Small Pox. —Our information on this subject is
more favorable. No new cases have been report
ed. Out of the fourteen heretofore reported, five
have died and only two of the remainder are con
sidered in danger. The others are said to be
rapidly recovering. -
We are pleased to learn that the report of Small
Pox at Dry Lake, Brooks county, was a false
alarm, and that the disease has not made its ap
pearance in that neighborhood.— Thomasiille En
terprise, 24th.
Killed bt the Accidental Discharge of a
Gcx.—On Saturday last a young man, William
Hart, in company with Charles T. Irwin, while
engaged in the sport of bird shooting in a pond
near the residence of Mr. Irwin in this county,
was shot through the body by the accideutal dis
charge of a rifle, from which he died about 9
o’clock Saturday night. They were in a small
boat when the sad affair happened, chasing a
wounded craue. It seems that their guns had
been laid down upon the seats for the chase, when
the boat ccming in contact with a stump threw
oue of the guns from its position causing it to
explode, when young Hart received the! ball
through his abdomen.— ThomasdlU ( Ga.) Enter

Our Mineral Resocrces. —These are too much
neglected. We have in our up-country regions,
immense treasures of mineral wealth yet to be
developed. Our friend W. R. Jones has exhibi
ted to us specimens of Copper ore, from a mine
owned by nim in Fannin county, Georgia, which
indicate vast richness in the Copper mines of that
section. Mr. Jones’s mine is located on what is
known as the “Duck Town’’ lead, and so far as we
are capable of judging, are the richest in all that
region of country. —Atlanta Intelligencer.

H it E the pleasure of advising their customers and .the
public, that they have completed arrangements to obviate
two objections that have operated against their receiving so full
a 5 hare of patronage as they might otherwise have done. The
first, that of ceiugtoo far down town; the secoitd. that of
having a fully competent and practical man at the tend of our
mechanical department. The first has been cancelled, by our
fitting up at No. S3 Jackson street, opposite the warehouse of
M. R. Stovall, and near the Bell Tower, a large and convenient
Workshop. The second, by securing the services of Mr. E. E.
SCOFIELD, who will have charge of the mechanical depart
ment of the business. We are thus rrepared. from the central
position of our Shop on Jackson street, and the one in the rear
of our Store on Broad street, to accommodate both up and
downtown. W'ehavc a large additional force of workmen,
and shall be prepared to execute any style of work known in
our line, with promptness, and at moderate prices. We most
respectfully solicit a share of public patronage.

N. B.—We are not ambitious of occupying a “ leading posi
tion” In the trade of this city, and do not propose to put forth
any “ new effort,” or trick of legerdemain to gain it, or to oust
others from it, but shall try the old-fashioned way of getting a
living by doing good work, at as cheap a rate as we can afford
it: and though we can’t claim much practical knowledge of the
bAiness in behalf of our “settler,” we do think we have the
right to claim with emphasis in behalf of our junior—he having
had 33 years of constant practical experience—2s of them in
this city, and not subject to a discount of II years spent in the
cotton market. W e are not disposed to bosst of our -facilities”
to get goods so cheap as to make it impossible to be “under
sold yet we teel very sure that if others sell cheaper, it will
hardly be “possible” that they will receive “ fair remunerative
prices.” As “ hope springs eternal in the human breast,” and
as we are also stimulated by the lines learned in our school
days, “ Tall oaks from little acorns grow,” &e., Ac., we shall
indulge the hope that at some future day we gaay approximate
so near “a 1 eliding position” in the trade of our city as to
make it a question not entirely “ beyond controversy” whether
it shall be retained and monopolised by those who so confident
ly appropriate its exclusive occupancy to themselves. We
trust our friends will pardon us for entertaining such ambitious
hopes. oct!3-dtf

