place Inst night in the presence of a very large
audience, at the Lyceum Hall. The mummy was
unrolled. After some explanatory remai ks hy the
lecturer, in which ho stated to his auditors that the
mummy' beforu them had never been unrolled,
and that lie knew nothing of its history, age or
sex. more than did the audience, it having been
received by him precisely in the state in which
they then saw it, the mummy was placed in an el
evated position, so as to he clearly visible to the
audience.,, and the process of unswatl ing com
menced, under the immediate supervision of tho
medical *nmm of New Orleans, the faculty' of tho
Medical Department of the University ot Louisi
ana.
The unswathing was performed principally by
Drs. Jones, Weudcrhurn and Chilton, and occu- J
pied some half or three quarters of an hour. As "
swathiner after swathing was removed, and the
roll which at first appeared to boos so rcsnectabl*
a size, began to grow smaller and smaliCT and
beautifully Jess, the audience evidently began to
get apprehensive lest the mummy was about to ho
dissipated into consecutive layers of cloth. At
length, however, after removing linen enough to
have served tho whole household of an ancient
Egyptian dame, during a life-time, the savans came
to the body of a female, in what was pronounced a
“beautiful” state of preservation. The hair, nails,’
«fcc., were as distinct and well preserved as though
the spirit had loft its earthly tenement but yester
day. From the symmetrical proportions of her
well turned limbs, wo did not hesitate to conclude
that the body' lying before us, when animated hy
it« spiritual habitant, bad been a distinguished
hello of ancient Egypt—had one day moved about
among her peers in the full pride and satisfaction
of conscious beauty—had boon the object of man*
an envious glance from her own sex, and of atior
atory looks, ill-suppressed sighs, and badly com
posed sonnets innumerable, of a countless throng
of admirers from the opposite sex. Perhaps she
may'have intrigued with Pharaoh himself, or she
may have been the veritable Mrs. Potipftar who
so sorely tried the continence of Joseph.
Those who are curious about her history must 4
attend the next lecture, when Mr. Giiddon has
promised to divulge all the secrets which an exam
ination of the various swathing, and of any in
scription to be found thereon, may disclose. In
the meantime we are to rest contented with the
fact, that tho method of embalming used in her
case fixes the period in which she flourished
somewhere between 1500 R. <’. and (he second or
third century after Christ.
