Loss of the San Francisco.
Charleston, Jan. 18.—The Northern mail ofthis
morning, brings full particulars of the loss of the
Steamer San Francisco, for whose safety so much
anxiety has been felt for several days past. She
foundered at sea on the 4th inst., and 240 passen
gers were drowned. Colonel Washington, Maj,
Taylor, and wife, Capt. Field and Lieut. Smith, are
lost, also two ladios, throe children and one hun
dred and fifty U. S. troops. Major Wise, and
1/eut. Winder have arrived at New York—others
were on board the brig Kelly for Boston. Lieuts.
Winder and Chandler arc on board the ship An
tarctic for Liverpool.
The Han Francisco—Further Particulars.
Baltimore, Jan. 14.—The Lucy Thompson has
arrived at New York with 130 of the passengers
ol the ill-fatod San Francisco, taken from on board
the Antarctic. The Herald publishes nine columns
ol the details of the accident to the San Francisco.
It is believed that 300 lives have been lost. The
barque Kelly, with 100 survivor, probably, put
into Bermuda. Many died besides those who
wore washed overboard. The vessel had leaked
badly since the 25th December, ancl was withdifii.

New York, Jan. 12.—The steamer Baltic has
arrived, bringing Liverpool dates of Dec. 20th, and
84 passengers. The Europa arrived out on the
26th.
There was little news on account of the Christ
mas Holy days. The difficulty in the British Cabi
net had been patched up, and Lord Palmerston
retains his office.
It is rumored, but disbelieved strongly, that
the Porte will consent to resume negotiations.
The London Times lias the following despatch
dated Vienna, Wednesday evening:
“ The Russian steamer Truth has set two Turk
ish villages on fire by throwing red hot balls.”
Constantinople, Dec. 19th.— Negotiations on
tho peace project has been resumed and the Porte
manifests a pacific disposition. The allied fleets
are still at Bey cos.
Berlin, Doe. 24th.—Negotiations arc pending
between Sweden and Denmark, having for their
object the conclusion of u league, offensive and de
fensive between tho two States.
Paris, Dec. 23th. — -Tho three per cents.closed at
74 francs, four and halves 101 fr.
St. Petersburg.—The only indications of an
ticipated war are a rise in the prices of some ar
ticles.
A violent tempest had occurred in tho Black
Sea, and 80 merchant vessels had been lost.
Tiio whole Russian fleet had left Sinope, after
staying two days to repair.
It was reported that Cnpadan Pasha had been
dismissed for neglecting his duties at Sinope.
YVar had been officially declared by Prussia
against Russia.
The rumored return of Lord Palmerston to office
had caused a fall in the French funds.

Washington, Jan. 9.—Tho Democratic Festival
in honor of Iho Battle of N. Orleans took place this
evening. About 150 sat down, including several
members of Congress. William Selden, Esq., pre
sided, assisted by sixteen Vico Preoidents. As
preliminary to the Festival the President read a
series of resolutions declaratory of Democratic
principles, endorsing the administration of Presi
dent Pierce, which wore adopted with acclimation.
After supper the President announced the regu
lar toasts, which were drank with enthusiasm—
those to the memory of General Jackson, and to
the honor of the President and Capt. Ingraham
wore received with great favor.
Boston, Jan. 9.—Eighteen out of the nineteen
vacancies in the Senate were filled to day by the
election of tho Whig candidates,so that the Senate
now stands 29 whigs, 8 coalition and 1 democrat.
A Governor and Lieut. Governor will be elected
by the Legislature to-morrow.
Tho City election to day resulted in tho choico
of Dr. Smith, Native American Whig, as Mayor.
Later. — Boston, Jan. 11.—Tio Senate to-day
concurred in the election of Washburn for Gover
nor, and Plunkett for Lieut. Governor.
Washington, Jan. 10. —tho remains of Mr. Muh -
lenberg were taken this afternoon to Reading in

ward avenue occupied by Aubery & Co., Arm -
strong, Davis, Smith, Lewis & Filler, was burnt
this morning. Insurance $15,000. Dr. Duffield’s
Presbyterian Church, on Learned st., was also
burnt on which there was S4OOO insurance. Total
loss $25,000.
Boston, Jan. 10. —The Schr. Rockingham from
Wilmington, was burnt in tho harbor last night.
She was sunk and her cargo of Rosin destroyed..
The Brig Athens from New York for Liverpool
went ashore on Nantucket shoals, on the 6th.
Norfolk, Jan. 10.—The ship Alban from Bris
tol for Norfolk, went ashore in 11 Let oi water,
near Cape Henry in tho snow storm of last Satur
day night.
The schr. Shannon, from Boston for Richmond,
put in yesterday with loss of Jibboom, Sails, ike.
New* Y t ouk, Jan. 10. -The steamer Union lias
sailed in search of tho San Francisco. Capt. Hud
son and 3 officers of the Navy volunteered.
Louisville, Jan. 9.—Eight warehouses, situated
on Water street, between Fifth and Bullitt, and on
Fifth street, between Main and Water, were burnt
late on Saturday night. The loss is estimated at
$50,000.
Boston, Jau. 10.—The brig Boston, at Salem
from Cayenne, reports, December 26, lat. -42 80,
ion. 69 passed the wrech of a hermaphrodite brig,

