A Proclamation.
WHEREAS, I hare waived infor
mation, that a number of disorder
ly .persons, ha re for some weeks pad, been
in the habit of travurfiag the streets of Au
gnfta nt utifeafonable hours of the night,
breaking down signs, carrying offlanthorns,
polling up hnrfe-racks, and breaking away
ftepsfrom the doors ofhonfes; and committing
numerous other outrages and trefpalfss inju
rious to private property, and against the
peace and good order of the city—And that
on the night of the £rft inilant, in addition
to mifohievous of this nature, they
proceeded through the streets of this place,
disfiguring lign beards, and painting on the
houses and itores of the inhabitants, abuftve
epiihets and indecent fenresces, and to this
way with wanton icfolence, and unfeeling
vulgarity, insulted females of amiable cha
rter, &of innocent & inoffending manners,
whose firuarion would have commanded re
fpeft from beings in any degree civilized :
In order therefore, that offences of such evil
example and mifehievous tendency, refleft
ing so much difcredic upon the police of this
place, may be fupprelfed, I have deemed it
advifablc, by and with the advice and con
sent of the members of the City Council, to
effer, and I do hereby offer a reward of
FIFTY DOLLARS, to any person who
will make Rich vdifeovery of the offenders,
or give such information refpefting them,
as (hall lead to their conviction in a court of
julticc, and thereby ensure to them the pu
riihment which n:fden:eanors of so dllgracc
ful a nature juflly merit.
And the City Marshall is hereby requi
red to exercise ail pofiioie vigilance in de
tailing and bringing to punifhmcnt and
public expo/urty all persons, who may be
found committing such nightly trefpafTeg a
gaiufl the properties and habitations oi tkc
good citizens of this place.
