An Ordinance, imposing a Tax on sales at Pub
lic Ait -tion.
Be it ordained by the (fity Council of Avgusta,
and it is hereby oraainefy by the authority of the
ime, That theie shall tie a tax of two per cent,
imposed on the amount cfa sales hereafter made at
public auction, within tin? corporate limits of the
City of Augusta, excepti on real estate, negroes,
end shares of the capital! lock of banking,or other
joint stock companies, tire tax on svhicn shall be
one half of one per cent*; but no tax*shall be le
vied on sales made by vi ue of legal process, or bv
executors, administrator}, or guardians.

of this Ordinance, the Iffice of Street Officer be

“There shall be annually appointed eight good
and efficient men, who sb:Ul be known and denom
inated the City Watch. The said City Watch shall
be mustered at the Guard room at B’ciock on every
evening, and shall be jr|:ler the control and direc
tion of the City Marshaij whose duty it shall be to
detail for patrol duty foujv; he shall prescribe their
' route and direct the tinier of service, when they
shall be relieved by the H-piaining four. Each indi
vidual of said City Watcti shall be paid onedol.ar
per night for each and night of service ren
dered, from and after tlr; ; Ist Saturday in January

A» Ordinance to levy h Tax on Equestrian Ex
hibitions, and foj; j other purposes.
Be it ordained by the fiity Council of Augusta,
and it is hereby ordained* by the authority of the
same. That from and aft-?'? the passage of this Or
dinate, there shall be a (tax levied on ail eques
trian exhibitions for pay, at the Circus or else
where, in the City of Augusta, of ten dollars for
eveiy time such exhibition shall be presented, if
between sunrise and subset; such exhibi
tion take place after the tax on the same
shall be twenty dollars iff every time of perform
ance, to be collected daily by the City Marshal.
Sec 2. And be it fui thejr ordained l»y the author
ity afore said. That if thj; aforesaid tax shall not
be paid to the City Marshal on demand, execution
shall issue forthwith against the property of the
person or persons liable f(|r the same.
Sec 3. And be it furlhfrordained by the author
ity aforesaid, That all ordinances and parts of ordi
nances militating against; l;his ordinance, be, and the
same are hereby epealeiii

on commission or at private sale, not returned
at the usual period, fcii.
Be it ordained by the t’ity Council of Augusta,
and it is hereby ordaimd by the authority of the
tame, That fiom and aster the first ot January
next, there shall be a ta:| :of one eighth of one p; r
cent, on all taxable merchandise sold on commis
*ion at private sale in tlici City of Augusta, which
may not have been retained for taxation at the
usual period; and that ijishall be the duty of ail
persons who may have si ;d any such goods on com
mission, to embrace all such sales in his or her next
tax returns, and to pad the tax hereby imposed
thereon at the period of laying his or her tax there
after. j
Sec. 2. And be it farther ordained by the au
thority aforesaid. That *ijf any peson or persons

Almighty God for again blessing our city with its
accustomed goon health, and do also earnestly re
commend all citizen* to suspend their usual busi
ness and assemble in their icspective places of
worship, to render unto Him their united tribute ol
thanks for this great blessing, and to supplicate a
continuance of Divine favor for cur City and

furnishing United States Troops, stationed at Au
gusta Arsenal, with 120 cords good Oak Wood,
upland growth. 'The cord to measure 128 cubic
feet, and to consist of straight round sticks, cut in
| lengths of 4 feet, and to be not
1 diameter, nor to exceed 10. Sticks of larger size
than 10 inches, if reduced to proper dimensions by
splitting, will be admissible, but no cord shall be
composed of more than one half split wood.

lar bill—ihe one for 5 on the Bank of Hamburgh,
the others not racollected ; in all about forty-three
dollars. It also contained the following notes :
One on Benjamin Pine for two hundred and seventy
nine dollars and forty-eight cents; one on C.C. Tal
iaferro for eightr-six dollars and fifty cents, dated
14th December, 1840; one on C. Salm for fifty-six
dollars and forty cents; one on Dennis Josephs for
fifty dollars—the above named persons reside in
Augusta; one on William taihoun, of Georgia, fur
ninety-five dollars; two on J. J. Fester, of South
Carolina, one for about fifty and the other for fiftj- 1
eiiht dollars, with a credit of forty-four dollars on c
it; one on Mr. Teag, of the same State, amou t
not recollected; one on Sibley k Cook, of Ham
burg, amount rot recollected; the receipt of Jobn
M. Cooper & Son for a note on William C. Wiley,
of Cass county, Georgia, for four hundred and
twenty six dollars; Thomas Cbatin’s two receipts,
one lor a note of seventy five dollars on Hezekiah
Ellington, of Georgia, and the other for a note on *
