The tire undoubted was the work of some ma
h-gnaat fiend, as there had been no fire in the j
house for several days.
The greatest excisemen? prevails. A man was !
caught engaged in close conversation with a party
of negroes. He was immediately arrested. He
stated that he was from Columbus, and afterwards
said he was from Auburn—he said he was employ- :
ed by Louis Hetman in Columbus. He was locked
up for the night, and will Be examined on Friday.
W ©e be unto aim if found guilty.
The houses were saved by the untiring exer- !
lions of the men, and the bold and fearless man
ner in which the Ladies assisted. They were as
calm as could be expected on such an occasion. ;
and a great deal of credit is due them. There are j
eo eng.nee in the place. With backets and I
blankets they succeeded in queiuag the devour- [
--g element. The saving of the house of Messrs. !
Brown A Cos., was almost a miracle. The clothes
of some of the men who protected it, were burnt
on their backs..

Grand Union Bencnstration in Socth Nash
tillr —The Nashville Banner informs us of a
splendid turn-out of the Union men of South
N a?hvide, on Thursday evening last. There was a
large procession, composed of the various military
companies and ward clubs, with banners, bells,
torches, and transparences. The sidewalks were
densely crowded with spectators, a large number
of whom were ladies. The Banner savs ; m
The Public square was in a perfect blase of i
taut from myriad rockets, fierv serpents, romar.-
caadles, and transparencies. The people seeir.ed
perfectly wild with excitement, and made the
heavens* fairly re-echo with their hutras Xbe
procession, as it moved ronnd the Public Square
was headed by the Bell Grays. Next came the
Bell Highlanders, the Beii Bi'ues and the Bed Ca
dets. i nea toliowed an open carnage containing
the speakesr.
One of the features of the procession was a
bona i-U steamboat taken from the river and
placed upon wheels and drawn by horses throegh
the streets. The speaking was in an open lot
uearly opposite Lincoln Hail. Brief and eloquent
rallying addresses were delivered br L. M. Tem
ple, Esq., and Geo. Baber, Esq., of Sumner, Ed. I
Goliad av. Esq., of Wilson, Col. Pickett, of Smith,
Geo. Quarles, and others.
The enthusiasm of the people throughout, was
unbounded, and wa have never heard public
speakers betore. greeted with such tremendous
shouts and cheers. - The whole affair was a grand
success, and wound up in a blase of glorious en
thnsiasm, and to the highest satisfaction of the
friends of Beil and Everett.
