from our Evening Edition of yesterday.
Large Fire in Opelika—Several Buildings
Entirely Consumed. — A large and disastrous lire
occurred in Qpelika last night, by which some half
u dozen buildings were entirely destroyed. 1 lie
row of buildings opposite the Opelika House and
near the depot, were in flames when the train left.
Our intelligence is exceedingly meagre, as the
excitement in town prevented our informer from
getting anything like correct news. It was sup
posed to have been the work of an incendiary.
We shall obtain the particulars in the mail this
evening.— Columbus Sun, 26 th.
Distressing Accident.—As a young couple
were going down Hunter street yesterday after
noon, in a buggy, the horse, from some cause, be
came unmanageable, and ran away._ The young
gentleman losing his presence of mind, dropped
the reins and fell from the vehicle, leaving his
lair companion, Miss Barnard, of Marietta, to her
fate. She was thrown from the buggy on an em
bankment near the brick yard, and so stunned
that when picked up she was thought to be dead.
She is alive, however, although still in a state of
unconsciousness. Her physician reports no bones
broken, but she is in a very criticul condition.
Atlanta American , 26 th.
Frost. —We learn from Mr. Howard, of Russel
county, that the frost has been very severe in his
section,,doing considerable damage to the late
cotton and vegetables. From this portion of the
tftate we have the same discouraging news. The
turnips, so necessary for the approaching winter,
are almost entirely ruined /in many places and
farmers report that they will not make more
than half a crop— Colwmjot^Time*.
Elopement of a School Girl.— An elopement
took place in this citv on Monday night last be
tween Miss Jennie Strickland, a student of the
S. M. F. College, and a Mr. Hill; both parties are
residents of Grantville in this State. There was
no knowledge on the part of the Faculty of any
intimacy or attachment existing between the par
ties, and as the young man was a stranger in our
community, his presence, of course, excited uo
suspicion in the miqd of anybody. They procured
u private conveyance to Conyers, where they took
the train for Atlanta, and were married at the
Washington Hall immediately after their arrival,
and proceeded on the same train to West Point.—
Covington (Ga.) Times.
Homicide. —On Saturday a rencontre occurred
at Shubuta, on the Mobile’ and Ohio Railroad, be
tween George Cherry, a grocer, and Wm. Cooper,
a blacksmith. They drew pistols simultaneously,
4’ooper firing first, wounding Cherry in the hand,
and Cherry’s ball taxing effect in the groin, mak
ing only a contusion. They were separated, but
somehow permitted to get together again, Cherry
stabbing Cooper in the side with a bowie-knife, of
which lie diea iu fifteen minutes. Cherry had not
been apprehended.— Mobile (Ala.) Mercury.
A Georgia Pistol. —Dr. W. M. Butler, Surgeon
Dentist, of our city, has invented a most formida
ble weapon, for which he is now on a visit to
Washington city, to take the necessary steps for
a patent. The pistol is a breech loading one, the
action of firing reloading 16 times in succession.
The principle upon which it is constructed is a
very simple, but ingenious one, and no doubts are
entertained by those who have seen it of its entire
success. — Marietta Advocate.
BAilroad Meeting at Hawkinsville. —We
learn fr° m Pulaski Times that a large number
of the cu izeus Pulaskb Houston, Wilcox, Dooly
iml Telfair assembled in Hawkinsville,
Wednesday, Oc> ber for the purpose of
bearing the addressed upon the subject of build
ing a Brunch Road from .‘bat point to the Macon
and Brunswick Road. The meeting was an en
thusiastic one, and remarkably orderly and well
behaved, and the result of the meeting quite satis
factory. Judge Cocliraue made an able address
in favor of the project—and Col. S, T-Pauey, of
Macon, also aclvocated the scheme. The total
amount of stock already taken will not tali lar
short of one hundred and ten thousand dollar*.
With this sum, Judge Cochrane proposes enter
ing upon the work, and will commence the cur
vey of the route iu a few weeks. More money is
still needed, but it is confidently expected that it
can be raised without
Distressing Casualty. —lt is our painful duty
Ho record a melancholy occurrence which took
place in our harbor on Friday last the 19ih inst.
Two young men James Bennet Piles, and Thomas
Dobson, bot h of this city, were out sailing on Fri
day last, in a small boat", the wind blowing at the
(time heavily from the North West, and when in
(the vicinity of Cat Point, on the opposite side of
the river were seen late in the afternoon clinging
to the bottom of their boat. Assistance was sent
p -vmediately from tbe town, but before any of the
boa. 4 -* could reach the place of disaster it had be
come dark that they could not find- the boat,
which had probably in the meantime drifted seve
ral miles. At sunrise on the 21st, the boat was
discovered n?ar Cat Point, having drifted nearly
ashore and the body of young Piles was found in
the boat in-a sitting position with his feet raised
up on one of the thwarts, as if to keep them out
*f the water—the boat being about half tilled.
The night of the 20th was exceedingly cold and
it is supposed that after succeeding in righting up
the boat, and getting a portion of the water out
of her, Dobson probably attempted to swim ushore
aud was drowned in the effort—-Piles remaining
in the boat to await assistance and in so doing
perished by reason of the cold. The body of
Thomas Dobson has not yet been found although
the most diligent search has been made. Mr.
Piles was an industrious and promising young man
about nineteen years of age, and Mr. Thomas
Dobson aged sixteen, son of Andrew aud Mary
Dobson of this city, was well known and esteemed
by his numerous friends and our citizens geueral
]v, for bis estimable character. This unfortunate
accident has thrown a gloom over a large circle
of frieuds and acquaintances of the deceased.—

