a, uetv and precious doctrine to the science of medi

Dy - rn an> of the faculty, (of which he is a valuable
member ) he proves to be as well founded in truth
as any doctrine of Holy Writ—a doctrine, upon the
verity of which are suspended the lives: of millions
of our race, and which 1m boldly challenges his op
nosevs to refute, viz: Consumption is a disease al

(or Life Principle) of the human body; QTf often
secretly lurking in the system for years before
there is the least complaint of the Lungs Jfj o—and
which may be as certainly, though not so quickly,
cured, as a common cold or a simple headache. An
invaluably precious doctrine this, as it imparts an
important lesson to the apparently healthy of both
sexes teachin ' them that this insidious foe may
be an unobserved inmate of their “ clayey houses”
even while they imagine themselves secure from
its attacks, teaching them that the great :,eci et in the

A Late ami Valuable Discovery.
PERHAPS mere is nothing mo* 0 calculated lo
disgust me public eye than the innumerable
advertisements ol nostrums that are constantly ap
pearing in the public prints. All are ready to ex
claim, our souls are stek, our ears are pained with
every day’s reports of tils and specifics. This state
of the public mind would seem to forbid any person
of delicate mind from sending forth any new 7 dis
coveries in medicine, lo the trial of the public.—
Still, molives of delicacy should not prevent us from
making know n real discoveries, which we are con
fident will benefit our fellow men. This latter
consideration has prompted rhe author of these bit
ters to make them known. He knows they are high
ly efficacious, fur he himself, his wife, and many
friends, have given them a thorough trial. He was
himsell a confirmed dyspeptic, so much, that even
his recollection was gone. By using these billers
he has been restored to health. Mrs. Cosby was
troubled for many years, but was restored to health
by the use of these bitters. This has been the case
with many of his frn nds. Mr. Cosby in sending
forth this advertisement, addresses those who know
him. Ho has been for many years a resident ol
Augusta at winch place he can at any lime bo
consulted about the bitters. They are good in all
cases of diseases of the digestive organs, the symp
toms of which are indigestion, pain or oppression
in the stomach from (ood, lossot appetite, flatulen
cy, heart t urn, giddiness in the head, pain in the
side, shortness of breath, lassitude, genet al weak
ness, distutbed sleep, &c The composition is en
tirely Botanical, anil has proved efficacious when
many celebrated medicines had failed. In support
of which he refers them to Freeman W. iMcy, she
riff ol Richmond countv, and William T. Thomp
son, editor ol the Augusta Mirror, and he might re
fer you lo many others, but deems it unnecessary
as he is w illing to place it on its own merits. All

Radical Cure ol Henna or Rupture, by Dr.
Chas>e , s Improved Surgeons 7 Trusses.
FMHE subscriber has opened an office, at the Drug
■ store of Messrs. J. J. Robertson &Co., for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now 7 used
them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid,
he could name several persons who have been radi
cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fair w 7 ay of being entirely re
lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee of the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearother
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
othei "apparatus known to the committee.”
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best know n means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
“ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object.”
Persons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this artlicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certilicate, from someresponsi'
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, ami applicable
to every variety of reducible rupture.

TO THE FACULTY’ AND HEADS OF

| |R. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
1 f TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked lor, some one in almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting t(.
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuiu
than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr, Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
profess to be, and will do for otlieis what they
have dune for such as raav have used them; as
.his is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
system in much better condition than the other
kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
how they their wished for a substitute. It has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
ascertaineJ that .ney contaiueu alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
tire preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is Were it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly _do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in

incomparable and invaluable remedy so
-I- long known, and used with such unparralleled
success in the Canadas for the last 30 yeats, ap
pears to need no panegyric. Its operation upon the
human system is such that it invariably acts like
a charm, for the relief and radical cure of a certain
common and disagreeable “ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
success hich has attended it through all of its
trying c cumstances, namely, “five days,”—the
same su cess which followed it in a Northern lati
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
or recipe was obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Cheveres, from the celebrated
Indian Chief Wabenothe, or Great Moon, whilst
he, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
siness in the North-west with the Indians. —
Wabeaoshe prized highly and use it with invariable
success throughout his two tribes. Its known and
valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the children of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt
at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the
Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com
position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although
free to use it in their respective tribes, which
places it in the hands of every Indian xvho rely
with, I may say, religious confidence on its cura
ble powers
Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can
be auglisized of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to
M. Ctieveret, when he purchased the original recipe,
and had twice assisted the Chief himself through
the tedious manipulatory process of manufacture.
Few 7 white men would credit the length of time
which is consumed in preparing the article for im
mediate use.

