as any doctrine of Holy Writ —adoct ne, upon the

secretly lurking in the system for years before
there is the least complaint of the Lu gs ,£lP—and
which may be as certainly, though m< ■ so quickly,

Wc nereby sta e, that when 1 i*. Louis Often i

the pretended discoverer of a new octrine and a
new medicine, we held him in tl i highest con

a base impostor ai d the prince ol qi mks. But, on
hearing so much said about the San iye, against it

COSBY’S DYSPEPTIC
BITTERS
A Lale and Valuable Discovery.
PERHAPS there IS nottuag mo - ’ cHc’iiated to
disgust the public eye than the innumerable
advertisements ot nostrums that are constantly ap
pearing in the public prints. AH are ready to ex
claim, our souls are sick, our ears are pained with
every day’s reports of ills and specifics. This state
of the public mind would seem to forbid any person
of delicate mind from sending forth any new dis
coveries in medicine, to the trial of tho public.—
Still, motives of delicacy should not prevent us from
making known real discoveries, which we are con
fident will benefit our fellow men. Tins laiter
consideration has prompted the author of these bit
lers to make them known. He knows they are high
ly efficacious, fur ho himself, his w ife, and many
friends, have given I hem a thorough trial. He was
himself a confirmed dyspeptic,so much, that even
his recollection was gone. By using these billers
he has been restored to health. Mrs. Cosby was
troubled for many years, but was restored to health
by ihe use of these bitters. This has been the case
with many of ins fri nds. Mr. Cosby in sending
forth this advertisement, addresscslho?c who know
him. He lias been for many years a resident ol
Augusta, at which [dace he can at any lime b?
consulted about the bitters. They arc good in all
cases of diseases of the digestive organs, the symp- ,
toms of which are indigestion, pain or oppression
in the stomach from food, loss el appetite, liatuien- !
cy, heart burn, giddiness in the head, pain in the I
side, shortness of breath, lassitude, general weak- j
ness, distu: bed sleep, Ac The coinpusi ion is en- |

many celebrated medicines had failed, in support;
of which he refers them to Freeman W. Lacy, she

Radical Cure of Hernia or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
ri 1 HE subscriber has opened an office, at the Drug
I store of Messrs. J. J. Robertson & Co., for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid,
he could name several poisons who have been radi
cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fairway of being entirely re
lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee ol the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ 'The instruments of i)r. Chase have effected
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearother
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.”
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
“ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly' the best
yet invented to effect the object.”
Persons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from some response
ble person, of their pecuniary'disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, and applicable
to every variety of reducible rupture.

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any' one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery' so long and anx
iously' looked for, some one in almost the extreme
North lias advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting to
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuiu
than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North*
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they' are all that they
profess to be, and will do fur othcis what they
have done for such as mav have used them ; as
Jiis is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow are just doubly' as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
system in much better condition than the other
kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
how they then wished for a substitute. It has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
aicertaine j that .aey cor.iameu alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is Were it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
pill, of which a supply, wc learn, will soon be in
his city. We all know something aoout this,
une ?
\\J E would call attention to the advertisement in
W our columns to-day, ol PETERS’ VEGE
TABLE PILLS. We understand by the best med
ical authority, that there is no preparation of the day
which enjoys so enviable a reputation. At the
South and North, their success ha o been unbounded,
and wherever introduced we believe they have
given the irosi perfect satisfaction. We have tins
day had an interview' with one ot our citizens, H.
K. F« x, who was recently cured ol a most remark
able and obstinate cutaneous eruption, where the
body was covered with fulsome ulcers, and even
llie lonsils ol the throat eaten away—aifti Dy using
these PILLS daily fur tix weeks, was entirely re
stored to health.— Neva 1 ork Examiner.
PETER*’ VEGETABLE PILLS.
They do indeed restore the health of ihe body,
because they purify and invigorate the blood, and
lheii good effects are nut counterbalanced by any
inconvenience ; being composed entirely ot vegeta
bles, they do not expose those who use them to
danger, and their effects are us certain as they are
salutary ; they are daily and safely administered to
infancy, youth, manhood and old age, and to wo
men iii the most critical and delica.e circumstances,
they do not disturb or shock the animal functions,
but restore their order and re establish their health;
nd for all the purposes which a vegsiabie purga
tive or certain cleanser ol the whole system are re
quirtd, they stand without a rival—they are allow
ed to be all that can be accomplished in medicine,
both lor power and innocence.

