FREE TRADE AND NO MONOPOLY
Opposition to High Froigh Tariffs!
Office of the Fashion Link. 1
Augusta, April 15, 1864. j
THK subscriber would respectfully call the attention f
the Merchants throughout Georgia, Tennessee, Ala
bama and South Carolina, to the Savannah River, as a
safe, expeditious and cheap route for the transportationof
their Merchandise.
By comparing the freight tariffs of this line with thoseof
the fouth Carolina, and Central, and Waynesboro’ Rail
roads, it will show a result in favor of this route of from 80
to 60 per cent., generally, and in some instances a greater
per centage.
By this route a merchant receives each shipment of his
Goods together; they are not retailed to him as they gen
erally are by Railroads connecting with the seaboard, with
a list of charges attached to each package.
in addition to the present force of this line, another new
Boat, of light draught of water, will be aided during the
coming summer. These boats will leave Savannah after
the uischarge of the New York and Philadelphia Steam
ships, twice or three times a week, delivering those Goods
at this point in FIVE DAYS.
From the present low tariff of this line a deduction of
12)4 percent, wi 1 be allowed on t.ll bitls from this date.
Give the river more business, and a cheaper freight yet
awaits you.
All goods from the seaboard should be directed to
M. A. COHEN, Savannah,
and produce from the interior to
JNO. A. MOORE, Augusta.
To the manufacturing portion of Georgia, weil as the
Cotton Merchants, and dt-alers generally, on the line of
Railroads through Georgia and Tennessee, who ship to
Savannah and Northern markets, this route offers very
favorable inducements.
To facilitate shipments, as well as to prevent errors, bills
of landing should be forwarded to .'J. A. Cohen, at Savan
nah, for all goods fromseabord. JNO. A MOUKE.
Incase of low river, all goods consigned to this line, will
be forwarded by Central, and connecting Railroads. apl6

SIOOO will be paid, if reliable evidence is shown, where
they ever failed to protect valuables from fire, whereas
other makers’Safes have proved utterly worthless in va
rious accidental and experimental tests, some of which
have occurred recently. Read the following from Messrs.
A. McClure ACv., wholesale and retail dealers in Drugs,
Medicines,Ac.: „ ,
Albany, July 27,1852.
This is to certify, thaton the 23d of July, 1852, our en
tire stock, composed of Turpentine, Alcohol, Oil, Paints,
Medicines, Ac., was consumed by fire ; so rapid and severe
was the fire, that we were unable to close our Safe, until
Mr. Pohlmau subsequentlv entered at theperil of his life,
and closed the doors. On forcing the safe open, after all
this exposure to the fire, which made us fearful for the
safety of its contents, its valuables were found uninjured I
We have so much confidence iu the security or the Fire-
King, that we shall immediately replace it by another.

in which was stored a large quantity of whiskey and other

Ibe bnai Storm.
The hurricane has ceased its ravages and the
waters have subsided. In the multiplicity of du
ties devolving upon us, we Had it impractical to
make up a detailed statement of the destruction
that meets the eye on every hand, in pasting
through our city. So far as w 8 are able to lear j
no l.ves have been lost, though many persons were
brought into imminent peril. Oar tears for the
shipping and for the safety of human lite a’oDg the
coast, are increased rather than allayed. Hutchin
son's l-riand is again above water, and to our sur
prise we see cattle grazing there as usuid. How
thoy could have escape drowning is a.most a mir
acle.
The damage sustained through the city seems to
be general and wi ie spread. Tin roofs have been
striped from almost every bubdinjr, public and
private, in exposed situation. Arnorg the most
prominent ot which we have noticed is that of the
Exchange, St. Johns church, Cathalic and Metho
dist churches, and a partial injury to the sla e roof
ot t he Independent .Presbyterian ohuich.
i ho loss to privato dwellings iD damage to roofs,
windows, trees, fences, &c., cannot be detailed.—
Many of our steets are impassable from the fallen
trees. So much injury has been sustained at the
Uas Works as to deprive the city of gas. The sev
eral boat yards are heaty loosers of timber and
other building material. Fig Island light house

moral point of view there is great reason for thank
fulness to the Ruler ot the storm that, so far as we
know, human lite has been spared, and the loss