Boston, Jan. 10.—The Legislative of Massachu
setts to-day elected Mr. Washburn, whig Govern
or of Massachusetts, and Mr. Plunkett, Lieuten
ant Governor. The message of the Governor will
be handed into morrow.
Louisville, Jan. 9.—The number of Hogs slaugh*
tered here up to this date is 400,000.
Boston, Jan. 10.-—Tho U. S. Sloop Decatur is
ready for sea and will sail in tho morning in search
of the San Francisco.
Reding, Jan. 9. — A serious lire broke out here
about Bo’clock last evening, which destroyed the
depot, machine and boiler shops. Nino.loeomotives
were partially injured, but they can be redily re
paired at tho Company’s works at Palo Alto and
Richmond.
Tho shops for repairing coals, freight, and pass
engercars, the blacksmith shops, foundry and trip
hammer, &c., sustained no injury.
A large portion of the stationary' machinery is
almost entirely uninjured, andcau be started again
this wesk ! also the large stationary engine and
boilers.
The fire the will not in least interrupt the regu
lar business of tho company.
[The Depot is not injured at all. The machine
and boiler shops were the only buildings destroy
ed.]
New York, Jan. 9.—The Steamers George Law
from Aspinwall, and Star of the West from San
Juan, arrived to day, tho latter bringing 450 pass
engers and $1,300,000 in gold, and the former 250
passengers and $540,000 in gold.
Cincinnati, Jan. 10.—Receipts of hogs at this
market up to date 762,000, egainst 355,000 receiv-
'fkole of last year. Sales to-day of
4,500 hogs, at $4,25 a54,50. Provisions are dull
and heavy.
Chicago, Jan. 10.—The Governor issued a proc •
lauiation yosterday, convening the general Assem
bly for Thursday, the 9th of February. The subject
to be submittep are, the districting of the State into
Senatorial and Lepresntative districts; to prevent
Eastern manufacturers and jobbers from selling
their stocks by sample; to authorize counties to
borrow money and issue bonds for the erection of
public buildings ; to pas a law consolidating Rail
rL ads in tho State with those in other S'ates, and
to make mutual interests of the same, and other
matter of local interest.
Highly Important from Mexico-—The Treaty
Concluded.
New Orleans, Jan. 12.—Tho steamship Texas
has arrived from Vera Cruz, bringing advices from
the city of Mexico to the 12th inst. Among her
passengers arc Gen. Gadsden, U. S. Minister at
Mexico, Colonel Ramsay, the two Messrs. Ilargous,
and Senor Atoehe.
General Gadsden, who lell New Orleans this,
Thursday, evening, en route for Washington, has
brought with him a highly important Treaty
which ho had concluded with Mexico, in which all
issues have been arranged to the honor and satis
faction of >o‘h Governments. The principal fea
ture in it is that Mexico grunts to tho United States
thirty-nine million acres in the Mesilla Valley,
receiving in payment therefor, $20,000,000, and for
all claims, including the Garay grant, Indemnities,
and private claims only $5,000,000.
The Mexican papers notice the treaty favorably,
and state that it has been received wi li iov by the
public.
It is understood that Sloo’s Company will pay
the Teuantepec Company $2,00 ,00u for ielinquish
ishing their claims.
Gemhardina is dead, and Gen. Almonte, the
present Minister at Washington, has been appoint
ed his successor. Gen. A (costs, Minister of War,
has resigned, but no successor has as yet been
appointed.
There has been nothing later from California re
ceived by the Texas, with tho exception that
Walker’s expedition had been destroyed and the
Caroline captured.
New Orleans, Jan. 12,1 I*. M. — Up to noon on
Thursday, in Now Orleans, Cotton was more ac
tive, and 3000 bales had changed bauds. Mid
dling was worth from 9X'to 9% cents per lb.—
During the previous three days only 9000 bales had
been sold, at easier prices.
New Orleans, January 12, 7.10 P. M.—The
entire sales of Cotton on Thursday, were 6000
bales at irregular prices, operators being disap
pointed at not having received tbe Baltic's advi
ces. Prime Molasses was worth 18 cents per gal
lon. Five thousand ban els of Flour found pur
chasers at $6.80 for Ohio. The decrease in the
receipts of Colton at all the ports is 560,000 bales,
New Orleans, Jan. 13.—0 n Friday, 6,000 bales
of Cotton wero disposed of. No quotable change
had occurred in prices. The sales of the week
were 27,000 bales. Middling was worth 9% a
cents per lb. The Baltic’s advices had not arriveef.
The decrease in the receipts at all tho ports, up to
the latest dates, as compared with last year, is 262,-
000 bales. W liisky commanded 25, and Prime
Molasses IS cents per gallon.

AUGUSTA CANAL.
AT a meeting of the Board of Managers of the Augusta
Canal Company, held on the 27th of December, 1553,
the following resolution was passed :
Resolve d, That an assessment of Twenty-five Ter Cent
belaid upon the Stockholders of the Augusta Canal Com
pany, and that due notice thereof be given in the city
papers.
In conformity to the above resolution, notice is hereby
given that an assessment of Twenty-Five Per Cent has
been laid upon the Stockholders of the Augusta Canal
Company, and that the same is required to be paid to the
City Collector and Treasurer, on or be'ore the 16th day of
January, A. D., 1851. A list of Stockholders, showing the
amount paid in by each, and the assessment thereon, can
be seen at the office of said Collector and Treasurei.
