' To ALL TRUE REPUBLICANS.
When Federal Minions rear their potent paws —-
Swear proclamations are our supreme laws,
*Tis time for fuck poor dogs as you and /,
<T o crouch at their tremendous feet , and cry ,
spread Sirs, permit poor little pups to yelp,
Without being torn by such an o’ergrown whelp
As Great Democritus, that biped brute,
Whoft sycophancy no one can dispute,
<T : hat he’s a coward too, is half confeft . —
ft Tis said (t true words are often fpokcfn jejl.”
r TT'HERE is not a more remarkable instance of
X the deceitfulnefs of the heart of man to itfelf,
than Democritus has exhibited in the Southern
Sentinel, No. 23; wherein he is convitted out of
jjls own mouth (or rather by his own pen) and in
ienfibly led to pronounce judgment on himfelf.—
fie fays « Rehoboam barked at the Prelident be-
others barked” (the gift of divination clearly
exemplified in Democritus); but suppose we trans •
pole the sentence, and fay—Democritus fawned on
the Prelident because others fawned : To which I
jp»ay add (a truth which all his currijk effrontery
tvill not be able to gainsay) he would willingly
join in any cry, provided be thought the populace
jp his favor.
It would be adding indignity to the many mif
fortunes J have experienced, to enter upon a par
with such a reptile as Democritus; because, I
never was in Billingsgate-—ls be has studied—
and is a proficient in—the annates of that polite
ftU of science, from such aJieing
Good ford deliver me !
Nothing I publilhed could induce him to draw
/uch inferences as he did, but a natural propensity
to scurrility (unless we except sycophancy); which
being substituted in place of argument, necessarily
drives me to the only refcurce which can pojfiUy
be applicable to him: I will therefore conclude
j(though reluctantly) witii the old adage,—-
«He who wrcftles with a t—d is sure to get
be—lh—t.”
REHOBOAM.
P. S. I am inclined to think it would gratify
the public curiosity, to know what fort of a dii
order arffeCted the cranium of Democritus, which
made it necelfary for him to apply to his Doiloralis
Camnus, to prefcribc to his mind; and whether
uncle Toby’s/fly got metamorphofcd into a hornet,
and flung him as it got loose.
