His wisdom, created a remedy for exhausted na
ture in all its phases—whether the exhausted
condition of the human system, mined by vkNa
tion of the laws of health, or exhausted soil, im
poverished by ruinous systems of culture. So,
also, as cutaneous and fungus . arcs arc removed
from the human body, by the application of the
knife, so are similar diseases -of the soil to be
removed by the application of the plow. Inven
tive genius has produced the knife in various
forms and shapes for a proper application to dif
ferently formed incubuses to be removed from
tho human body. Tlie same genius has shaped
scientific plows and cultivators to be applied to
all sorts of soil in tho removal of obstructions to
the successful growth of the grain and vegetable
productions which sustain human life. Hence,
we have plows which break up the hard incrus
tations of the soil which qto as detrimental to
its proper cultivation and growing power as a
dry, cutaneous sore upon the human body is
to impodo its proper development and growth.
There are two principles of success in agricul
ture which should be kept steadily in view by
the intelligent farmer, viz: •
1. Deep and close plowl/ip. thoroujh'j turnhbj up
the soil to the clnj.
2. The proper mixing <vd application of th•- •'.■m-
mcrcial fertilizers.
In regard to tho first, it is a principle practiced
by our most successful planters, who have long
discarded the ignorant idea that deep plowing,
turning tho clay to tho sun, impoverishes tho
productiveness of tho soil. To illustrate the
falsity of this idea, we will relate a point given
to us a few days ago. A gentleman determined
to turn out a certain portion of a field, for some
reason wc do not remember, dug a ditch twelve
feet wido and three feet deep across his field.—
Ho subsequently detorjuineiTuot to turn out tho
field and so filled up the ditch, planting corn
and plowing through it as other parts of the
field. The result of it was that he gathered
four timo9 tho amount of com from the ground
in which the ditch was dug than ho did from tlie
same amount of land adjoining the ditch.
In regard to tho second principle, that of em
ploying fertilizers, it is only necessary to call
would feel it a desecration to do so after having
slandered her people as he has done nt Wnshing-

Death of Hon. A. B. Fannin.—It is with much
regret that we learn from tho Montgomery pa
pers of the death of this worthy and estimable
; gentleman in that city, on the 9th instant, from
apoplexy. Ho arrrived ut Montgomery on the
preceding day in his usual good health, mid was
i sojourning at the residence of Mr. Fort Ilargrovc.
: A year or two prior to tho war, he had removed
| from Trcmp county to Tuskegec; and our citi
zens well remember the regrets felt at his loav-
Kx-Govkp.nor Charles J. Jenkins. -Wc are
glad to learn that this noble old Georgian has
returned to his home in Augusta. When tho
hearts of stout men almost quailed before the
military power sent to Georgia to domineer over
and oppress our people, ( harles J. Jenkins, true
to his instincts as an honest man, fearlessly and
stoically stood by his Stato nnd his people against
wrong. Hu had tho moral courage and firmness
to defy oppressive wrong, and tlie manhood to
bo true to his trust as tho Chief Executive of
Georgia. For this unselfish devotion to the
rights of Georgia and of G orgiuns, wc honor
him as rt tho noblest Roman of them all.” And tho
glad are we that he is again at homo among us
to raise his voice, and like«a true statesman, ns
he is, in words of warning* and counsel to the
people who so much love him.

There is a philosophic idea in regard to deep City, where he tried, as he says, to prevent, or
plowing we wish to impress upon the mind of circumvent Bullock’s design upon Georgia
the young farmer, and will bo readily understood having tho State remanded back tn slave inili-
by him when we state it. A well-cultivated field
should be like u sponge. It should absorb all
tho wator which falls upon it instead of running
off and creating gullies, as produced by shallow
plowing, which only loosen tho top dirt, making
it the more easily to bo washed oft’ by rains.—
By deep plowing to tho clay the hard nnernsta-
tions of the soil arc broken up, and tho earth is
thus made nbsovbent, retaining all tho water
foiling upon it This keeps the soil moist and,
as the power of the sun evaporates the water
from the 'soil, it is easily to be observed that the
deeper the water penetrates towards the clay,
the longer it will require it to evoporato, and
hence the longer the plant will receivo the bene-
fita of the moisture.