ANTI-BALSAMIC GONORRHOEAL SOLUTION,
Warranted to cure in Five Days.
r»’tHIS incomparable and invaluable remedy so
long known, and used with such unparralleled
success in the Canadas for the last 30 yeais, ap
pears to need no panegyric. Its operation upon the
human system is such that it invariably acts like
a charm, for the relief and radical cure of a certain
common and disagreeable‘-ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
success hich has attended it through al! of its
trying c cumstances, namely, “five days,”—the
same su cess which followed it in a Northern lati
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
or recipe was obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Cheveres, from the celebrated
Indian Chief Wabenothe, or Great Moon, whilst
he, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
siness in the North-west with the Indians. —
Wabenoshe prized highly and use it with invariable
success throughout his two tribes. Its known and
valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the children of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt
at enormous prices to ihe Chief of every tribe of!
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the j
j Great Spirit, never to divulge the “ait of its com
| position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although
j free to use it in their respective tribes, which
i places it in the hands of every Indian who rely
1 with, I may say, religious confidence on its cura
■ blc powers
I Below' is a copy of the translation as near as it can
j be anglisized of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to j
M. Cheveret, when he purchased the original recipe, i
j and had twice assisted the Chief himself through I
j tire tedious manipulatory process of manufacture.
: Few white men would credit the length of time j
i which is consumed in preparing the article for im- j
! mediate use.

This Medicine,! warrrnt by this publication,un
der a penalty of $5,000, not to contain one parti
cle of corrosive preparation. It is purely vegata
ble in its essences. Its first and prominent virtue
is to subdue every vestige of inflamation, and then
acts mildly and copiously as a diuretic ; therebj
holding within itself, every requisite virtue, for
the subduction of this loathsome malady—and ev
ery regular graduate in medicine, will sustain the
assertion, that copious diuresis and reduction of in
flation, are the only two things necessary to effect
a sound and radical euro
The most peculiar virtue of the “Cinq Jours,”
is in this, that wherever it alone has been used to
affect a cure, none of those tenacious and disagree -
able consequences which almost invariably results
from the sudden cure of Gonorrhoea, have been
known to obtain such as stricture, hernia, humor
alis, incontinence, and a swarm of other of the
most loathsome, perplexing, and disagreeable dis
eases, consequent upon erroneous diagnosis and
treatment of Gonorrhoea.
Those affected are requested to call and try for
themselves. If the prescriptions are well follow

returned.

THE LUCINA CORDIAL—BEWARE

rJtHE unprecedented popularity of this benefi-

under various names, and purporting to produce the
same effect; but which, in reality, produce no other
effect than that of swindling the public; and to
give a yet more plausible appearance of the r cu

trums have been in use in England and elsewhere
lor a number of years; whereas, until the illustrious
Dr. Magnin made his wonderful discovery, no cure
lor barrenness iiad been ever thougiit of, or at least
made public; and all those then in use for the
restoration of the decayed virile powers were found
to be of but little avail. Thus, all nostrums adver
tised for barrenness or the cure of irapoteney, but
Dr. Magnin’s, are mere catchpenny humbugs,
which would never have been thought of Dut lor
the appearance and great celebrity of the LUCINA
CORDIAL As no counterfeit of ihe name is at
present in circulation, it may in general be a suffi
cient caution for the purchaser to ask tor the Lucina
Cordial, but as furl her assurai.ee, it would be as
well to notet.iat its name, Lucina Cordial, or Elixir
of Love, is stamped in the glass of each bottle—the
combined arms of France and the United States
are on the outward envelope—that a Fieur de Lis
is printed on the accompanying directions, and
beautifully embossed on the show-bills hanging in
the stores ol those who have the genuine article

The celebrity of the Lucina Cordial being such
as it is, it is scarcely necessary to add that it is the
only efficient remedy for barrenness, and the resto