There is to be found in this establishment a
greater variety, and a larger stock of pure and
genuine Natural, Mixed and Manipulated FER
TILIZERS, than in any other South of Baltimore,
and the Planters of Geergia, South Carolina and
Alabama, are requested to call and examine the
stock before buying elsewhere —they will do well
to do so.
The most satisfactory certificates from reliable
Planters in Georgia and South Carolina, are daily
coming in, testifying to the virtue of these Ma
nures, and will be, after Ist of November,
warded in pamphlet form to any who may wish to”
see them.
The AMERICAN GUANO, notwithstanding the
unfavorable season, has won a reputation through
out Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, (where
it has been extensively used,) that sets aside all
cavil as to its position among the best Fertilizers
yet discovered. It stands side by side with Peru
vian.
It is true there have been some failures—always
will be—so there has been with Stable Manure
and Peruvian, indeed, every kind this seasen, but
that does not prove that American Guano will not
pay a large per centage. In almost every case,
where there has been what is called a failure, it
has been owing either to the manner in which it
was applied, the cultivation or the quantity used.
Some put it too far from the seed—some lose half
by the wind blowing it away—others by mixing
it with Stable Manure, or by using not half enough
to the acre ; but take it as it was used, by the in
experienced as well as the experienced Planter,
and so far as we have been able to learn the truth,
in niue cases out es ten the Guanoed Cotton, Corn,
Wheat, Oats, Barley, Rye, Turnips, and all Gar
den Vegetables, have yielded nearly twice as
much as the unguanoed land—so it pays even in
the dryest seasons. You make but little this year
—poor crops—but if you had used no Fertilizer,
you would have made next to nothing. If the
seasons had continued throughout July and Au
gust as thev did up to the 15th of JuDe, the old
worn-out hills of Georgia and Carolina would
have groaned under the weight of the most over
whelming crops that were ever gathered. So
don’t be discouraged, but follow the example of
the Dicksons, Thos. Whaley, T. J. Smith, of Han
cock ; Judge Roberts, of’Warren; Dr. Mims,
TANARUS, G. Lamar, and the Ransfords, of Edgefield,
S. C.; who return annually to their land from $4
to $6 worth of Fertilizers per acre, and your suc
cess will be like theirs, an overwhelming income
for the money invested, to say nothing of the per
manent improvement of your lands.
Among tne varieties I offer to the public, are
the following; AMERICAN, PERUVIAN, SWAN
ISLAND, COLUMBIAN, MONK’S ISLAND CO
LUMBIAN, MEXICAN GUANO, RUFFIN’S
PHOSPHO, (which is one-half Peruvian,)SANDS’,
HOYT’S. LONGETT SUPER-PHOSPHATES, and
MANIPULATED GUANOS, BONE DUST and

All these Manures are pulverised and ready for
immediate use. All orders w i l receive prompt

PATENT MEDICINES.•
SARSAPARILLA.
At (IMPOUND remedy In which we have labored to pro
duce the most effectual alterative that can be made. It is
a concentrated extract of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with
other substances of still greater alterative power as te afford an
effective antidote for tne diseas s Sarsaparilla is reputed to
cure. It is believed that such a remedy is wanted by those
who suffer from Strumous complaints, and teat one which will
accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to this
large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens. How completely this
compound will do it has been proven by experiment on many
of the worst cases to be found of the following complaints ;
Scrofula and Scrofulous Complaints, Eruptions and Eruptive
Diseases. Ulcers, Pimples, Blotches. Tumors, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Affections, Mercurial Dis
eate. Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tic Douloureux, Debility, Dyspep
sta and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Rose or St. Anthony's Fire,
and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from Impurity
of the Blood.
This compound will be found a great promoter of health,
when taken in the spring, to expel the font humors which fes
ter in the blood at this season of the year. By the timely ex
pulsion of them many rankling disorders are nipped in the bud.
Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy, spare themselves
from the endurance of foul eruptions ’ and ulcerous sores,
through which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions,
if not assisted to do this through the natural channels of the
body by au alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated blood
whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in
pimples, eruptions or sores ; cleanse it w-hen you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it whenever it is
foul, and your feelings wii] tell you when. Even where no
particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer tor cleansing the blood. Keep the Flood healthy, and all
is well_; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be
no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong,
and the great machinery of life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has. anil deserves much, the reputation of accom
plishing these ends. But the world has been egregriouely de
ceived by preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has
not all the virtue that is claimed for it, but more because manv
preparations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of it. con
tain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else.
During late years the public have been misled by large bot
tles, Meiendiug to give a quart of Extract of .Sarsaparilla lor
one awla. . Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if but often no
curative properties whatever. Hence, bitter and painful disap
pointment has followed the use of the various extract? of Sar
saparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is justly
despised, and has become synonymous with imposition and
cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to
supply such a remedy ft shall rescue the name from the load of
obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground
for believing it has virtues w’ ieh are irresistible by the ordinary
run of the diseases it is Intended to cure. In order to secure
their complete eradication from the system, the remedv should
be judiciously taken according to directions on the bottle.

HAIR INVIGORATOR.
AN EFFECTIVE, SAFE AND ECONOMICAL
COMPOUND,
FOR RESTORING GREY HAIR
to its original color, without dyin., and preventing the Hair
from turning grey.
FOR PREVENTING BALDNESS,
and curing it when there Is the least particle of vitality for re

FOR REMOVING SCURF & DANDUFF
and all Cutaneous Affection? if the Scalp.
FOR BEAUTIVYING THE HAIR,
mparting to it an unequalled gloss and brilliancy, making it
soft and silky in its texture, and causing It to curl readily.
The great celebrity and the increasing demand for this une
qualled preparation, convinces the proprietor that one trial is
only necessary to satisfy a discerning public of itssuperiorquaii
ties over any other preparation at present in use. It cleanses
the head and scalp from dandrufi and other cutaneous diseases ;
causes the hair to grow luxuriantly, and gives it a rich, soft,
-lossy and flexible ajipearance ; and also where the hair is
ooseningand thinning, it will give strength and vigor to the
roots, ana restore the growth to those parts which have become
bald, causing tto yield a fresh covering of hair.
There arehundreds of Ladies and Gentlemen In i iw York
who have had their hair restored by the use of the Inv.gorator,
when all other preparations had failed. L. M. has in his pos
session letters innumerable testifying to the above facts, from
persons of the highest respectability. It will effectually pre
vent the hair from turning grey until the latest period of life;
and In cases where the liairnas already changeu its color, the
use of the Invlgorator will certainly restore it to its original
hue, giving it a dark, glossy appearance. Asa perfume for the
toilet and a Hair Restorative, it is peculiarly recommended,
having an agreeable fragrance ; and the great facilities it affords
In dressing the hair, which, when moist with the invigorator
can be dressed in any required form so as to preserve its placo,
whether plain or In curls—hence the great demand for It by the
ladies as a standard toilet article which none ought to be with