Ohio carried by THKXEGROKS.-Tlie official returns
of the Ohio election disclose the fact that the
Black Republican majority was only 8,794. Four
teen thousand negroes were allowed to votenuder
the decision of Judge Brinkinliotf. Leaving out
this negro vote, the Democrats have a majority of
nearly six thousand. Thus the startling, the hu
miliating fact appears that Ohio, a sovereign State
of the Union, is uuder negro rule. To such a dis
c-race would the Republican party reduce the
whole country. This thing is too shameful, too
sickening too revolting, to contemplate. The fol
lowing paragraph is from the Cleveland Plain
“ Full blooded negroes voted In several of the

as black as coal peddled tickets. Negroes hired
carriages and carried white men to the polls. Ae

Guano Depot,
NO. 2 WARREN BLOCK,
Augusta.
There is to be found, in this establishment a
greater variety, and a larger stock of pure and
genuine Natural, Mixed and Manipulated FER
TILIZERS, than in any other South of Baltimore,
and the Planters of Geergia, South Carolina and
Alabama, are requested to call and examine the
stock before buying elsewhere—they will do well
to do so.
The most satisfactory certificates from reliable
Planters in Georgia and South Carolina, are daily
coming in, testifying to the virtue of these Ma
nures, and will be, after Ist of November, for
warded in pamphlet form to any who may wish to
see them.
The AMERICAN GUANO, notwithstanding the
unfavorable season, has won a reputation through
out Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, (where
it has been extensively used,) that sets aside all
cavil as to its position among the best Fertilizers
yet discovered. It stands side by side with Peru
vian.
It is true there have been somefailures—always
will be—so there has been with Stable Manure
and Peruvian, indeed, every kind this season, but
that does not prove that American Guano will not
pay a large per centage. In almost every case,
where there has been what is called a failure, it
has been owing either to the manuer in which it
was applied, the cultivation or the quantity used.
Some put it too far from the seed—some lose half
by the wind blowing it away—others by mixing
it with Stable Manure, or by usingnothalfenough
to the acre ; but take it as it was used, by the in
experienced as well as the experienced” Planter,
ana so far as we have been able to learn the truth,
in nine cases out es ten the Guanoed Cotton, Corn,
Wheat, Oats, Barley, Rye, Turnips, and all Gar
den Vegetables, have yielded nearly twice as
much as the unguanoed land—so it pays even in
the dryest seasons. You make but little this year
—poor crops —but if you had used no Fertilrzhr,
you would have made next to nothing. If the
seasons had continued throughout July and Au
gust as they did up to the 15th of June, the old
worn-out hills of Georgia and Carolina would
have groaned under the weight of the most over
whelming crops that were ever gathered. So
don’t be discouraged, but follow the example of
the Dicksons, Thos. Whaley, T. J. Smith, of Han
cock ; Judge Roberts, of Warren; Dr. Mims,
T. G, Lamar, and the Ranst'ords, of Edgefield,
ASrGr; who return annually to their land from $4
to $6 worth of Fertilizers per acre, and your suc
cess will be like theirs, an overwhelming income
for the money invested, to say nothing of the per
manent improvement of your lands.
Among the yarieties I offer to the public, are
the following; AMERICAN, PERUVIAN,SWAN
ISLAND, COLUMBIAN, MONK’S ISLAND CO
LUMBIAN, MEXICAN GUANO, RUFFIN’S
PHOSPHO, (which is one-hall Peruvian,)SANDS’,
HOYT’S, LONGETT SUPER-PHOSPHATES, and

