A Late and \ aluable Discovery.
PERHAPS tbere s nothing mor? c- lculaled to
disgust the public eye than the innumerable
advertisements of nostrums that are constantly ap
pearing inthe public prints. All are ready to ex
claim, our souls are sick, our ears are pained with
every day’s reports of ills and specifics. This state
oi the public mind would seem to forbid any person
of delicate mind from sending forth any new dis
coveries in medicine, to the trial of th-a public.—
Still, motives of delicacy should not prevent ns from
making known real discoveries, which we are con
fident will benefit our fellow men. Tins laiter
consideration has prompted the author of these bil
lers to make them known. He knows they are high
ly efficacious, for he himself, his wife, and many
friends, have given them a thorough trial. He was
himself a confirmed dyspeptic, so much, that even
his recollection was gone. By using these bitters
ho lias been restored to health. Mrs. Cosby was
troubled for many years, but w as restored to health
by ihe use of these bitters. This has been the case
with many of his frit nils. Mr. Cosby in sending
forth this advertisement, addresses those who know
him. Hu has been for many years a resident ol

Radical Cure oMlcriiia or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
rgXHE subscriber has opened an office, at the Drug
B store of Messrs. J. J. Robertson ikCo., forthe
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
uslly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly a year, and, didnot delicacy forbid,
he could name several persons who have been radi
cally cured, of tills truly' distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fairway of being entirely' re
lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee oi the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearother
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.”
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terras, tire in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The fol.owing is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
“ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to elfect the object.”
Persons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, wiio are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from someresponsi*
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, and applicable
to every variety of reducible rupture.

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. WILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty', or any one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting ic
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuiu
than for one to olfer meal from the corn stalk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
profess to be, and will do for others what they
have done for such as mav have used them ; as
Jiis is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow' are just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
system in much better condition than the other
I kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
how they then wished for a substitute. It has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late w'as it
ascertained that .ney coiiiaineu alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
1 the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
\ they know what it is Were it a patent mystery,
| they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
i day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
| Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in
| lus city. Wc all know something aoout mis.

\ \f E would call attention to the advertisement in
* tv our columns to-day, of PETERS’ VEGE
i TABLE PILLS. We understand by the best med
i u-al authority, that there is no preparation of the day
which enjuys to enviable a reputation. At the
b’oulh auu North, their success has been unbounded,
and wherever introduced we bel.cve they have
given the most perleut satisfaction. Wc have this
day had an interview with one ot our citizens, H.
K. F» x, who was recently cured ot a most remark
able and obstinate cutaneous eruption, where the
body was covered with luisonae ulcers, and even
• the tonsils ot the throat eaieti away—and by using
these PILLS daily lor six weeks, was entirely re
stored to health.— New lurk Examiner.
PETERS’ VEGETABLE PILLS.
They do indeed restore the health of the body,
because they purify and in\igorate the blood, and
theii good etiects are not counterbalanced by any
it,convenience ; being composed entirely ol vegeta
bles, they do m t expose those who use them to
danger, and their effects are as certain as they are
salutary; they ate daily and safely administered to
infancy, youth, manhood and old age, and to wo
men in the rnosl critical and delicate circumstances,
they do not nisturb or shock the animal functions,
hut restore their order and re-establish their health;
nd lor all the purposes w hich a vegetable purga
tive or certain cleanser oi the w hole system are re
quired, they stand without a rival—they are allow

incomparable and invaluable remedy so
-K long known, and used with such unparralleled
success in the Canadas for the last 30 years, ap
pears to need no panegyric. Its operation upon the
human system is such that it invariably acts like
a charm, for the relief and radical cure of a certain
common and disagreeable “ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
success high has attended it through all of its
trying c cumstances, namely, “five days,”—the
same su jess which followed it in a Northern lati
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
or recipe w'as obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Cheveres, from the celebrated
Indian Chief Wabenothe, or Great Moon, whilst
he, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
siness in the North-west w'ith the Indians. —
Wabenoshe prized highly and use it with invariable
success throughout his two tribes. Its known and
valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the children of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt
at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of
Indians in America, w'ith a solemn promise t© the
Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com
position until he sleeps witli his fathers,” although
i free to use it in their respective tribes, which
places it in the hands of every Indian who rely
with, I may say, religious confidence on its cura
ble powers
Below' is a copy of the translation as near as it can
i be anglisized of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to
M. Cheveret, when he purchased the original recipe,
and had twice assisted the Chief himself through
the tedious manipulatory process ©f manufacture.
Few white men would credit the length of time
which is consumed in preparing the article for im
mediate use.

