Homicide.— We learn from Mr. Thomas, hack

Porler was shot last Tuesday evening iu Lump

Wa know nothing of the circumstances connected

Suicide bv an Editor.— Just before going to
press, we were grieved to hear of the death of J.
-N. Bowen, late editor of the Independent Press.—
The deceased committed suicide on Saturday last,
at Lake City, by shooting himself through the
head with a pistol. We have not heard any cause
assigned for the rash act. His remains passed
through this city yesterday on the Cecile, to he
forwarded to his friends in

Gin House Burnt.— On yesterday morning, just
before daylight, the Gin House on the plantation
of Mr. Charles Bannerman, on Lake lamonia, was
destroyed by fire. The fire is said to have been
communicated by negroes, instigated by a white
man. We presume the suspected parties have
been arrested. It is thought that an investigation
will develop an extensive plot for the burning of
gin houses. At any rate, a little more caution
than usual on the part of our citizens will do no
harm. — Floridian, 10th.
Main Trunk.— We were informed by Col. Mc-
Intyre, who is contractor on this road, that there
are 500 hands at work on the road between
this place and Thomasville, and that they are
making speedy progress. Col. Mclntyre speaks
what he knows, and he says that the road will be
completed to Bainbridge In October, 1861. When
we consider the great advantages and benefits that
will accrue to us from this road, every man in
Southern Georgia, should feel grateful, and proud
that the road was placed in the hands of such in
defatigable men. All praise to them.

Official Vote of Ohio.— The aggregate vote
of Ohio is very heavy, amounting to 412,704, and
exceeding that of last year (355,708) by 56,036
votes-a remarkable increase. The aggregate
vote on Supreme Judge ia heavier by 7,000 than
that on any other office, clearly showing where
the intensity of the struggle lay. Brinkerhoff’s
majority is 13,004. Murray’s plurality is 25,278;
his absolute majority over the Democratic and
Union votes combined, 16,635. Sargent’s plural
ity is 24,840; his clear majority over all opposition
15,654. The average Republican plurality is
21,374; average majority over combined opposi
tion, 15,432.

SAVANNAH, Oct. 26.—[Republican.]— Cotton —Our last
week’s circular closed upon an active’ market, and one, com
paratively bare of stock with an advance on quotations of the
previous week’s report of b<gi>Se, On Friday, the first day of
the. pr’ sent review, there was a continued buoyancy, sales
footing 2247 bales, and the market advancing. Saturday the
sales were limited to 605 bales, though prices we e fuller than
on the day previous. On Monday the largest number of buyers
during the season were out, and much excitement prevailed,
everything offering being eagerly taken up at prices ruling on
Saturday ; sales footing 1400 bales. The same feeling continued
on Tuesday, and 1146 pales changed hands, the ottering stock
quite limited and prices full. Wednesday was another excited
(lay, and sales of 2000 bales sold, though only 2100 were report
ed, at a still further advance. Yesterday, the stock were very
light and holders asking higher rates, which were in some in
stances obtained ; the sales footed 2041 baits, at the following
quotations, which show an advance for the week of fully %®y
on prices ruling at the date of our report. Middlings iOklt≪
Strict Middlings ; Good Middlings—; Mid

Flour— The stock of Flour is about equal to the demand
Our quotations are the same as those given Just week, viz

brands that are known sell readily at these figures. Borne low
grades have been sold considerably under our rates. The in
spection nortli not oeing as strict as with us, shippers are often
disappointed—Northern Extra frequently classing as only Su
perfine, and other grades in the same way. We coutinue to
quote Forest City Mills (Savannah) as follows: Superfine
$7 50, Extra $6 25, Family $9, Extra Family $9 25.
Corn —The stock continues heavy, and the demand light.
From store, mixed 90c, white 95e.

