Mr. ■—, offered a resolution that

Wasitinoton, February 8, 1870.—To-day, just
as the Cabinet was going into sessional the White
House, one of ti.elTasiduut’s Private Secretaries
lmnd. '.l tn General Grant an article in the press
dispatches relating the interview of the Georgia
Judges with the President, in which it is made
to appear that lie (the President) deems all the
legislation of tho Georgia Legislature prior to
the expulsion of colored members as unlawful,
and that in his opinion the present Legislature
is tho only legal legislative body convened iu the
State since 1861, und that the election of the
Senators made some time ago is illegal, and
therefore another election of United Status Sen
ators is right and proper, etc.
The Presu.ent, after reading the article, said:
•‘W.-ll. I d "'1:111.• 1 eanu'it sou how such an in
ference could be drawn from my remarks to those
gentlemen. I cannot, however, commence
reetiug newspaper paragraphs in relation to my
self. I have no doubt the Senate will settle the
question in relation to the Georgia Senators;
I do not propose to do so; it is their business.”

during which the President expressed his desire

alluding to the paragraph noticed above, remark-
“ I endorse tho remarks about Terry,
but of the legality of the acts ol the Georgia
Legislature prior to their unconstitutional ac

Governor Bullock furnished the statement
that went to the press last night setting forth that
General Grant expressed the opinion that tho
election of Senators in Georgia and other acts of
the Legislature of that State prior to the expul
sion ot negro members was illegal.

RELIEF RESOLUTION.
Tho following message was received from the
Senate through their Secretary Mr. Mills:
Mr. Speaker: The Senate has adopted the fol
lowing resolution, in which they ask the concur
rence of the House.
Resolved, By flie General Assembly, that all
proceedings in the several courts of this State,
founded on any debt, or coutmct, made or en
tered into prior to June 1, 1865, and all levies
and sales by virtue of any execution shall bo,
and are hereby stayed until twenty days after
tho recess taken by this General Assembly shall
have expired.
Resolved, That tho General Assembly m com
pliance with tho jusi demands of the people,
earnestly appeal to Maj. Gen. Terry to sanction
and enforce the above resolution after its appro
val by the Provisional Governor.
The Speaker appointed the following Auditing
Committee: Turnlin, of Randolph, Chairman
Neal, of Warren, Ford, Johnson, of Towns,
Rainey, Zellars, Hamilton, Porter, colored,
Watkins, Maxwell.
Hon. James Brooks.—No one possessed of
any knowledge of intellectual get-up among
leading men can look upon Mr. Brooks and not
recognize his claim to distinction. His sallow,
strongly marked face has a line, clear-cut look,
tha» is enhanced by a pair of glasses that hit
like a battery on his prominent nose. It is in
the lower part of the face that one gets the best
idea ot his character. The chin ro .lids out,
forming an admirable base to his firm-set mouth,
and one can read there the qualities that carried
him unflinchingly through tho stormy debates
that were set to the music of artillery, shaking
the walls of the Capitol.
Mr. Brooks is ready iu debate, but carries
with him rather the force of character than the
weight of argument. He can not be intimidat
ed nor embarrassed. At any hour, while the
Cave is bciug agitated by political dicussion, he
may be seen rising, iu a* sort ot dark majesty,
from his seat to utter tho most atrocious doc
trines of the Democratic faith, and although
vds do not gather about him, as around Cox
or Voorheess, Big ham, or Butler, the leaders of
our party note every word ho utters, aud hasten
reply.
It is curious to seo the gentle, fatherly tender
ness with which he regards tlie beautiful young
form at his side, and realize that the bitter lead
er of the bitterest factiou onr country ever ex
perienced has an inner, sweet domestie life ap
parent here.—Don Piaft.