MOFFAT S VEGETABLE LIFE MEDICINES
ffAHESE medicines are indebted for their name
A to tin ir manifest and sensible action in puri
lying the spring and channels ot life, and enduing
them with renewed tone and vigor. In manv hun
dred certified cases which has been made public,
and in almost every species of disease to which
the human frame is liable, the happy effects of
MOFFAT’S LIFE PILLS AND PHENIX HIT
TERS have been gratefully and publicly ac
knowledged by the persons bene'iitted, and who
were previously unacquainted with the beautifully
philosophical principles upon which they are
compounded, and upon which they Consequently
act.
The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves
in diseases ot every form and description. Their
first operation is to loosen from the coals of the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudities eomtanlly settling around them; and to
remove the hardened faeces which collect 1
convolusions of the smallest intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind as to produce habitu
al costiveness uhli oil its train ofevils. or in a sud
den diarrhoea, with its eminent dangers. This tact
is well known to all regular anatomists, who ex
amine the human bowels after death; and heiue
the prejudice ol those well informed men against
quack medicines—or medicines prepared and her
laded to the public bv ignorant pt rsons. r I he se
cond effect of the Idle Medicines is to cleanse Ihe
kidneys and the bladder, and by this means, the
liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which
entirely depends upon tho regularity of the urinary
organs. 'I he blood, w hich lakes its red color trom
the agency ol the liver and the lungs before it
passes into the hear, being thus purified by them
and nourished by food coming from a clean stom
ach, courses treely through the veins, renews every
part of the system, and triumphantly mounts the
banner of health in the blooming cheek.
Moffat’s Vegetable Life Medicines have been
thoroughly attested, and pronounced a sovereign
remedy lor * lyspepsia. Flatulency, Palpitation ot
the Heart, Loss Os Appetite, Heart-burs and Head

which afflict the huniar frame. In fever anil
agsie. particularly, the Life Medicines have been
most eminently successful; so much so that in the
Fever and Ague districts, Physicians almost uni
versally prescribe them.
All that Mr. Moffat requires of his patient is
to be particular in taking the Life Medicines strictly
according to the directions. It is not by a news
paper notice, orany ihir-g that he himself may say
in their lavor, that he hopes to gain credit. It is
alone by the result of a fair trial.

PETERS’ VEGETABLE PILLS.
rg'tHESE Pills arc no longer among those ol
A doubtful utility. They have passed away
from the hundreds that are daily launched upon
the tide of experiment, and now stand before the
public as high in reputation, and as extensively
employed in all parts of the United States, the Can
adas, Texas, Mexico, and the West Indies, as any
medicine that has ever been prepa.ed for the relief
of suffering roan. They have been introduced
w hcrever it was found possible to carry them ; and
there are but few towns that do not contain some
remuikable evidences of their good effects. The
certificates that have been presented to the proprie
tor exceed twenty thousand ! upwards of five hun
dred ol w hich are from regular practising physicians,
who are the most competent judges of their merits.
Often have the cures performed by this medicine
been the subject of editorial comment in various
newspapers and journals ; and it may with truth
be asserted, that no me heine of the kind has ever
received testimonials of gnater value than are at
tached to this.
They are in general use as a family medicine,
and there arc thousands of families who declare
they are never satisfied unless they have a supply
always on hand.
They have 110 rival in curing and preventing
Bilious levers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver
Complaints, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma,
Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen,

Sallow Complexun, and m all cases of Torpor of
the Bowels, where a cathartic or an aperient is

HERMITAGE EXTRACT.—This lately in