is to subdue every vestige of inflarnation, and then
acts mildly and copiously as a diuretic; thereby
holding within itself, every requisite virtue, fur
the subduction of this loathsome malady—and ev

assertion, thatcopious diuresis and reduction of in

a sound and radical cure
The most peculiar virtue of the “Cinq Jours,”
is in this, that wherever it alone has been used to

MOFFAT S VEGETABLE LIFE MEDICINES
fIAHESE medicines are indebted for their name
JL to lh« ir manifest and sensible action in puri

them with renewed tone and vigor. In many hun

were previously unacquainted with the beau'ihilly
philosophical principles upon which they are
corapounled, and upon which they ejiisequeniiy
act.
The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves
in diseases iof every form and description. Their
first operation is to loosen from the coals ol the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudities eon tantly settling around them ; ana to
remove the hardened faeces which collect
convolustoris of the smallest intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind as to produce habitu
al costiveness with til its train ofevils. or in a sud
den diarrhoea, with its eminent dangers. This fact
is well known to ail regular anatomists, who ex
amine the human bowels after death ; and hence
the prejudice of those well informed men against
quack medicines—or medicines prepared and her
laded lo the public bv ignorant pt rsons. 'J he se
cond effect of the Life Medicines is to cleanse tho
kidneys and the bladder, and by this means, the
liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which
entirely depends upon the regularity ol the urinary
organs. The blood, which lakes its red color from
the agency of the liver and the lungs before it
passes into the liea t, being thus purified by them
and nourished by food coming from a clean stom
ach, courses Ireely th.ough the veins, renews every
part of the system, and triumphantly mounts the
banner of health in the blooming cheek.
Moffat’s i Vegetable Life Medicines have been

to be particular in taking the Life Medicines strictly

under various names, and purporting to produce the

effect than that of swindling the public; and to
give a yet more plausible appearance of the r cu

Dr. Magntn made his wonderful discovery, no cure

to be of but little avail. Thus, all nostrums adver

Dr. Magnin’s, are mere catchpenny humbugs,

the appearance and great celebrity of the LUCINA

rjAHESjI Pills aro no longer among those of
X doubtful utility. They have passed away
from the hundreds that are daily launched upon
the tide of experiment, and now stand before the
public as high in reputation, and as extensively
employed in all parts of the United States, the Can
adas, Texas, Mexico, and the West Indies, as any
medicine that has ever been prepaied for th* relief
of suffering man. They have been introduced
w herever it was found possible to carry them ; and
there are but few towns that do not contain some
remarkable evidences of their good effects. The
certificates that have been presented to the proprie
tor exceed twenty thousand ! upwards of five hun
dred ot w hich are from regular practising physicians,
who are the most competent judgis of their merits.
Often have the cures performed by this medicine
been the subject of editorial comment in vaiious
newspapers and journals ; and it may with truth
be asserted, that no me heme of the kind has ever
received testimonials of gr< ater value than are at
tached to this.
They are in general use as a family medicine,
and there arc thousands of families who declare
they are never satisfied unless they have a supply
always on hand.
They have no rival in curing and preventing
Bilious levers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver
Complaints, Bick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma,
Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen,
Piles u Cholic, Female Obstructions, Heartburn, i ur
red Tongue Nausea, Distension of the stomach
and Bowels, Incipient Diarrhce, Flatulence, Habit
ual7 Co.'tivfness, Loss of Appetite, Blotched or
Sallow Coraulexun, and in all cases of Torpor of
the Bowels, where a cathartic or au aperient is
needed. They are exceedingly mild in their opera
tion, producing neither nausea, griping nor debility.
The efficacy ol these pills is so well known, and
their use so general, tliat further comment is con
sidered unnecessary.

HERMITAGE EXTRACT.—This lately in
vented combination of delightful odors, has
acquired a just popularity, not only by reason of
the strength and delicacy, but of the extraordina
ry duration of its perfume. Whilst the strength of
many other extracts and essences is almost as eva
; nescent as the bloom of the flowers from which
they are derived, the Hermitage retains its fra
grance for an indefinite length of time, and is
scarce to be removed from the garment on which it
is poureds, by washing; hence it is probably the
cheapest and* most delightful perfume of our labora
tories.
