business visit Monday.
Uiss Callie McKemie went up to

Mrs. W. E. Palmer returned from a
visit to Opelika, Saturday.
Morris Hagedorn and Louis Merz
Visited Montgomery Sunday.
Miss Lizzie Scott is home again,
after a protracted visit to Atlanta.
Kev. and Mrs. S. P. Callaway spent
Saturday with West Point friends.
The Jean Ingelow Circle meets at
Mrs. W. L. Williams’s Friday night.
The first of October will briog about

The recent change in the schedule
suits business men well. Northern
and Eastern mail comes through sev
eral hours sooner and the Constitution

Saturday was quite a busy day for
our merchants. Cotton came in at a
lively rate. Between 300 and 350 bales
were marketed here that day.
Mr. E. C. Earker is having some im
provements made on the cottage recently
purchased by him on College street, oppo
site Mr. J. S. Baker’s residence.

The Dixie Club held quite a pleasant
meetiug at Mrs. L. M. Bookhardt’s
last Friday night. Officers for the
ensuing two months were elected, as
follows: R. W. McKemie, President;
Miss Minnie Longshore, Vice presi
dent; George T. Smith, Secretary;
Arthur M. Baker, Assistant Secretary.
T he new President announced com
mittee on program to act with the
Presi dent in arranging exercises for
each meeting; also, commit ten to act
with Vice-president in selecting time
and place of meeting. An
interesting program has been ar
ranged for the next meeting, which
will be held at Mrs. William Brown's
the fitst Friday night in October.
Monday afternoon, while roiling
brick to tbe masons on the fourth
story of the Lanett Mills, Johu Clay
happened to quite a serious accident.
His wheelbarrow ran off the plank on
which he was tolling it, and, in
attempting to hold it, he lost his
balance and fell to the ground. The
fall was a fearful one, and all who
witnessed it felt sure it would prove
instantly fatal. Dr. Horsley was
summoned at once and responded
promptly. After a careful examina
tion lie discovered that the injuries
were not necessarily fatal: two scalp
wc.uuds, a badly lacerated lower lip,
1 eft forearm fractured, and two ribs
broken. Tbe young man is doing
well end is in a fair way to recover.
He is about 20 years of age and is, tbe
sou of C. M, Clay, formerly of Colum
bus.