All these Manures are pulverised and ready for

PATENT MEDICINES.
IYFRS’ SARSAPARILLA.
A COMPOUND remedy in which we have labored to pro
duce the most effectual alterative that can be made. It is
a concentrated extract of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with
other substances of still greater alterative power as te afford an
effective antidote for the diseas s Sarsaparilla is reputed to
CU iT e ‘ ®' 3 believed that such a remedy is wanted by those
who suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one which will
accomplish their cure must prove of Immense service to this
large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens. How completely this
compound will do it has been proven by experiment on many
of the worst cases to be found of the following complaints :
Scrofula and Scrofulous Complaints, Eruptions and Eruptive
Diseases, Ulcers, Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Affections, Mercurial Dis
ease, Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tic Douloureux, Debility, Dyspep
sia and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Rose or St. Anthony’s Fire,
and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from Impurity
of the Blood.
This compound will be found a great promoter of health,
when taken in the spring, to expel the foul humors which fes
ter iu the blood at this season of the year. By the timely ex
pulsion of them many rankling disorders are nipped in the bud.
Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy,^spare themselves
from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous sores,
through which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions,
if not assisted to do this through the natural channels of t lie
body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated Mood
whenever you find it* impurities bursting through the skin in
pimples, eruptions or sores ; cleanse it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it whenever it is
foul, and your feelings will tell you wheu. Even where no
particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer torcleansing the blood. Keep the Mood healthy, and all
is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can he
no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong,
and the great machinery of life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputation of accom
plishing these ends. But the world has been egregriously de
ceived by preparations of it, partiy because the drug alone has
not all tne virtue that is claimed tor it, but more because many
preparations, pretending to Le concentrated extracts of it, con
tain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else.
During late years the public have been misled by large bot
tles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of Sarsaparilla ior
one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, lor
they not only contain little, if anv, Sarsaparilla but often no
curative properties whatever. Hence, bitter and painful disap
pointment has followed the use of the various extracts of Sar
saparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is justly
despised, and iias become synonymous with imposition and
cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to
supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of
obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground
for believing it has virtues wi ieh are irresistible by the ordinary
run of the diseases it is intended to cure. In order to secure
their complete eradication from the system, the remedy should
be judiciously taken according to directions on the tiottle.

HAIR IN VIGOR ATOR.
AN EFFECTIVE, SAFE AND ECONOMICAL
COMPOUND,
FOR RESTORING GREY HAIR
to its original color, without dyinc, and preventing the Hair
from turning grey.
FOR PREVENTING BALDNESS,
and curing it when there is the least particle of vitality for re
cuperative energy remaining.
FOR REMOVING SCURF St DANDUFF
and ‘HI fcUitaoaous Affections jf -the Scalp.
FOR BEAUTIFYING THE HAIR,
mparting to it an unequalled gloss and brilliancy, making it
soft and silky in its texture, and causing it to curl readily.
The great celebrity and the increasing demand for this une
qualled preparation, convinces the proprietor that one trial is
only necessary to satisfy a discerning public of its superior quali
ties over any other preparation at present in use. It cleanses
the head and scalp from dandruff and other cutaneous diseases ;
causestlie hairto grow luxuriantly, and gives it a rich, soft,
glossy and flexible appearance ; and also where the hair is
loosening and thinning, it will give strength and vigof to the
roots, and restore the growth to those parts which Lave become
bald, causing itto yield a fresh covering of hair.
There are hundreds of Ladles and Gentlemen in i iw York
who have had their hair restored by the use of the Inv.gorator,
when all other preparations had failed. L. M.has in his pos
session letters innumerable testifying to the above facts, from
persons of the highest respectability. It will effectually pre
vent the hair from turning grey until the latest period of life;
and in cases where the hair nas already changed its color, the
use of the lnvigorator will certainly restore it to its original
line, giving it a dark, glossy appearance. Asa perfume for the
toilet and a Hair Restorative, it is peculiarly recommended,
having an agreeable fragrance ; and the great facilities it affords
in dressing the hair, winch, when moist with the lnvigorator
can be dressed in any required form so as to preserve it* placo,
whether plain or in curls—hence the great demand for it by 1 lie
ladies as a standard toilet article which none ought to be with