that in the cure of Fluor Albus, Gleet, obstructed,

MOFFAT S VEGETABLE LIFE MEDICINES
rtAHESF. medicines are indebted for their name
* to iht ir manifest and sensible action in puri
lying the spring and channels ot life, and enduing
them with renewed tone and vigor. In raanv hun
dred certified cases which has been made public,
and in almost ever}' species of disease to which
the human frame is liable, the happy effects of
MOFFAT’S LIFE PILLS AND PHENIX BI T
TERS have been gratefully and publicly ac
knowledged by the persons beneflitted, and who
wore previously unacquainted wi.h the beaudfully
philosophical principles upon which they are
compounded, and upon which they eonsequently
act.
The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves
in diseases ol every lorm and description. Their
fust operation is to loosen from the coals of the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudities eon-tantly settling around them ; and to
remove the hardened faeces which collect
convolusions of the smallest intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind as to produce habitu
al coslivcncss with nil its train ofevils. or in a sud
den diarrhoea, with its eminent dangers. This tact
is well known to ail regular anatomists, who ex
amine the human bowels after death ; and henac
the prejudice of those w ell informed men against
| quack medicines—or medicines prepared and her-
Jaded to the public hv ignorant pirsons. Ihe se
cond effect of the Life Medicines is to cleanse the
kidneys and tho bladder, and by this means, the
liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which
entirely depends upon the regularity oft he urinary
organs. The blocd, which takes its red color from
the agency of tho liver and the lungs before it
passes into Ihe hear, being thus purified by them
and nourished by food coming from a clean stom- \
ach, courses freely th.ough the veins, renews every |
part of the system, and triumphantly mounts the t
banner of health in the blooming cheek.
Moffat’s Vegetable Life Medicines have been j
thoroughly attested, and pronounced a sovereign I
remedy for Dyspepsia, Flatulency, Palpitation of |
the Heart, Loss of Appetite, Heart-bum and Head- !
ache, Restlessness, 111-temper, Anxiety, Languor I
and Melancholy, (Jostivencss, Diarrhoea, Cholera,

which afflict the humar frame. In fever and
ague, particularly, tho Life Medicines have been |
most eminently successful; so much so (hat in the
Fever and Ague districts, Physicians almost uni
versally prescribe them.
All that Mr. Moffat requires of his patient is
to be particular in taking the Life .Medicines strictly
according to the directions. It is not by a news
paper notice, or any thing that he himself may saj'
in their favor, that he hopes to gain credit. It is
alone by the result of a fair trial.

by removing the causes cures effectually and perma

families who have considered Sick Headache a con

It is the result of scientific research, and is entirely

HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS.
The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s
remedy for this distressing compaint is every day
gaining is certainly a matter of much astonishment,
That so much suffering should have existed for ages
without any discovery of an effectual preventive, or
cure, is truly a subject of much regret but Dr. S.
now assures the public that such a remedy has been
invented as will convince Ihe most credulous. 'The
principles on w hich it acts are simple and plain. It is
an a initled fact that this complaint, whether called
Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim

PETERS’ VEGETABLE PILLS.
fIHIES.3 Pills aro no longer among those ol
X doubtful utility. They have passed away
from tho hundreds that are daily launched upon
the tide of experiment, and now stand before the
public as high in reputation, and as extensively
employed in all parts of the United Slates, the Can
adas, Texas, Mexico, and the West Indies, as any
medicine that has ever been prepaied for the relief
of suffering roan. They have been introduced
wherever it was found possible to carry them; and
there are but few towns that do not contain some
remaikdble evidences of their good effects. The
certificates that have been presented to the proprie
tor exceed twenty thousand ! upwards of five hun
dred of w hich are from regular practising physicians,
who are the most competent judges of their merits.
Often have the cures performed by this medicine
been the subject of editorial comment in various
newspapers and journals ; and it may with truth
be asserted, that no me licine of the kind has ever
received testimonials of greater value than are at
tached to this.
They are in general use as a family medicine,
and there are thousands of families who declare
they are never satisfied unless they have a supply
always on hand.
They have no rival in curing and preventing
Bilious fevers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver
Complaints, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma,
Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen,
Files,.Cholic, Female Obstructions, Heartburn, Fur

Sallow Coraolexi jii, and in all cases of Torpor of
the Bowels, whete a cathartic or an aperient is
needed. They are exceedingly mild in their opera

The efficacy ol these pills is so well known, and
their use so general, that further comment is con

Hermitage extract.—This lately in
vented combination of delightful odors, has
acquired a just popularity, not only by reason ol
the strength and delicacy, but of the extraordina
ry duration of its perfume. Whilst the strength of
many other extracts and essences is almost as eva
nescent as the bloom of the flowers from which
they are derived, the Hermitage retains its fra
grance for an indefinite length of time, and is
scarce to be removed from the garment on which it
is poured, by washing; hence it is probably the
cheapest and most delightful perfume of our labora
