broadway , corner of Maiden Lane , New York.
Finns Hotel is one cf the most commodious in
the Union, having a front upon Broa wa>- ot
over 100 feet and upon Maiden Lane 50 feet, with I
two large wings extending in the rear 135 feet.— (
It is six stories high, exclusive of basement and i
under cellars, and containing over 200 bed cham-|
bers, each well lighted and ventilated with grates. I
besides numerous private parlors with sleeping
rooms attached, and public parlors, dining, reading t
and other rooms. There are two elegant dining 1
saloons, the floors of which, a« well as the spacious I
halls in the first and second stories, together with 1
the reading and other public rooms, are paved with
Italian marble. There is also an extensive and |
pleasant room fronting upon Broadway, fitted up
for a Ladies’ ordinary, and the ladies are provided
with attractive public parlors, and a private en
trance to the Hotel frem Maiden Lane.
The subscriber having for nine 3'ears past re- i
tcived a liberal patronage from merchants, and I
principally from gentlemen of business at his lor- 1
mer Hotel in Broad street, is satisfied from ex- *
pericnce that earl - meals to man - ate more ac- 1
ceptable; theiefore he has had Ins house so con
structed as to be able to serve meals to such at |
early hours. The hours adopted for meals are as .
follows, viz : In Gentleman’s dining room upon Ist j
floor, Breakfast at 7 or half past 7, with reference •
to the season of the year. Dinner in same at 2 j
o’clock. In Gentlemen’s dining room upon 2d
story, and also in Ladies’ ordinary. Breakfast from
|Slo 10 o’clock, and Dinner at half past 3. Printed
bills of fare are dail>- got up for the different dining
rooms, as it is optional with Gentlemen to take
j their meals in either of the Gentlemen’s dining
rooms, without giving an - notice of their choice ;
the subscriber hopes the extra trouble and expense
1 in the attempt to suit their convenience in this 1
I respect will be propci ly appreciated by a generous
public, and that a commensurate patronage will '
result therefrom.
This House possesses eveiy convenience that
the subscriocr could devise, and is universally pro
: nounced by visitors to be the most replete in it
internal arrangements —its construction for light
and air being superior to any oilier House iu the
city.
In addition to tiie many advantages and comforts
over most Hotels, it has a living spring of pu.e
soft water upon the premises, which, apart from its
intrinsic worth as a wholesome beverage, so un
i usual to be found in the lower part of the cit3’.
adds very much to the safet' of the establishment
in case of a fire on or near the premises ; a power
ful force pump being attached to the well to lorce I
water therefrom, as well as from the various cis
terns 111 the 3‘ard, to the reservoirs under the roof,
from which, bv- use of the house, water can be
forced over any part of the premist s iu an instant.
In short, this establDhment has been got up
without reference to cost.aud it is the intention of
the subscriber lo have it stand among the vcr3’ best

PEDIGREE.
J. R. H. Acklin, Esq. of Huntsville, Alabama,
certifies as follows : —•* Tom 'I unstall was foaled
mine on the 29th May, 1831. His dam was High
land Mary and her dam a full-blooded Archie mare;
tne sire of Highland Mary was old PacoleL Tom
Tunslall was sired by old Pacific, and he by old
Sir Archie. This is as far as lam able to go, tho’
I am satisfied Tom Tunstall has descended from as
good a stock as any horse in the United States.
He was a race horse of the first order, but I lear
will never be able to make a first rate race again,
owing to his leg ; it was injured when a three year
old, in training, as I believe. By addressing Har
dy Cryer, Gallatin, Tennessee, you can get a full
S pedigree of the dam of Tom Tunstall.” 't he same
Mr. Hardy Cryer certifies thus : —“ Highland Maty
combined as many or more rich crosses of thorough
i bveds than any mare ever raised in Tennessee.—
| She was got by the noted horse Pacolet, the son of
imported Citizen ; her dam Kosey Carey by Sir
Archie; grand-dam Sally Jones by the‘imported
horse Traveller, called Big Ben or Charlemaine,
(son of O’Kelle; ’s Eclipse, and one of the purest
importations of the last century;) great grand-dam
by the imported horse Wrangler;great-g-eat-grand
dam O’Possum by imported Shark; great-great
great-grand-dam by the celebrated American quar
ter race horse, Goode’s old Twigg; great-weat
groat-great-grand-dam by imported Fearnaught;
great-great-great-great-great-grand-dam by Lee’s
old Mark Anthony out of a mare by imported Mou
key.” On the sire’s side it is deemed unnecessary
to trace beyond Sir Archie. It is presumed none
will require a purer or better attested pedegree!—
