The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves
in diseases ot every form and description. Their
first operation is to loosen from the coals ol the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudities constantly settling around them ; and to
remove the hardened faeces which collect t
convolusions of the smallest intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind as to produce habitu

is well known to all regular anatomists, who ex

riIHE subscriber has opened an office, al the Drug

treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid,
he could name several persons w ho have been radi
cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fairway of being entirely re
lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee ol the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have ciiectcd
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearother
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.”
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strung terms, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own * Uy.
“ All must adroit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object”
Persons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from some respons£
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, and applicable
to every variety of reducible rupture.

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF

Dll. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
' does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that miy

iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme

say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. -Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds Himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they arc all that they
profess to be, and will do for otheis what they
have done for such as mav have used them; as
.his is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
! know that the Yellow arc just doubly as valuable
j as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
! of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used
j as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
; system in much better condition than the other
kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
how they then wished for a substitute. It has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
ascertaine i that Zney con tamed alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is .Were it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
I justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in
his city. We all know something aoout mis.

DR. E. SPOHN, a German pnysician of much

VOUS AND SICK HEAD ACHE, has the satis
faction to make known, that lie has a remedy which
by removing the causes cures effeclually and perma

families w ho have considered Sick Headache a con
stitutional incurable family complaint- Dr. S. as
sures them that ihey are mistaken, and labouring
under distress which tney might not only alleviate,
but actually eradicated by the use jf his remedy.
It is the result of scientific research, and is entirely
of a different chaiacter from advertised patent medi

HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS.
The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s
remedy for this distressing corapaint is every day
gaining is certainly a matter of much astonishment,
That so m ich suffering should have existed for ages
without any discovery of an effectual preventiv j, or
cure, is truly a subject of much regret but Dr. S.
now assures the public that such a remedy has been
invented as will convince the most credulous. The
principles on which it acts are aimpleand plain. It is
an a.. milted fact that this complaint, whether called
Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim
arily from the stomach —those who think they have
the Nervous Headache may rest assured that this
organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th=* sys
tem has become vitiated or debilitated, th/ough the
stomach, and that only through the same channel

healthy functions of the system. This object. Dr.
Spohn’s remedy is eminently calculated to aitam.
The truth of this position cannot be controverted,
and the sooner sufferers with the headache become
convinced of it, the sooner will their suffering end
in restoration of health, Dr. Spohn pledges his
professional reputation on this fact. The remedy
may bo had of apothecaries generally throughout

O. COSBY'S DYSPEPTIC BITTERS.
PERHAPS there is nothing more calculate*! to
disgust the public eye than the innumerable
advertisements of nostrums that are constantly ap
pearing in the public prints. All are ready to ex
claim, onr souls are sick, our ears are pained with
every day’s reports of ills and specifics. This state
of the public mind would seem to forbid any person
of delicate mind from sending forth any new dis
coveries in medicine, to the trial of the public.—
Still, motives of delicacy should not prevent us from
making known real which we are con
fident will benefit our fellow men. This latter
consideration has prompted che author of these bit
ters to make them known. He knows they are high
ly efficacious, for he himself, his wife, and many
friends, have given them a thorough trial. He was
himself a confirmed dyspeptic,so much, that even
his recollection was gone. By using these bitters
he has been restored to health. Mrs. Cosby was
troubled for many years, but was restored to health
by the use of these bitters. This has been the case
with many of his friends. Mr. Coeby in sending
forth this advertisement, addresses those who know
him. He has been for many years a resident of
Augusta, at which place he can at any time be
consulted about the bitters. They are good in all
cases of diseases of the digestive organs, the symp
toms of w hich are indigestion, pain or oppression

Dear Sir—My daughter,a girl of fourteen, was
sadly afflicted wun the comp amt that physicians
termed a scald head ; and 1 leared, independent of
evert other evil, that she would be bald in conse
quence. By ihe recommendation, however, of the
Reverend M r. Perrin, 1 applied your ointment to the
afflicted part; and 1 thank God that my child is
now entirely recovered from ihe disease, and is
gelling her hair as last as can be expected. The
cure was effected m lather less than two months;
during whicu time 1 used fi v dollars worth of oint
ment; 1 had spent upwards of a hundred dollars
dunng the previous three years, w ithout any benefit
whatever. ' MARY HOWARD.