Aye—There is a good demand for planting. Stock heavy.
We quote $1 20@1 25.
Huy— With a better stock, the demand has not been so good.
There being considerable a? oat, buyers are cautious how they

Northern changed hands on the wharf at $1 25 per hundred.
Another cargo of Eastern just in, held at $1 60. We also hear

There is to be found in this establishment a
greater variety, and a larger stock of pure and
genuine Natural, Mixed and Manipulated FER
TILIZERS, than in any other South of Baltimore,
and the Planters of Georgia, South Carolina and
Alabama, are requested to call aud examiue the
stock before buying elsewhere —they will do well
to do so.
The most satisfactory certificates from reliable
Planters in Georgia anil South Carolina, are daily
coming in, testifying to the virtue of these Ma
nures, and will be, after Ist of November, for
warded in pamphlet form to any who may wish to
see them.
The AMERICAN GUANO, notwithstanding the
unfavorable season, has won a reputation through
out Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, (where
it has been extensively used,) that sets aside all
cavil as to its position among the best Fertilizers
yet discovered. It stands side by side with Peru
vian.
It is true there have been some failures—always
will be —so there has been with Stable Manure
and Peruvian, indeed, every kind this season, but
that does not prove that American Guano will not
pay a large per centage. In almost every case,
where there has been what is called a failure, it
has been owing either to the manner in which it
was applied, the cultivation or the quantity used.
Some put it too far from the seed—some lose half
by the wind blowing it away—others by mixing
it with Stable Manure, or by usingnothalfenough
to the acre ; but take it as it was used, by the in
experienced as well as the experienced Planter,
ana so far as we have been able to learn the truth,
in nine cases out of ten the Guanoed Cotton, Corn,
Wheat, Oats, Barley, Rye, Turnips, and all Gar
den Vegetables, have’ yielded nearly twice as
much as the unguanoed land—so it pays even in
the dryest seasons. You make but little this year
—poor crops—but if you had used no Fertilizer,
you would have made next to nothing. If the
seasons - had continued throughout July and Au
gust as they did up to the 15th of June, the old
worn-out hills of Georgia and Caiolimrwould
have groaned under the weight of the most over
whelming crops that were ever gathered. So
don’t be discouraged, but follow the example of
the Dicksons, Thos. Whaley, T. J. Smith, of Han
cock ; Judge Roberts, of Warren ; Dr. Mims,
T. G. Lamar, and the Ransfords, of Edgefield,
S. C.; who return runually to their land from #4
to $6 worth of Fertilizers per acre, aud your suc
cess will be like theirs, an overwhelming income
for the money invested, to say nothing of the per
manent improvement of your lands.
Among the varieties I offer to the public, are
the following; AMERICAN, PERUVIAN, SWAN
ISLAND, COLUMBIAN, MONK’S ISLAND CO
LUMBIAN, MEXICAN GUANO, RUFFIN’S
PHOSPHO, (which is one-half Peruvian,) SANDS’,
HOYT’S, LONGETT SUPER-PHOSPHATES, and

PATENT MEDICINES.
AYERS’ SARSAPARILLA^
A COMPOUND remedy in which we have labored to pro
duce the most effectual alterative that can be made. It is
a concentrated extract of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with
other substances of still greater alterative power as t afford an
effective antidote for the diseas s Sarsaparilla is reputed to
cure. It is believed that such a remedy is wanted by those
who suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one which will
accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to thU
large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens. How completely this
compound will do it has been proven by experiment on many
of the worst cases to be found of the following complaints :
Scrofula and Scrofulous Complaints, Eruptions and Eruptive
Diseases, Ulcers, Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Affections, Mercurial Dis
ease. Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tie Douloureux, Debility, Dyspep
sia and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Rose or St. Anthony’s Fire,
and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from Impurity
of the Blood.
This compound will be found a great promoter of health,
when taken in the spring, to expel the foul humors which fes
ter iu the blood at this season of the year. By the timely ex
pulsion of them many rankling disorders are nipped in the bud.
Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy7““spare themselves
from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous sores,
through which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions,
if not assisted to do this througli the natural channels of the
body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated blood
whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in
pimples, eruptions or sores ; cleanse it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it whenever it is
foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Even where no
particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer tor cleansing the blood. Keep the I lood healthy, and all
is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be
no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong,
and the great machinery of life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputation of accom
plishing these ends. But the world has been egregrlously de
ceived by preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has
not all the virtue that is claimed tor it, but more because many
preparations, pretending to te concentrated extracts of it, con
tain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else.
During late years the public have been misled by large bot
tles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of Sarsaparilla lor
one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, lor
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsaparilla but often no
curative properties whatever Hence, bitter and painful disap
pointment has followed the H6e of the various extracts of Sar
saparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is justly
despised, and has become synonymous with imposition and
cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to
supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of
obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground
for believing it has virtues w: leh are irresistible by the ordinary
run of the diseases it is intended to cure. In order to secure
tlieir complete eradication from the system, the remedy ,-hould
be Judiciously takeii according to directions on the bottle.

