His many West Point friends regret
exceedingly that J. H. Williams, for
merly a citizen of this place, is strug
gling with that dreadful disease, yel
low fever, at his home in Jesup, Ga.
A week or two ago Mr. Williams as
sisted in shrouding a victim of the yel
low fever, not knowingat the time that
the deceased bad come to bis death

Mr. W. S. Stephens, of Franklin,
Bobinson county, Texas, has beeu
among his West, Point friends this
week. He was the guest of his mother,
Mrs. Stephens, aDd his sister, Mrs. W.
G. Sbaefer. It has been a number of
years since Will has visited his old
home, and bis friends were delighted to
see him. He is a prominent official of
the International and Great Northern
K. B., and was one of a delegation of
three from the Lone Star State to the
Trackmen’s National Convention
which was held in Atlanta last week.
He stopped over here, en route home,
and, after spending several days most
pleasantly, left for Franklin, Texas,

. Presiding Elder, Dr. W. F. Cook,
preached at the Methodist church
last Sunday morning and evening.
Both discourses were earnest, strong,
scriptural. The one at night, given
by special request, was especially
adapted to parents and is calculated
to do much goed. The Presiding El
der held the 4th Quarterly Conference
for this charge Monday night. At this
conference, officers for the ensuing
conference year were elected as fol
lows : Stewards, H. W. Miller, J. P
Miller, H. W. Hodge, P. A. Tatum, T.
L. Scott, W. H. White, W. B. Higgin-
bothem, and B. H. Hill. Of these, J.
P. Miller was chosen district steward,
and B. H. Hill recording steward. J.

LaGrange has good United States
money enough to handle all the cot
ton marketed here. Let the fleecy
staple roll in. We are not short on
the funds.
Would it not be \ good idea for the
friends of silver to call a public meet
ing at the court house, to uphold the
h ands of those of our representatives
i n Congress who are standing by the
people in this fight? The citizens of
Troup should stand in solid rank
back of the men who are carrying
our banner iDto the thickest of the
melee.
There is a “sneaking” conviction in
the popular mind that, whenever the
financial muddle settles upon the
lees, cotton is going to advance in
price. The estimate of the crop, as
the returns come in, is falling lower
still, and the law of supply and de
mand comes in to boost the stapld.
Eight cents is a moderate figure,
nine is better, ten is best. Ten cents
cotton would “make Rome howl”
with joy. We would sing, then,
“Hard times come again no more.”