L. MILLER would call the attention of Parents and Guar

Hair inclines to b weak. The use of it lays the foundation for
a good head of Hair, as it removes any impurities that may

Bxttlb Caxrx, Mich., Dec. 21st, 1858.
Prof. Wood: Thee wilt please accept a line to Inform thee
that the hair on my head all fell off over twenty years ago,
caused by a complicated chronic disease, attended with an erup
tion on the head. A continual course of suffering through lire
having reduced me to a state of dependence, I nave not been
able to obtain stuft for caps, neither have I Uten able to do
them up, in consequence of which my head has suffered ex
tremely from cold. This induced me to pay Briggs and Hodges
almost the last cent I had on earth for a two dollar bottle of,thy
Hair Restorative about the first of August last. I have faith
fully followed the directions and the bald spot is now covered
with hair thick and black, though short, it is also coming In all
over my head. Feeling confident that another large bottle
would restore It entirely and permanently. I feel anxious to
persevere in its use. and being destitute ot means to purchase
any more, I would ask thee if thee wouldst not be willing to
send me an order on thine agents for a bottle, and receive to
thyself the scripture declaration—” the reward is to those that

Thy friend, Scbaksah Kikbt.
Ligosteb. Noble Cos., Indiana, Feb. sth, 1859,
Prof. O.J. Wood—Dear Sir: In the latter part ofthe vear
1853, while attending the State and National Law School of the
State of New York, my hair, from a cause unknown to me, com
menced falling off very rapidly, so that in the short space of six
mqpths, the whole upper part of my scalp was almost entirely
bereft of its covering, and much ofthe remaining portion upon
the side and back part of mv head shortly after became grev. so
that you will not be surprised when I tell you that upon my re
turn to the State of Indiana, my more casual acquaintances
were not so much at a loss to discover the cause of the change In
my appearance, as my more intimate acquaintances were to re
cognise me at all.
I at once made application to the most skilfril physicians in
the ceuntrv, bat receiving no assurances from them that my hair
could agath be restored, I was forced to become reconciled to
my ftite, until fortunately. In the latter part of the year 1857,
your Restorative was recommended to me by a druggist, as be
ing the most reliable Hair Restorative in use. I tried oue bottle,
and found to my great satisfaction that it was producing the de
sired effect. Since that time, 1 have used seven dollars’ worth
of your Restorative, and as a result, have a rich coat or very soft
black hair which no money can buy.
Asa mark of my gratitude for your labor and skill in the pro
duction of so wonderful an article, I have recommended its use
to many of my friends and acquaintances, who, I am happy to
Inform you, are using it with like effect.

sex, and from whatever cause originated, and no matter of how
long standing.
These symptoms, in part, are experienced often by sufferers
with diseases of tne Bladder, Kidneys, Gravel and Dropsy, and
Invariably by the injudicious or nervous and debilitated. It Is a
fact, long since established, that any disease of these organs
affects the mind more than any and all others, and if allowed to
go on—which this medicine invariably removes —soon follows
Loss of Power, Fatuity and Epileptic Fits —in one of which the
gttient may expire. Who can say that these excesses are not
equently followed by these direful diseases. Insanity and Con
sumption ? The record cf the Insane Asylums and the melan
choly deaths by Consumption, bear ample witness to the truth
of these assertions. In Lunatic Asylums the most melancholy
exhibition appears. The countenance is actually sullen and
quite destitute —neither mirth nor grief ever visits It. Should a
sound of the voice occur, it is rarely articulate.
“ With woeful measures, wan Despair,
Low. sullen sounds, his grief beguiled.”
Debilityis most terrible, and has brought thousands upon
thousands to untimely graves ; thus blasting the ambition of
many noble youths. It can be cured by the use of this infallible
remedy.
The mass of voluntary testimony in possession of tne proprie
tor, vouching for its virtues and its curative powers, is immense,
embracing names well known to science and fame. Certificates
of cures, from ope month to twenty years’ standing, and of the
most reliable and respectable character, are open for inspection
from Governors of States, Judges, eminent Physicians, aid dis
tinguished Clergymen.
HELMBOLD S EXTRACT BUCHU is prepared directly
according to the rules of Pharmacy and Chemistry, with the
greatest accuracy and chemical knowledge and care devoted in
Its combination. See Prof. Dewees’ valuable work3 on the
Practice of Physic, and moot of the late Standard Works of
Medicine.
HELMBOLD’S BUCHU U safe and pleasant In taste and
odor but immediate in Its action.