that it may be relied on to do for their relief all it has ever been

FOR PREVENTING BALDNESS,
and curing it when there is the least particle of vitality for re
cuperative energy remaining.
FOR REMOVING SCURF & DANDUFF
and all Cutaneous Affection? jf the Scalp.
FOR BEAUTIFYING THE HAIR,
mparting to it an unequalled gloss and brilliancy, making it
soft and Bilky in its t exture, and causing It to curl readily.
The great celebrity and the increasing demand for this une
qualled preparation, convinces the proprietor that one tnal is
only necessary to satisfy a discerningpublic of its superior quali
ties over any other preparation at present in use. It cleanses
the head and scalp from dandruff and other cutaneous diseases;
causes the hair to grow luxuriantly, and gives it a rich, soft,
glossy and flexible appearance; and also where the hair is
loosening and thinning, it will give strength and vigor to the
roots, and restore the growth to those parts which Lave become
bald, causing it to yield a fresh covering of hair.
There are hundreds of Ladles and Gentlemen in i iw York
who have had their hair restored by the use of the Invigorator,
when all other preparations had failed. L. M. has In his pos
session letters innumerable testifying to the above facts, from
persons of the highest respectability. It will effectually pre
vent the hair from turning grey until the latest period or life;
and in cases where the hair has already changed its color, the
use of the Invlgorator will certainly restore it to its original
hue, giving it a dark, glossy appearance. Asa perfume for the
toilet and a Hair Restorative, it is peculiarly recommended,
having an agreeable fragrance ; and the great facilities it affords
in dressing the hair, which, when moist with the Invigorator
can be dressed in any required form so as to preserve its placo,
whether plain or lacurls—hence the great demand for it by the
ladies as a standard toilet article which none ought to be with
out, as the price places it within the reach of all, being
ONLY TWENTY-FIVE CENTS
per bottle, to be had at all respectable druggists’ and perfumers.
L. MILLER would call the attention of Parents and Guar
dians to the use of nis Invigorator, in cases where the childrens’
Hair inclines to be weak. The use of it lays the foundation for
a good head of Hair, as it removes any impurities that may
have become connected with the scalp, the removal ot which is
necessary, both for the health of the chUd and the future ap

Prof. Wood; Thee wilt please accept a line to inform tiiee
that the hair on my head all fell off over twenty years ago,
caused by a complicated chronic disease, attended with an erup
tion on the head. A continual course of suffering through life
having reduced me to a state of dependence, I have not been
able to obtain stuff for caps, neither have I been able to do
them up, in consequence or which my head lias suffered ex
tremely from cold. This induced me to pay Briggs and Hodges
almost the last cent I had on earth for a two dollar bottle of tiiy

over my head. Feeling confident that anotiier huge bottle
would restore it entirely and permanently, I feel anxious to
persevere in its use, and being destitute of means to purchase
any more, I would ask thee if thee wouldst not be willing to
send me an order on thine agents for a bottle, and receive to
thyself the script ure declaration—“ the reward is to those that
re kind to the widow aud the fatherless.”

