AM PLEASED to Inform my old customer*, and ihe | but oil tlio contrary Wo cher'isll the kind feelings
public g.’iicrally that I havo just received nml opetifd j engendered by early associations and old memo
ries. Let us bo scmmllously j ust in our dealings
with him; let us assist him in his aspirations for
knowledge and aid him ill its acquisition. Try
to ulcvate him in the scale ot true manhood, of
civilization and of Christianity, so that he may
be better fitted lor the grave duties and high re
sponsibilities forced upon him by his new posi
tion. In a word, convince him that we arb his
best, if not his only friends, and when we shall
have douo this, we shall uot only have placed
our labor on a sound footing, but wo shall have
gained in the laborer a strong and zealous ally.
On this subject I speak not from theory but ex
perience, an oxperieucu which has taught me
that tho kindest relations can exist between tho
planter and his former slaves, resulting iu mu
tual advantage to both parties. My old slaves
are cultivfttlng the land on which they have lived
for years, and there has boon a constant and
marked improvement in their industry in each
year since their emancipation, though thov have
} not yet attained the same efficiency as laborers
they formerly possessed. I havo promised to
put up for them a school house and church, rind
to pay a portion of the salaries of their tertchcrs.
Such a system, if generally adopted, would tend
greatly to fix the laborers to the soil, and would,
by adding to their content and enjmqnent, result
in vast ultimate benefit to the’ landlord. That
kind treatment, jusi deal hag’ fihid siucoro efforts
to improve their cCudilion aro uot without effect
upon them, is pTOYed by the fact, gratifying to
myself, tlmt I a nr now on my way to Mississippi,
by the request of hundreds ol negroes besides
my crwtf laborers, to advise them what course lo

tho seeds of knowledge will be sown on a bar
