philosophical principles upon which they are

The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves
j in diseases ot every form and description. Their
! first operation is to loosen from the coats of the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudiiies eon tantiy settling around them ; and to
remove the hardened feces which collect >
convohisions of tlie smallest intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected mas-es behind ns to produce habitu
al coslivecitas with *ll its train ofevils. or in a sud
den diarrhoea, with its eminent dangers. This lact
is well known to ail regular anatomists, who ex

the prejudice of those well informed men against
quack medicines —or medicines prepared and her

cond effect of tiie Life Medicines is to cleanse the
kidneys and the bladder, and by this means, the
liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which
entirely depends upon the regularity ofihe urinary
organs. The blood, w hich takes its red color from
the agency of tlie liver and the lungs before it
passes into the heat, being thus purified by them
and nourished by food coming from a clean stom
ach, courses freely thiongh the veins, renews every
part of the system, and triumphantly mounts the
banner of health in the blooming cheek.
.Moffat’s Vegetable Ijfe Medicines have been
thoroughly attested, and pronounced a sovereign

the Heart, Djss of Appetite, Heart-bora and Head

which afflict the human frame, in fever and

most eminently successful; so much so that in the

All that Mr. Moffat requires of his patient is
to be particular in taking the Lite Medicines strictly
according to the directions. It is not by a news

in their favor, that he hopes to gain credit. It is
alone by the resul. of a fair trial.

** The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected

“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in

the profession, as the best known means of me

highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and

“ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object.”

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting tc
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosutu
than for one to offer meal from the com stalk, to
say* nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
profess to be, and will do for others what they*
have done for such as mav have used them ; as
Jiis is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow are just doubly* as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
system in much better condition than the other
kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
how they* then wished for a substitute. It has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
ascertained that tney contained, alterative and diu
retic properties, 'i he Faculty* embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully*, for the reason that
they know what it is .Were it a patent nvystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly* do the one thousand and one curc-aiis of the
day If you wish to cleanse the sy*stem with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in
Ins city. We all know something aoout tnis.

a charm, for the relief and radical cure of accrtain
common and disagreeable “ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
success Inch has attended it through all of its
trying c cumstances, namely, “five days,”—the
same su jess which followed it in a Northern lati
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
or recipe was obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Cheveres, from the celebrated
Indian Chief Wabekothe, or Great Moon, whilst
be, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
siness in the North-west with the Indiana—
Wabenoshe prized highly and use it with invariable
success throughout his two tribes. Its known and
valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the childr en of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt
at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the
Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com
position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although
free to use it in their respective tribes, which
places it in the hands of every Indian who rely
with, I may say, religious confidence on its cura
ble powers.
Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can
be anglisizcd of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to
>l. Cheveret, when he purchased the original recipe,
and had twice assisted the Chief himself through
the tedious manipulator}' process of manufacture.
Few white men would credit the length of time
which is consumed in preparing the article for im
mediate use.

HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS.
The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s

That so much suffering should have existed for
w ithout any discovery of an effectual preventiv i°or

invented as will convince the most credulous. The
principles on which it acts are simple and plain. Jt is
an a< milled fact that this complaint, w hether called
Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim
arily from the stomach—those who think they have
the Nervous Headache may rest assured tiiat this
organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th? sys

Sir—The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have
been long known to me,as 1 have used none other
in my rather extensive practice tor several years, and

cures w hich it has effected under my own imme

and apparently p-rpetual ulcer,in the back of a
poor woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 216 Di
vision street, which it completely healed in twenty

you, is to learn who is your authorised agent in this
city, for, being in want of a supply of your oint

Sir, —1 have no hesitation in stating, in reply to
your note, that your “ Specific Ointment” is truly i
equal to the majority of the ends for which you re
commend it. 1 qualify my certificate by the word
majority, as it. is my maxim to give no opinion in
medical matters where 1 have had no experience,
in sprains, bruises, inflammations, eruptions, whit
lows, piles, Asc., it is iny universal recipe. I have
also used it on the leg of a boy which had been
bitten by an adder, and the extraction of the poison,
and ultimate cure was so rapid, that my patient was
as well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to
this day

The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a
highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No.
Ca.,March 3d, 1838:
Dr. Peters —Dear Sir, By requestor your agent,
Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the
almost miraculous effects of your piPs ; and I would
add, Liat you may make use ol them, in connection
with my name, in any manner you deem proper, I
speak of their merits from experience, as I and my
family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three
years ; and so great a*c the benefits w e have receiv
ed from them in general, that 1 would rather pur
chase them at ten dollars a box than have my house
without them. I will not enumerate the afflictions
: they have relieved us of ; but I can assure you they
were many’, and of very' opposite natures, which
j has fully proved to rnc that your medicine is a sim
ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally
the enemy of every disease. I will mention one
ca'-e. I have a sister who had been for a long pe
riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and
j was brought by it to the very verge of the grave.
; She was attended by the most eminent physicians
j that money could procure ; but all their efforts to
restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer
ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid
ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good
fortune, however, as she was in this
pectmg every day to be her last, your pills were
introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal
pable were their effects that three doses visibly re
lieved her, and in less than three months she was
perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all
who were witness of it, (butmore especially the
; suffering party.) considered to be the next thing to
miraculous; and yet I could mention many more
of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills
were equally successful in rescuing the* patients
from the jaws of death. Need I add that the popu-
I larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in
this section of the country ? But this 1 presume
you know from the immense quantity you dispose
of I may'mention, however, that notwithstanding
its general use, I never heard an individual complain
of its effects. My residence is I2miles from i.al
eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. 1 am, with sen
timents of regard, your ob’t servant.
A. G. BANKS.
To Dr. Peters, —Sir—For upwards of fifteen
months, I have been cruelly afflicted with Fever
and Ague; and during the time could find nothing —
though 1 had applied to every tiling that gave me
| any thing like permanent relief. At length, how
ever, your pills were recommended to me, hy one
of our best physicians, and 1 am most grateful and
happy in being able to add, that 1 had scarcely used
two boxes when I found that they' had restored me
j to perfect health. Since then, various members of
: my family have used them with equal success—
| and consequently I feel it my duty to apprise you
of the fact, and to request of you to publish this
certificate, as 1 am anxious to add my public testi
mony to the almost miraculous virtues of your im-
J rivalled medicine. .Respectfully yours,