Lioonier, Noble Cos., Indiana, Feb. Bth, 1859,
Prof. O. J. Wood—Dear Mr: In the latter part of the year
1852, while attending the State and National Law Schqol of the
State of New York, my hair, from a cause unknown to me, com
menced f-vllipg off verjfcrapidly, so that in the short space of six
mqjiths, the whole upper part of my scalp was almost entirely
bereft of its covering, and much of the remaining portion upon
the side and back part of my head shortly after became grey, so
that you will not be surprised when 1 tell you that upon my re
turn to the State of Indiana, my more casual acquaintances
were not so much at a loss to discover the cause of the change in
my appearance, as my more Intimate acquaintances were to re
cognise me at all.
I at once made application to the most skilful physicians ln
the country, but receiving no assurances from them that my hair
could agatn be restored, I was forced to become reconciled to
my fifta, until, fortunately, in the latter part of the year 1807,
your was recommended to me by a druggist, as be
ing the most retabie Hair Restorative in use. I triea one bottle,
and found to my great sarioia.ttnu tjiat it was producing the de
sired effect. Since that time,’ I have used seven dollars’ worth
of your Restorative, and a&£ result, have a rich coat oi very soft
black hair which no money can buy.
Asa mark of my gratitude for your labor and skill in the pro
duction of so wonderful an article, I have recommended its use
to many of my friends and acquaintances, who, I am happy to
informyou, are using it witli like effect.
Very respectfully, yours, A. M. Latta,

HELMBOLD’S BUCHU for Excesses arising from Indiscre

sex, and from whatever cause originated, and no matter of how
long standing.
These symptoms, In part, are experienced often by sufferers
with diseases of tne Bladder, Kidneys, Gravel and Dropsy, and
invariably by the injudicious or nervous and debilitated. lUs a
fact, long since established, that any disease of these organs
affects the mind more than any and all others, and if allowed to
so on—which this medicine invariably removes —soon follows
loss of Power, Fatuity and Epileptic Fits—in one of which the
patient may expire. Whc can say that these excesses are not
frequently followed by these direful diseases, Insanity and Con
sumption ? T'-e record cf the Insane Asylums and the melan
choly deaths by Consumption. Lear ample witness to the tenth
of these assertions. In Lunatic Asylums the most melancholy
exhibition appears. The countenance is actually sullen and
quite destitute—neither mirth nor grief ever visits it. Should a
sound of the voice occur, it is rarely articulate.
“ With woeful measures, wan Despair,
Low, Bullen sounds, his grief beguiled.”
Debility Is most terrible, and has brought thousands upon
thousands to untimely graves ; thus blasting the ambition of
many noble youths. It can be cured by the use of this infallible
remedy.
The mass of voluntary testimony in possession of tne proprie
tor, vouching for its virtues and its curative powers, is immense,
embracing names well known to science and fame. Certificates
of cures, from one month to twenty years’ standing, and of the
most reliable and respectable character, are open for inspection
from Governors of States, Judges, eminent Physicians, and dis
tinguished Clergymen.
HELMBOLD’S EXTRACT BUCHU Is prepared directly
according to the rules of Pharmacy and Chemistry, with the
greatest accuracy and chemical knowledge and care devoted in
its combination. See Prof. Dewees’ valuable works on the.
Practice of Physic, aud most of the late Standard Works of
Medicine.
HELMBOLD’S BUCHU is safe and pleasant in taste and
odor but immediate in its action.
Personally appeared before me. an Alderman of the city of
Philadelphia, 11. T. HELMBOLD, Chemist, who, being duly
sworn, does say, that his preparation contains no Narcotic,
Mercury, or injurious D-ug, but are purely Vegetable,
H. T. HELMBOLD, Sole Manufacturer.
Sworn and subscribed before me, this 23d day of November,
1854. Wm. P. Hibbard, Alderman.
Price $1 per bottle, or six for $5, delivered to any address.
One thing certain, a trial costs but a Dollar—try it, aud be
convinced of its efficacy. And it is accompanied by reliable and
reeponsibie certificates from Professors of Medical Colleges,
Clergymen and others. Prepared by
H. T. HELMBOLD, Philadelphia.
