FREE TRADE AND NO t DUOPOLY
Opposition to High Freigh Tariffs!
Office or the Fashion Like. 1 |
Augusta, April 15, 1854. j
Till, subscriber would respectfully call the attention f j
the Merehaots throughout Georgia, Tennessee, Ala- j
bam a and South Carolina, to the Savannah River, as a
safe, expeditious and cheap route for the transportation:}! j
their Merchandise.
By comparing the freight tariffs of this line with tho- eof ;
the Bouth Carolina, aud Central, and Waynesboro’ Rail
roads, it will show a result in favor of this route of from 80 j
to 5u per cent.,gensrahy, and in some instances a greater |
per centage.
By this route a merchant receives each shipment of his j
Goods together; they are not retailed to him as they gen- j
erallj are by Railroads connecting wi'h the seaboard, with j
a list of charges attached to each package.
In addition to the present force of this line, another new ;
Boat, of light draught of water, will be aided during the j
coming bummer, these boats will leave Savannah after 1
the oischarge of the New York and Philadelphia St-am- j
ships, twice or thr- e times a week, delivering those Goods j
at this point in FIVE DAYS.
Fttm the present low tariff of this line a deduction of j

M- B. DAVIDSON'S FIRE-KING SAFES:
F'lliK-PItOOF AND FREE FROM DAMPNESS S !,
E. CORNING AGO., Agents, Albany, N. Y.—This
, Safe received the highest pr-emium, a Silver Medal, at the
Fair of the New-York State Agricultural Society, held at
c Albany, iB6O. Also, a Medal and Diploma for the in-t
; Burglar and Fire-Proof Safe exhibited at the State Fa.
held at Utica. Sept. 1852.
THE FIRE-KING SAFES AGAIN TRIUMPHANT!
SIOOO will be paid, if reliable evidence is shown, where
they ever failed to protect valuables from fire, whereas
other makers’Safes have proved utterly worthless in va
rious accidental and experimental tests, some of which
have occurred recently. Read the following from Messrs.
A. McClure AO«., wholesale and retail dealers in Drugs,
Medicines,Ac.: , , „ „„„„
Albany, July 27,1852.
This is to certify, that on the 23d of July, 1852, our en
tire stock, composed of Turpentine, Alcohol, Oil, Paints,
Medicines, Ac., was consumed by fire; so rapid and severe
was the fire, that we were unable to close our Safe, until
Mr. Pohlmaii subsequently entered at the peril of his life, ,
and closed the doors. On forcing the safe open, after all
this exposure to the fire, which made us fearful for the
safety of its contents, its valuables were found uninjured!
We have so much confidence in the security of the Fire-
King, that we shall immediately replace it by another.
A. McClokk A Co.
Another Tsst. —This is to certify, that on the 25th of
September lust, we purchased of 11 D. Rice, Esq., one of
Mr. J. M. B. Davidson’s “ Fire-kings,” (No. 4, Single
Flange); that on the 14th November past,it was subject
ed to a very severe test, in the burning of our warehouse,
in which wi* stored a large quantity of whiskey and other
combustible material. On opening our safe, we found all
our papers, insisting of bills, letters and receipts, perfect
and entirely legible. Bkam.ey A Co.
DutiKi.ii. ccember 4,1552.
j. .11. B. Davidson's Fira-liing Safes, In Experi
mental and Accidental Fires, challenge Com
petition.
Tins is to certify, that on the 7th of May, 1851,1 pur
chased of J. M. B. Davidson, a No. 7, Single Flange Safe,
and that the same was subjected to a severe test, on the
lSth of December, ISSI. After..eflre was extinguished
its contents (books and papers,) were examined, and found
to be perfectly preserved, not a leaf of my books being
scorched. P. J. Claasskn,
Importer of Wines, Segars, Ac., Broadway, Albany.
After an examination ol P. J. Claassen’s Safe and pa
pers, we are convinced of the superiority o. Davidson's
Safes over all others.

Railroad Accident —We received no Western
mail yesterday in consequence, as wo, learn, of the
night express train from this city for Augusta hav
ing, about three o’clock yesterday morning, about
eifcjht miles on this side of Augusta, near Marsh’s
Turn Out, run iuto a culvert which, unknown to
toe engineer, had been injured. The engineer,
Capt. ltobinaon, was seriously if' not fatally injured
having been caught between the tender and engine.
One of the liiemen was also injured, but very
slightly. Two of the freight cars we»e entirely
demolished. The road being blocked up, the mail
train from Augusta returned, having transferred a
portion of its passengers to the night express tram,
which proceeded with an engine taken from tho
regular freight train to this city, where it arrived
a quarter after nine o’clock last evening.
The only mail received was one letter bag.
Capt. Robinson, we understand, was taken back
to Augusta. The engine was embedded in the
culvert some ten or twelve f et, where it remained
when the trains left the Turn Out.— Ch. OourUr ,
