~TU folk***Itooebf tkeecenes in
gei ptooruM Of the execution of tbe
triwtcbed Cheap Ferguson, taken from
the Nashville Banner:
Champ Ferguson has died the death.—
On yesterday, as tbe city belie were cbirn*
ing their usuai noon-day warning, bis
body was placed in its coffin and be was
borne from tbe prison yard. Six goaut
men in steeple crowned bsts and bine;
six grim guardroen with flashing bayonetB
and a motly troop of eager lookers on,
stood around and followed after. There
was a martial precision in the tout eiutem
ble of the tragic spectacle, which carried
tbe mind back into the region of Tyburn,
or the leni* Bat, with Dick Turpin on the
drop, or Le Comte de Triste beneath tbe
axe. Never, perhaps, since the days of
Harps, has a bolder or a bloodier outlaw
paid tbe death penalty, nor did ever a
man lay down bis life with such wondrous
self-possession. It was Micajah Harp,
tbe butcher of an hundred of his fellow
men, whose head was severed from his
body by a dull knife, and who coolly ex
claimed, “you’re a rough butcher, but I’ll
die game.” Champ Ferguson was less
defiant, but not less resolute. A full set
well preserved and vigorous fraaie, en
compassing a worlk of animal life, f.rce
of will and self control, could not be sus
pected of giving way to womanish weak
ness; but few of those who went to see to
him to tbe end, anticipated the splendid
exhibition of courage which attended him
throughout.
******
CHAMP UHO.V THE CALLOWS* STAIR.
They paused a moment at the gallows’
stair. Champ' looked around sternly, but
unmoved. He gazed up at the broad
heavens; measured the scaffold mentally;
sneered at tbe coffin, the swinging rope
and the trap, and boldly ascended. Tffi;
face was a trifle paler, perhaps, and the
eyas somewhat dazzled by tbe garish liggt
of the sun. But there was nervousness—
“Nor sign of falter
Beneasn tbe baiter.”
He stood firm upon the drop, like an
old salt upon his quarter deck, lie cast
about him unconcernedly, and bowed re
peatedly to persons in the crowd. Ue
caught sight of a familirr face on the ram
parts, and nodded his head. His counte
nance was serious, but. passive and pas
sionless, and only tbe cord about his arms
indicated hirn as the criminal.
THE CHARGES.
Col. Shafter read aloud the changes,
specifications and finding of the court.—
Ferguson listened intensely, his head ask
ance and his fiqed musingly on his boots.
The list was long and bloody, embracing
twenty-three separate cases. How the
prisoner about to be executed had cut the
throats of three prisoners of war; how he
had murdered an old father whilst the
arms of bis daughter were flung nbout
his neck; how he had pursued a victim
and killed him, saying “that's ninety-sev
en of the d—d Yankees gone, and I’ll go
to the hospital and kill three more to make
an even hundred;” bow he had mangled
wounded men with ku<vrs and sharpened
sticks; how he bad murdered citizens, as
well as soldiers, running through four
years of desperate cruelty and wrong,
clearly by Col. Shafter, embracing over
one hundred human beings. Champ nod
ded approval of ten of the charges.
To one he said, “I could tell it better
than that.”
“Yes,” replied Col. S., "Fve no doubt
yon could, for you saw it.”
“Well, Champ, you hear what these
say, and I’m about to carry them out and
execute you. I hope you bear no malice
for the discharge of my duty?”
Champ replied, “not in the loast—none
in the world.”
The Colonel then said: “ Do you waut
to say anything?”
“No,” replied the prisoner. “That is, I
can’t Bay what I want to say here, and
may be it’s no matter any way.”
“Have you no last request to make.’’
“Well, I don’t want to be cut up by
anybody. When you’re done with me 1
want you to put my body in that thing,”
nodding at his coffin, “and give it to my
wife. She’ll take me home, to White
county. There I wish to bo bnried—not
in each soil as this here. There’s a little
graveyard near my house—she knows it
—and I want to lie there. If I had my
own way I’d be there now, and not here.
I wish you would wipe my face before I

High Climbing.—An up country paper
is disposed to award the premium for the
“biggest Fourth of July Injun” to one
Edward H. Tenny, an attorney of Nash
ville, of whose oration a specimen para
graph is subjoined, aud which we are as
sured upon solemn authority is a reliable
extract from the printed copy of this
“ magnorious production:”
“Venerable,” says the orator, "as the
revolving epoch is our anniversaries of
freedom iu this avalanche of time. Ven
erable as the abacus on the citadel of
g reatness, thou well-spring of hope.—
omestead of liberty, we venerate thy
habitation. Monument of immortality, we
adorate thy worth. Pharos of ages, we
hail tbe glimmering mid the cataracts of
life. Almanac of our country, we would
litter thy welcome with aerenest awe.”
We intended to give another touch, but
were carried away by our feelings, and
had not succeeded in getting back np to
the time of going to press!

A Negro Kissing His Hand to a Ladt.—
A negro who bad been in this place for
some time, serving as a waiter, had tbe
impertinence to kies bis hand to a respec
table lady of oar town a few dayB ago.—
Being called to an account for this breach
of negro etiquette towards a white lady,
he replied that he coaid see no improprie
ty in so doing, whereupon a friend of tbe
lady embraced the first favorable oppor
tunity of returuing tbe salute by tbe ap
plication of a good sized cudgel over the
darkey’s pate. The gentleman committing
the assault.was brought before Justice
Harwood, who dismissed tbe case with
the verdict—served him right.
[EllicotCa Mills Recorder.
Singular.—A writer in Harper’s Month
ly, describing the effects of the shells
which were thrown into the city of Char
leston, S. C., records tbe following: “An
other shell tore open a Bible upon the pul
pit desk of a church, leaving a leaf upoD
which were conspicuous the words, ‘An
enemy hath done this.’ The Church re
ferred to was the Methodist Protestant
Church. The sentence, ‘an enemy bath
done this,’ was found on a fragment of
the Bible lying near the door, and was
the first picked up by the first person en
tering the church after the explosion of
the shell.”
As some of our readers may sometimes
be afflicted with neuralgia, we give the
following excellent receipt;— Half drachm
of sal ammonia, in an ouuce of camphor
water, to be taken a spoonful at a dose,
and the dose repeated several times, at
intervals of five minutes, if tbe patient be
not releived at once.
