BEDFORD,
CjELEBRATED for getting the fwifteft
/ racers of any hoifc in America, md
who, it U believed, has produced a greater
number of capital colts than any horle in
exidt'nce of his age ; wjti ftar.d the e'nfuirg
season at my plantation, near Edgefield,
court-ho'jfe, and be let to Marcs at the low
fate of Forty Dollars the season ; the
money to be sens with the Mares, or paid
before they are taken away, and One Dol
lar to the Groom. Any gentleman paying
for four Mares, will be allowed to put a
fifth gratis. Such Mares as were put the
last season, and did not prove in foal, will
be put the ensuing season gratis, agreeable
to the fHpalations of the lait year,
BEDFORD was bred by Lord Grovcs
nor, and foaled in the year 1792. He is
a beautiful Bay, sixteen hands high, high
ly formed, and an uncommonly fufe taol
getfer.
He was got by Dungannon ; his dam
Foiry, by Highflier ; his grandara, Fairy
Qactn, by Young Cade; his great gran
dam, Ruth’s Black-eyes, by Crab; his
great, great grandam, Worlock Galloway,
by the Curb lay Barb.
DUNGANNON, by Eclipse ; his dam,
Afpafia, by Herod ; his grandam, Doris,
by Blank ; his great grandam, Helen, by
Spectator ; his great great grandam, Daph
ne, by theGodolphin Arabian—Fox—Chil
ders—M. kclcfs—Tablet Barb.
HIGHFLYER, by Herod; his dam,
Rachel, by Blank ; her dam by Rcgulus—
Sorcheels—-Makelefs—. D’Arcy '$ Royal
Marc.
The great improvement in the breed of
horses is England, for the last fifty years,
has been principally attributed to the supe
rior excellence of a few individuals, whose
blood has given a new character to the rac
ing (lock in that country. Os these the
Godolphin Arabian, Kisg Horod, Eclipse,
Match’em and Highflyer, Hand at the head
of the lift.
It is not thought extravagant, to claim
for Bedford, the fame rank of diftinftion
in the. United States. It is believed no
horfc in thq world ever afforded so many
proofs of superiority as a tbal getter, at so
early an age. The number of his get that
have distinguished thcmfelves, is uncom
monly great for his time of life ; and it is
the more atloni filing, when it is taken into
view that he has generally flood, until thg
last two feafom, in some one or other of the
weftern counties in Virginia, where there
are few bldod marcs.
To provo that his get, in point of per
formance on (he turf, Hand pre-eminently
above any horses that evei appeared in Ame
rica, it will only be ncceffary to detail a
few of their performances. But it must be
remembered that, until these, it does not
appear that any hoife in America ever ran •
a four milts heat wiihin the eight minutes.
The best performances thathareever been
publiihed, areof Brimmer, Rosetta, Betsey
Baker, Shark, Commerce, Virago, Levi
athan, Ac. They have been from Bm. 7s.
to 8. 15s. Some of the performances, of
Bedford’s get, arc as follow :
ARIADNE, at Frederickfburgh, in
October, 1801, with over her
weight, ran a four mil* heat in 7m. 51s.
GALLATIN, ai Richmond, in Odlo
ber, 180*, ran a two mile heat in jm. 435.
—ln February, 1803, at Charleston, for
the fccond day’s Jockey ®lub purse, he ran
a three mile heat in sm. 535.
For the city purse, 2 days after, he ran
the fame distance in sm. 325.
At Frcdeiiclcfburgh, October, 1803, for
the firft day’s Jockey Club purse, CUP
BEARER, 5 years old, ran the firft heat
in 7m. 565. and the second heat in 7m,
50s. —This latter performance was engra.
ven by the Judges on the winning poll;
and the others are too well authenticated
to be doubted. Others of Bedford’s get
have given proofs of eqtial flectnefs j but
to enumerate them all would exceed the
bounds of an advertisement.
The result of the Charleston races, fur
>i(h another striking proof of the luperiority
of Bedfords stock. The first day was taken
by G diatia, a fan of Bedford, by walking
over the course, nothing daring to Hart a.
gainft him. The second day Nancy Air,
by Bedford, won with great eafr, Tho
third day Dungannon, anathftr son of Bed
ford, won alio with vail enfe. The fourth,
day wn won by Gallatin, to whom Dun
gannon was fccond. '
