Pioneer lenpiptn.
flie “Nowsnnpor Record,” recently publish
ed by Metre. Lay <fc Hrotliors, contains ail im
mense mass of interesting facts in relation to
the origin'and progress of that tremendous cn*
gino for good or ovil—tho Newspaper Prote
in the Old and tho New World From lois
valuable work wo glean a few facts in regard
to tho pioneer papers in this country.
Tho first attempt to establish a Newspaper
in North America, so far as can bo ascertained,
was mado in lloston, iu 1090. A copy of
probably tho only number of this journal is in
tho State paper office in London. It is dated
September 25, 1690—a Bhoefc of four quarto
pages one of which was blank. It was dovo-
tea to a record of passing events—foreign and
domoslio. It was spoken of by the Legislative
authorities as a pamphlit, which ‘‘came out
contrary to law, nnd contained reflections of n
very high naturo.” This piouecr journal was
priuted by Richard Pierce, for licnjamiu Har
ris,
In 1690, Governor Fletohcr, of New York,
caused Wm. Bradford—who oamo to this coun
try with William Penn—to re-priut a London
Onselto containing an account of an eugage-
mont wi h the French.
But the first regular American Newspaper
was undoubtedly tho ‘'Boston Nows Litter,”
which was commenced on tho 21th of April,
1704, by John Campbell, a Sootchman, who
was tbo Postmaster of Boston, and also a book
seller. It was twelve inches by oight, two pa
ges folio, with two columns on each pnge, nnd
printed in small pica typo. The publisher set
forth its claims as follows : “This News Letter
is to lie continuod Weekly ; and all persons
who have any Houses, Lands, Tenements,
Farms, Ships, Vessels, Good Wares, or Mer
chandise, &c., to bo sold or lot, or servunts
Runaway, or Goods Stole or Lots, may have
tho same inserted at a reasonable rate, from
twolvo penoo to five shillings, and not la exceed;
who may agree with John Campbell,' Postinus
tor.” Notwithstanding theso strong induce
ments to advertisers, tho News Letter did not
abound with advertisements, for sometimes it
had ono, but abobt ns oflcn nono At tho end
of fourteen years, tho circulation of the paper
was only threo hundred oopies. When it was
sixteen years old, the publisher gavo notice
that copies would bo printed on a wliolo shoot
of loiter paper, one half of which would bo
blnnk, on which letters might bo written.
In 1819, a uow postmaster had boon appoint
ed, and in December of that year, lie started
the second Anglo-American newspaper—the
“Boston Gazette,”—William Brooker, propri
etor. Tho Nows Letter took umbrage—(some
thing that docs not need mach shaking before
taking)—at the “introductory advertisement”
of tlie Gazette, and this was tho exciting enuso
ol tho first of thoso terrible newspaper wars
that now so frequently convulse editors and
communities in this country.
Tho third American newspaper was tho
“Ainoricnu Mercuric,” which appeared in
Philadelphia, on tho 22 J of December, 1119,

John Dimpcr, his son in-law,
reontimicd its publication until 1744,

1776 It was then discontinued.
The Boston Gazette, with various publishers,
was continued till 1752.
Franklin was an independent mnn—in spirit,
if not in purse—and tho Courier was an inde
pendent, out-spoken paper. The Legislative
Council accordingly took tho Cournnt into con
sideration, ami its publisher was imprisoned fur
four weeks, but as this did not crush iho spirit
of tho journni, tho Council insisted that the
contents should bo supervised by the Secretary
of tho Province. Franklin refused to submit
his “copy," and Iho paper waR issued with tbo
name of Benjamin Franklin ns publisher, who
wob then an npprcnlioo in his brother’s offico.
Tho Courant died iu 1727.
Tho fifth Anglo-American newspaper—tho
“New York Gazette”—appeared October 1G,
1725, printed by Win. Bradford, who, though
nt that time sixty-livo years old, continued to
publish it for seventeen years, when he sold it
to James Parker. Files of it arc to lie soon
in tho library ol tbo New York Historical Soci
oty and it is said to bo iv neat specimen of ty

Retort Courteous —Thackeray, on his first
visit to this country was introduced in Charles

ers of society there. Wishing to try on his
wit, ho addressed her thus :
“1 am happy to meet you Mrs. 0 . I
have heard, Madame, that you were a fast wo

Tho wit met his match, however. To this
bright sally she instantly replied—
“Ah ! Mr. Thackeray, wo must not believe
everything wo hear,—l had heard, sir, that you
were a gontleman!”
Thackeray vamosed. The great English wit
admitted, afterwards, that he had the worst
of it.
