The Steamer San Francisco Found at Sea.
We received last evening the annexed despatch
es announcing an appalling disaster to the steam
ship San Francisco, accompanied with the loss of
about two hundred and forty of her unlortunate
passengers, including Col. Taylor and his wife, and
several officers of the army.
The San Francisco had on board some five hun
dred and fourteen officers and enlisted men, in all,
with about two hundred women and children; and
others indirectly connected with the service. She
was a new staunch built vessel, and was destined
for San Francisco, via the Straits of Magellan,
touching at Rio Janeiro, Valparaiso and Acapulco.
She had on board Companies A, B, ]>, G, H, I, K,
aud L of the Third regiment of the United States
Artillery. These companies with the non-commis
sioned staff and band of the regiment, constituted
a force of about five hundred men. We however
annex the despatches without further comment :
New York, Jan. 13—The bark Three Bells ar
rived here this afternoon bringing the astounding
news of the Steamship San Francisco having foun
dered at sea, and that two hundred and lorty of
those on board have perished.
The Three Bells brings two hundred and thirty
of those on board the steamer. The bark Kilby of
Boston has also some of the saved, and others are
on board the Antarctic bound to Liverpool. The
Captain and crew were saved.

all the ladies except the unfortunate Mrs. Taylor,
are on board the brig Kilby bound to Boston.
Lieut. C. S. Winder and Lieut. Chandler are on
board the ship Antarctic bound to Liverpool. All
the troops were divided amongst the threo vessels.
■The 240 who were lest, were washed overboard on
ihe night of Dec. 24th.
Fourth Despatch. —All the spars and sails of the
steamer were blown away in the gale on tho 24th.
At 1, A. M., on the 25th, tho engine stopped, the
piston rod b eaking off, leaving the vessel totally
unmanageable, the sea striking her treu endous
blows under the guards, tearing up the planking
fore and aft on both sides. At the same time the
vessel began to make water, when the troops were
organised into bailing gangs.
€3At 9 o’clock on the 25th, the sea struck her
amidships carrying away both the smoko stacks,
all the upper saloon, staving the quarter deck

Boston, Jan. 12, 1854.—Governor Washburn
was inaugurated to-day, and delivered his message,
which is almost exclusively local iu character. Ho
alludos to the fisheries aud expresses tho hope that
Congress will protect them ; congratulates the
people on the tiourishingcondition of every branch
of commerce, &o. The finances of the State are in
a favorable condition, but increased expenses call
lor a loan of $200,000 to make up a deficient in tho
year 1858. On the Liquor law the message says:
“That society has a right to protect itself from any
vice that tends to undermine its foundation, is a
maxim which few would controvert; nor would it
be more seriously contested, that, if necessary for
this purpose, laws may be aimed at tho cause of an
acknowledged evil, instead of dealing with its ef
fects alone.”
Dunkirk, Jan. 11.—Tho train from Erie has just
arrived, and passengers announce the termination
of the railroad war at that place.
Meetings have been held to day at Erie and
Harbor Creek, and resolution were passed to otter
no further opposition to tho company in prosecu
ting tho repairs of tho road.
'ihe superintendent says that two or threo days
will suffice to make the road passable.
Tho mob, seeing that the law was about to be
enforced, thought it best to acquiesce, though the
excitement has been more intense to-day than
ever; they were divided among themselves, how
ever. and to that is owing the favorable turn mat
ters have taken.
Washington, Jan. 12.—1 have just had a conver
sation with Mr. Stanley, the artist, attached to
Gov. Stevens’surveying party, Ho returned only
a day or two ago, aud gives a glorious description
of the country and his numerous adventures. Os
the five passes through the mountains, Gov. Ste
vens thinks that the best route passes through
tho Garden Lake county. The other routes
through tho desert are difficult and highly objec
tionable.

Correspondence of the Commercial Advertiser .
Foreign Markets.
HAVRE, Dec. 26. —There has been a very dull market
for Cotton last week; the total sales were only 2100 bales
against2ooo Import, leaving our stock 81,000 against 16,
500 last year, and 29,000 in 1851. But although the de
mand has been restricted to small lo s for home use, hold
ers nevertheless m .intained their pretensions, and our quo
tations remained the same.
On Saturday, the transactions were confined to 400 bales.
To-day, Monday, the same state of things continues, and
the sales do not exceed 500 bales, without any apparent
change in piices.
About 80,000 bfcls. Flour changed hands last week at 49f.
(§)49f.50, chiefly on delivery. The market, however, closed
dull on Saturday, and to-day there has been a slack de
mand at 49f. only bbls.
Wheat is scarce, and American is quoted at SBf.@9lf. fl
sack of 200 kils.
The Rhine sailed for New York yesterday.
LIVERPOOL, Dec. 28.—The Canada from Liverpool,
afternoon of Saturday, 24th, having taken out the report of
that day’s market, and Monday, 26th, having been observ
ed as a close holiday, we have, in reality, but one day’s
business to report and that without any change in tone or
prices. Sales, Tuesday, 27th, 6000 bales, including 1000
speculation, and market closing steady and quite as dear.
Quotations are repeated. For FairOrleans 6.%d., Middling
6d.; Fair Mobiles 6)£d., Middling 5%d.; Fair Uplands 6%d.,
Middling 6Jjd.; Ordinary 4%@5.J£d.; Inferior 2%d@4d.
Os the above 6000 bales 250 were Egyptian at 6@S; 800
Surats 2 1 4@4)£d., end 40Sea Islands 15d.@2a. 7d. for ex
port.
Dec. 28.—The market is very firm with a good erquiry
for home consumption. Sales 3000 bales, of which 1000
were for speculation and export.
Dec. 29.—The market is moderately active for home
consumption. The sales yesterday and to-day foot up
about 13,000 bales at very full prices; the present inquiry
being for qualities worths.?ud., of which there is a smal>
supply of good stapled. There are but few transactions by
speculators or exporters.
LIVERPOOL, Dec. 27.—We have no change to notice in
the price of Cotton, the daily saltsaveraging 6000 bales,
with 1200 to exporters and speculators, and the market
closing steadily.