Sir—The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have
been lung know nto me,as 1 have used none other
iu my rather t xiensive practice lor several years, and
if y«u think it would be to your advantage, 1 can
furnish you with twenty certificates of important
curs* which it has effected under ray own imme

and apparently perpetual ulcer,m the back of a
poor woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 216 Di
vision street, which it completely healed tn twenty
onedays. My present chief object m writing to
you, is to learn who is your authorised agent in this
city, for, being in want of a supply of your oint
ment, and the person .Mr. Boyle, from whom I used
to purchase it, having tailed and gone out of busi
ness, 1 am fearful if 1 purchase at random, that 1
may be imposed on by a counterfeit.
Your obedient servant,

Cincinnati, August 9,1837.
Dr Harrison.
Sir, —1 have no hesitation in stating, tn reply to
your note, that your “ Specific Ointment” is truly
equal to the majority of the ends for which you re
commend it. 1 qualify ray certificate by the word
majority, as it is my maxim to give no opinion in
medical matters where 1 have had no experience,
in sprains, bruises, inflammations, eruptions, w hit
lows, piles, Ac., it is ra» universal recipe. I have
also used it on the leg of a boy which had been
bitten by an adder, and the extraction of the poison,
and ultimate cure was so rapid, that my patient was
as well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to
this day
Yours respectfully,

THESE Pills are no longer among those of doubt
ful utility. They have passed away from the
hundreds that are daily launched upon the tide of
experiment, and now stand before the public as
Mhigh in reputation, and as extensively employed in
parts of the United States, the Canadas, Texas
Mexico, and the West Indies, as any medicine that
has ever been prepared for the relief of suffering
man. They have been introduced wherever it was
found possible to carry them ; and there are but
few towns that do not contain some remarkable
evidences of their good effects. The certificates
that have been presented to the propiietor exceed
twenty thousand! upwards of five hundred of
which are from regular practising physicians, who
are the most competent judges of their merits.
Often have the cures performed by this medicin
been the subject of editorial comment, in variou
newspapers and journals; and it may with truth be
asserted, that no medicine of the kinl has ever re
ceived testimonials of greater value thin are at
tached to this.
They are in general use as a family medicine
and there are, thousands of families who declare they
■ 4 're never satisfied until theyqhave a supply always
.^fhand.
They have no rival in curing and preventing
Bilhous Fevers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver
Complaints, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma,
Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen,
Piles, Cholic, Female Obstructions, Heartburn,
Furred Tongue, Nausea, Distension of the Stomach
and Bowels, Incipient Diarrhoea,Flatulence,Hat»itu
•> al Costiveness, Loss of Appetite, Blotched or Sallow
' Complexion, and in cases of torpor of the bowels,
where a cathartic or aperient is needed They are
exceedingly mild in their operation, producing
’ neither nausea, griping nor debility.
The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a
highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No
Ca,March 3d,1636:
Dr. Peters —Dear Sir, Byrequestof yourageut,
* Mr. Harrison, 1 send you a few lines respecting the
almost miraculous effect* of your pißs; and I would
j add, that you may make use ol them, in connection
with my name, in any manner you deem proper, I
' speak of their merits from experience, as 1 and my
i family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three
years ; and so great ape the benefits we have receiv
ed from them in general, that 1 would rather pur
chase them al ten dollars a box than Lave my house
without them. I will not enumerate Ihe afflictions
i they have relieved us of; but I can assure you they
were many, and of very opposite natures, w hich
ha* fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim
ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally
1 the enemy of every disease. I will mention one
* case. I have a sister who had been for a iong pe
-1 riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and
was brought by it to the very verge of the grave.
She was attended by the most eminent physicians
’ that money could procure; but all their efforts to
’ restore her to health, or even to mitigate her soffer
’ ings were fruitless ; and accordingly, we all consid
ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good
r , fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex
j pectmg every day to be her last, your pills were
t introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal
. pable were their eflects that three doses visibly re
j lieved her, and in le*S than three months she was
. perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all
s who were witness of it, (but more especially the
1 suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to
i miraculous; and yet I could mention many more
-of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills
i were equally successful in rescuing the patients
! from the jaws of death. Need I add that the popu
larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in
r this section of the country ? But this i pre*ume
you know from the immense quantity you dispose
1 of. I may mention, however,that notwithstanding
* its general use, I never heard an individual compUm
f of its effects. My residence is 12 miles from Ral-
B eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. I am, with sen
timents of regard, your ob’t servant.
A. G. BANKS.
To Dr. Peters, —Sir—For upward s of fifteen
» months, 1 have been ciuelly afflicted with Fever
and Ague; and during the time could find nothing—
* though 1 had applied to every thing that gave me
any thing like permanent relief. At length, hovv
’ ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one
■ i of our best pin sicians, and I am most grateful and
happy in being able to add, that I had scarcely used
j two boxes when 1 found that they had restored me
to perfect health. Since then, various members of
( i my family have used them with equal success—
( and consequently 1 feel it my duty to apprise you
of the fact, and to request of you to publish this
ceititicate, as I am anxious to add my public testi
, j mony to the almost miraculous virtues of your uu
. 1 rivalled medicine. Respectfully yours,

Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir—On the night of

tune, however, 1 bad in my pocket a broken box of
your pills —four of which I adrninistere 1, with
such immediate happy effect that in a few minutes
my patient was at ease, and out of danger. This