L, MILLER would call the attention of Parents and Guar

Hair inclines to b weak. The use of it lays the foundation for
a good head of Hair, as it removes any impurities that may
have become connected with the scalp, the removal ot which is
necessary, both for the health of the child and the future ap

Prof. Wood: Thee wilt please accept a line to inform thee

having reduced me to a state of dependence, I have not been

them up. In consequence of which my head has suffered ex

inenced falling off very rapidly, so that in the short space of six
Biqpths, the whole upper part of my scalp was almost entirely
bereft of its covering, and much ofthe remaining portion upon
the side and back part of my head shortly after became grey, so
that you will not be surpriski when I tell you that upon my re
turn to tfre State of Indiana, my more casual acquaintances
were not so ruch at a loss to discover the cause of the change in
my appearance, as my more intimate acquaintances were to re

I at once made application to the most skilful physicians in

HELMBOLD’S BUCHU for Excesses arising from Indiscre

sex, aud from whatever cause originated, and no matter of how
long standing.
These symptoms, in part, are experienced often by sufferers
with diseases of the Bladder, Kidneys, Gravel and Dropsy, and
invariably by the injudicious or nervous and debilitated. It is a
fact, long since established, that any disease of these organs
affects the mind more than any and all others, and if allowed to
go on—which this medicine invariably removes—soon follows
Loss of Power, Fatuity- and Epileptic Fits—in one of which the
latient may expire. Who can say that these excesses are not
frequently “followed by these direful diseases, Insanity and Con
sumption ? The record of the Insane Asylums and the melan
choly deaths by Consumption, b*ar ample witness to the truth
of these assertions. In Lunatiiifiusylumsthe most melancholy
exhibition appears. The countenance is actually sullen ana
quite destitute—neither mirth nor grief ever visits it. Should a
sound of the voice occur, it is rarely articulate.
“ With woeful measures, wan Despair,
Low, sullen sounds, his grief beguiled.”
Debility is most terrible, aud has brought t housands upon
thousands to untimely graves ; thus blasting the ambition of
many noble youths. It can be cured by the use of this infallible
remedy.
The mass of voluntary testimony in possession of tne proprie
tor, vouching for it s virtues and its curative powers, is immense,
embracing names well known to scieuce and fame. Certificates
of cures, from one month to twenty years’ standing, and of the
most reliable and respectable character, are open for inspection
from Governors of States, Judges, eminent Physicians, and dis
tinguished ClergVmen.
HELMBOLD’S EXTRACT BUCHU is propared directly
according to the rules of Pharmacy and Chemistry, with the
‘reatest accuracy and chemical knowledge and care devoted in
ts combination. See Prof. Dewees’ valuable works on the
Practice of Physic, and most of the late Standard Works of
Medicine.
HELMBOLD’S BUCHU is safe and pleasant In taste and
odor but immediate in its action.
Personally appeared before me. an Alderman of the city of

ANALYZED
always presents us with the same essential elements, and gives
of course the true standard. Analyze the blood of a person
suffering from Consumption, Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia,
Scrofula, Ac., and we find in every instance certain deficiencies
in the red globules of Blood. Supply these deficiencies, and you
are made well. The BLOOD FOOD is founded upon this
Theory—hence its astonishing success. There are
FIVE PREPARATIONS
adapted to the deficiencies of the Blood in (Afferent diseases.
For Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, or any affection whatever of the
Throat or Lungs inducing Consumption, use No. 1, which is
also the No. for Depression of Spirits, Loss of Appetite, and
for all Chronic Complaints arising from over use. General De
bility, and Nervous Prostration. No. 2 for Liver Complaints,
No. 8 for Dyspepsia. Being already prepared for absorption, it
is Taken by Drops and carried immediately iuto the circulation,
so that what you gain you retain. The No. 4is for Female Ir
